Blood Glucose Monitoring (BGM)

Step by Step Guide


STEPS
1. Check Dr. orders

RATIONALE
Prevents wrong intervention on
patient
Reduces transmission of
organisms
Allows for smooth procedure

2. Wash hands
3. Assemble supplies at the
bedside
4. ID patient and explain
procedure
5. Remove test strip from
container and place in
glucometer

Creates partnership with patient

6. Apply gloves
7. Select appropriate finger
site clean finger with
alcohol swab for 15
seconds and let it dry for
30 seconds
8. Perform puncture on clean
finger
9. Holding the finger
downward, carefully
squeeze the finger (milk
the finger) to produce a
large drop of blood
10.
Places the test strip
onto the drop of blood and
draws up the blood into
the end of the test strip.
BGM Checklist

The test strip will turn the


machine on. Ensure the test
strip identifying number
matches the glucometer
machine
Prevents accidental exposure to
blood or body fluids
Reduces the transmission of
organisms

Collects necessary blood for the


test
Promotes an adequate amount
of blood to be drawn up for an
accurate result

The test strip must have


enough blood drawn up the
test strip to produce an
accurate result

Do not place the drop of


blood on the test strip.

Apply pressure with
sterile 2 X 2 to the
puncture site

Read the glucometer
for results
13.
Turn off glucometer,
remove test strip and
discard used gauze
14.
Remove gloves, wash
hands and record results
on diabetic record sheet.
