Narrative Structure
Todorov
Equilibrium Amy sits on the wall in an alleyway smoking a cigarette, when shes done she
leaves and begins the short walk to her house. As she enters she hears her parents arguing,
she leaves and slams the door behind her.
Disruption to Equilibrium As Amy is listening to music, walking down the street she is
interrupted by an unidentified male. He asks for Amys number, she rejects him she then
shoves her aside then storms off. The following day at school she is confronted by two girl,
one of which was claims that Amy was harassing her boyfriend (the unidentified male).
Recognition of Disruption Amy goes home and breaks down in her bathroom and uses a
razor to self-harm.
Attempt to Repair Afterwards Amy writes a letter to leave for her parents, placing it on the
counter and leaves home for the last time.
New Equilibrium- Amy stands on a bridge and reflects on what she has left behind as she
looks down. She then picks up her bags and then walks away.

Propp
Hero Amy could be considered the hero as she goes on an emotional journey and is the
protagonist of the film
Villain Olivia (the girl who confronts Amy) could be considered the villain as her encounter
is what appears to trigger her to self-harm.

Barthes
Hermeneutic/Enigma Code Mystery is created through the film with the use of the
voiceover, the voiceover is Amy addressing an individual this creates mystery as to who Amy
is taking to and why she is sharing her emotional issues with them.
Proairetic Code After Amy has left home and is standing on a bridge suspense is created
as the audience is led to believe that she is about to jump.
