Stories in the Dark
C
elebrate Halloween on a spooktacular storytelling walk along the darkened, woodland trails of the Great Swamp Outdoor Education Center in
Chatham Township! Enjoy a memorable night of silly, slightly spooky, nature-themed and Native American storytelling, on Saturday, October
29 beginning at 5:30 p.m. You never know who may be lurking around the next bend in the path waiting to tell their story - it could be an eagle,
a pirate, or a giant luna moth! Wear a costume if you like. Enjoy a cookie & cider provided by Whole Foods Market of Madison.
Small groups leave the Visitors Center every 15 minutes with a costumed guide, listening for the wild nocturnal sounds of nature, and pausing to
be entertained by interactive storytellers along the way. Between stories, discover hand-carved jack-o-lantern posed in the forest to light the trails and
add to the otherworldly atmosphere. There are NEW stories every year, so its always a different and exciting experience whether youre a first timer
or an annual Trail Tales visitor.
Perfect for families, individuals, scout troops, and youth groups. This program is recommended for ages 6 and up, as well as fun-loving adults.
The entire walk lasts approximately 1 hour, and costs $6 per participant. Sign up for a time slot between 5:30 p.m. and 7:45 p.m. Call soon to register
for a time slot as space is limited!
NEW this year is Teeny Tiny Trail Tales for families with small children ages 2 to 5! On Saturday, October 29, from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m., families
explore the trails during daylight with a guide. Children hunt for hidden surprises along the way and listen to storytellers in the woods. Teeny Tiny
Trail Tales costs $3 per person. Sign up for a time slot between 1 p.m. and 2 p.m. before they fill up!

ark your calendars for Saturday, October 1, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. to spend a funfilled afternoon learning about the native people of New Jersey at the Great Swamp
Outdoor Education Center in Chatham Township.
For thousands of years, before the European settlers arrived in New Jersey, the Lenape
Indians lived in these forests, hunting for deer and bear, living in handmade wigwams, fashioning
dugout canoes from tulip poplar trees, and carving their tools out of rock and bone. They lived
close to the land, existing in balance with nature. However, the Lenape are not a thing of the past,
but a part of New Jerseys heritage that is alive and well today. And now you can take part in a
Lenape Celebration!
Bring the entire family to meet members of the Ramapough Lenape tribe as they present a
traditional drum circle, dancers in regalia, and demonstrate real tools and artifacts. Gather around
a wigwam replica in the forest and listen to the
history of the Lenape. Enjoy many hands-on
activities, such as molding a clay pot by the
fire, making fire without matches, and playing
the games that Lenape children played to hone
their skills.
Take a guided walk on the wooded trails
to discover how the Lenape used local plants
to meet their needs or explore the interior of
the wigwam, set up as it would have been
hundreds of years ago.
Whole Foods Market of Madison will
be selling lunch and snack items.
Admission is $5 per person age 3 and
up. Rain or shine.
Wedding of theCentury
On Sunday, October 16
the Frelinghuysen Arboretum, Morris Township
RSVP by October 3 at 973.285.6550
Journey through the decades of the 1800s to discover the various
fashions of past American women.
Married in white, you chose right. Did all brides marry in white? Step back in time to enjoy 100 years
of wedding fashions and customs of the 19th century in a glamorous historical setting. Learn how weddings
evolved throughout the Victorian period to the familiar customs we enjoy today. Enjoy an interactive
tour featuring ten decades of historically accurate bridal fashions offering a glimpse into how weddings
transformed from a run-of-the-mill fact of life, to an enormous, expensive celebration.
This fashion event takes place in the historic Mansion, where models wearing clothing from the
19th century discuss wedding traditions and share stories from Vail family history.
Tours begin at 1 p.m., 2 p.m., 3 p.m., and 4 p.m. Space is limited in the Mansion, so preregistration is
required. The cost is $7 per adult, $6 per senior (65+), and $5 per child. Children under age 4 are FREE.
his holiday, take a step back in time to a simpler place and discover the customs and
festivities of a 1900s Thanksgiving celebration at Fosterfields Living Historical Farm
in Morris Township. On Sunday November 13, from 12 noon to 4 p.m., youll have a
memorable and fun experience celebrating a farm-style Thanksgiving holiday, at ThanksgivingHarvest Home. Visit the many farm animals, enjoy hands-on dinner prep at the farmers house,
take a wagon ride, speak with historical reenactors, tour the Willows, and so much more!
Remember to gather at 1 p.m. for a special Armistice program to commemorate U.S. veterans.
