Nanotechnology in Civil Engineering
ABSTRACT Nanotechnology is an enabling technology that allows us to develop materials with improved or totally new properties. It is one of the most active research areas that encompass a number of disciplines including civil engineering and construction
materials. The paper is a summary of the application of nanotechnology in
construction. At first presents the terms and basics of nanotechnology in general. Then, the need and its implication in the civil engineering discipline. It is essentially about new ways of making things through understanding and control over the fundamental building blocks i.e. atoms, molecules and nanostructures of all physical things. The current activities and awareness of nanotechnology in the development of better construction materials leading to enhanced secure structures. This is followed by results of a study of nanotechnology development and activities focusing on key areas relevant to construction and the build environment. Examples of nanotechnology enabled materials and products that are either in the market or ready to be adopted in the construction industry are provided. Finally, the future implications and potential of nanotechnology development in construction are discussed.
