pH Scale Assignment

Objective: To create a large pH scale that explains how pH is related to concentration of

H+ and OH
Introduction:
You have already learned that the pH scale tells you how strongly a substance is an acid
or a base. You also know that an acid is a substance that has a high concentration of H+
and a low concentration of OH. For this assignment you will create a large pH scale that
shows more H+ at the low end of the scale and more OH at the high end of the scale. Be
sure to follow the directions carefully.
Directions:
1. Get a metric ruler and 3 pieces of computer paper.
2. Tape the 3 pieces of paper together (the long way) to make a very long piece of
paper.
3. Make a neat straight line across the paper.
4. Mark off the numbers from 0-14 every 5 cm on the paper (Start 5 cm from the
edge).

Cut out all of the H+ and OH.

Glue (or draw) lots of H+ near the 0 end and lots of OH near the 14 end.
Glue (or draw) an equal number of H+ and OH above number 7.
Use the rest of your pieces (or draw them) to show how the change is gradual
from one side to the other.

9. Open your book to page 230. You need to finish your pH scale by drawing the
pictures, labeling everything, and coloring the scale with colored pencils just like
they appear in the book. Also, add the following words to your pH scale and show
where they belong on the pH scale: (stomach acid, baking soda, hydrochloric
acid).