While most of the harvest has been gathered, there is still much to do and see on a working
farm. Help the farmers shock corn in the field, shell dried corn for the animals, and assist with an
antique gasoline engine demo. Saw the wood, which is needed for winter heating and cooking,
and rake falling leaves at the cottage. Pitch in at the cider press, and watch the apple juice flow!
The farm animals love visitors, so visit all of them! Meet the cows, horses, pigs, sheep, chickens, ducks, and turkeys,
and watch a cow being milked. During Talk Turkey, learn about the handsome tom turkey and the hen turkey.
In recognition of local clubs that held annual Thanksgiving hunts during the time period, watch a sidesaddle riding
demonstration and meet the lady wearing lovely period attire on her mount. Hop aboard the open-air wagon for a picturesque
ride around the farm.
What is Thanksgiving without a fine dinner with all the trimmings? At the Farmhouse, roll up your sleeves to assist with
holiday preparations. You can see the wood-burning cook stove in action as the cooks perform their magic in the kitchen!
Since November 11, 1919, Armistice Day, later named Veterans Day, has honored the men and women who have served
in the U.S. armed forces. At 1 p.m., gather for a special program to honor our veterans. This year the focus is women, who
most often served as non-combatants, and played important roles during the Revolutionary War, Civil War, and WWI. There
will be women in period attire focusing on their important contributions. After the program, tour the first floor of the Foster
family home, The Willows, and speak informally with the women reenactors. You may want to compare the farmers home to
the Fosters family home!
Dont miss stopping by the Visitors Center for the Food for Thought exhibit, and
creating your own craft! A must-see is the hands-on Transportation Exhibit where
Miss Fosters 1922 Model T Ford and 1929 Hupmobile are on display, along
with a carriage and truck visitors may ride.
Admission for Thanksgiving Harvest Home is $8 per adults, $7 per
senior (65+), $6 per child age 4 - 16, and $4 per child age 2 & 3. FREE
per child under age 2, and Friends members half price with a current
membership card. Current military personnel and veterans are
admitted FREE for this event.
Gross-Out Adventure!
Kids, you are invited to celebrate some of the most disgusting aspects of history! If
you are between ages 7 and 11, have a blast with science experiments, creative writing
activities, crafts, and much more!
Want to be really grossed out? The new exhibit, Coffins, Commodes, and
Consumption, highlights some of the grossest things about the 19th century. Have you
ever wondered what gross food people ate in the days before refrigerators? Did pollution
exist before the 20th century? How did people keep themselves clean and treat diseases?
At this all-day, mini-camp, on Friday, November 11, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Historic
Speedwell in Morristown, you can explore these topics with different crafts and activities.
The cost is $45 per person. Space is limited, so register early.
fter the holidays have passed and the gifts have been opened, kids often get
bored being cooped up at home. December is a fantastic time to learn some
of the natural worlds best kept secrets. Theres no better opportunity to see
animal tracks in the snow, search for hidden wildlife homes, or solve the mystery
of where all the summer creatures have gone. Kids ages 5 to 8 are invited to attend
the Wild About Winter Mini-Camp on Wednesday, December 28 through Friday,
December 30 at the Great Swamp Outdoor Education Center in Chatham Township.
Each day kids enjoy crafts, stories, games, activities, and outdoor adventures
centered around a different winter theme. Expert naturalists help campers view the
winter world in an entirely new light.
Camp is scheduled, from 9:30 a.m. to 12 noon, and the fee is $16 per child per
day. Sign up for one or more days. Campers should bring a nut-free snack and dress
for the weather as some activities take place outside daily. Space is limited to 18
children each day.
our new shaded benches have been installed at the patio area of the Jets
Play 60 All Access Playground at Central Park of Morris County. Coming
soon are two shade umbrellas to cover portions of the playground. Funding
for the shade umbrellas was generously provided by Atlantic Health Morristown
Medical Center. These 15x15 foot umbrellas will be installed outside the fence
and overhang the area near the spring rockers and the music stand. In addition,
several new shade trees will be planted next to the cherry trees. Shading the area
is a challenge due to equipment height, safety considerations, the safety surfacing,
and the angle of the sun.
The Park Alliance holds an annual golf outing at Berkshire Valley Golf
Course with net proceeds benefiting park projects. Previously, the All Access
Playground was the beneficiary for several years. This year, the winning team
included Nick Mondello, Jim Atkins, Ray Katch, and Hugh Granada. More than
$8000 was raised for this years benefit projects a picnic shelter next to the All
Access Playground, to replace the seasonal picnic tent, and for new exhibits at the
Great Swamp Outdoor Education Center.
Donations for programs and projects are gladly accepted. Please contact
Denise Lanza, Executive Director of the Morris Park Alliance, at dlanza@
