Reflection

Context: This lesson plan was written for an assignment in my ED 290

Sheltered Instruction Class that was conducted through Portland
Community College in the fall of 2015. Sheltered Instruction is a means for
making content comprehensible for English learners while they are
developing English proficiency. The SIOP (Sheltered Instruction Observation
Protocaol) is a validated model of sheltered instruction. Sheltered
classrooms, which may include a mix of native English speakers and English
learners or only English learners, integrate language and content while
infusing sociocultural awareness.
Content: Sheltered Instruction introduces a research-based model of
sheltered instruction, and provides guidance for the best practices for
English learners, grounded in more than two decades of classroom-based
research, the experiences of competent teachers, and findings from the
professional literature. I have presented in my lesson plans, on Halloween, a
way to implement the information I learned from this class in a classroom
setting.
Contemplation: If I had to change my lesson plans I would make them
more general such as the desert animals found in the Appalachian
Mountains rather than Halloween celebrations, because Halloween
celebrations are seasonal and not every celebrates that holiday. They may
celebrate day of the dead instead.
