Goals
To develop the basic reading and writing skills required of informed citizens prepared for
employment in a changing workplace
To develop a foundation of communication skills necessary for life-long learning
To use language appropriate to the situation, audience, and purpose
To explore literary works as a way of knowing, developing personal values, understanding our
literary and multicultural heritage, and broadening experience
To express ourselves powerfully, convincingly and gracefully for a variety of personal, social, and
academic purposes
Various selections of technical writing (business letter, resume, meeting minutes, proposals, etc.)
Essay
Novels: Maus I and Maus II
Drama: Twelve Angry Men and/or The Crucible
Media: Various selections including film
Evaluation
Your mark in this course is based on in-class writing assignments, individual projects, cooperative group
work, response journals, tests and quizzes,

Work Habits
Establishing excellent work habits and a positive attitude are two main goals in this course. Come to
class prepared to learn from others.
** Use your device for academic purposes during class time. If you distract others, you
will be asked to work elsewhere and marked absent from class**
Additional notes:
Regular attendance is extremely important. If you are absent, please have a parent call the office at
604-981-1300. It is your responsibility to make up missed work. Check with a classmate to find out
what you missed or email your teacher.
Late assignments should be delivered to my mailbox in the main office as soon as you return to school.
Clean up after your snacks before leaving the class.
Respect your learning environment (doodle on paper but not on books, desks, chairs, walls or friends)
