ABB University Switzerland (UCH) is the umbrella

organisation that unifies all training activities run by
14 ABB Learning Centers in Switzerland. UCH has a
decentralised organisational structure which aims to
deliver target-group-oriented training for customers
and ABB employees as close as possible to the business processes, at the same time as presenting a
single identity to the outside world, i.e. it is a
Virtual Organisation.

from focusing and concentrating on its own core
competences. In the case of UCH, this takes the
form of education and training, a service which
many ABB companies can count among their
strengths.

Training Team (all Learning Center managers) and

Project Groups. The UCH Training Team concentrates on the exchange of training process know-how
and the utilisation of synergies for creating common
aids and standards. Project Groups take on activities
which would exceed the capacity of a single Learning Center (e.g. eLearning development, the handling of comprehensive training projects where more
than one Learning Center is involved).

The virtual organisation of ABB University

Switzerland has the following structure:
A permanent management team, the UCH Core
Team (comprising the UCH Coordinator and some
of the Learning Center managers) and the UCH
Secretariat (contact point from outside) form the
first circle.

The third circle consists of specialists and partners who are deployed as needed. By means of cooperation contracts, service contracts, or other agreements, specialists, guest lecturers, private training
institutes, consultants, ABB-internal staff from
development, product management, engineering,
etc. are engaged on a task-specific basis. Most of
them do this directly with one of the training centres. The proximity to the business processes of our
internal and external cooperation partners which is
achieved in this way is the prerequisite for comprehensive training aligned to the target group or problem, as laid down in the UCH training concept.

The second circle comprises all Learning Centers

with their managers and permanently employed training staff. Each LC operates as an independent team
in its own training field, and is responsible for the
customer satisfaction and profitability of the training
it performs. The LCs regard themselves as entrepreneurs, and structure their work as they wish. The
only factors restricting their autonomy are a jointly
drawn-up business plan, a common training concept, commitment to absolute customer satisfaction,
and absorption of the joint fixed costs.
Also included in this second circle are the UCH

OBJECTIVES

Leadership competence is the ability to lead other

people, to motivate, develop and assess them, as
well as to define processes. The capacity for self
management from the personality competence
area, as well as social competence, are both closely related to leadership competence.

The UCH training concept ensures that the following requirements are met:
In all cases, training is focused on a target group.
It must be structured for the group in question,
use the right didactic methods, and take the
trainees' previous knowledge and experience
into account.

Social competence is the ability to deal with people. Essentially this means the ability and willingness to become involved with other people
as openly and free from prejudice as possible,
and to interact with them with awareness and
responsibility. This includes, for example, the
ability and willingness to make an appropriate
and constructive personal contribution to the
activities of a group.

Training is problem-oriented. The problem has

to be defined and explained first, then it must be
demonstrated how the problem can be solved,
and finally, optimal solutions have to be presented.
Training takes account of all the areas of competence of professional life. Due to the rapid obsolescence of technical knowledge, ever-changing
and increasingly complex work structures and
processes, as well as modified human values and
self-images, education and training must cover
not only methodological and technical competences but also those of a behavioural nature
(competence = capacity to act). For this reason
UCH identifies with the following competence
model.

Personal competence is central to all the other

competences. It reflects how the individual relates to his or her own person, both in the present
and in the future. On the one hand there is the
fundamental matter of how the person handles
and manages himself or herself in the present.
This includes aspects such as self-control, selfimage, self-motivation, time management and
self-responsibility. On the other hand, this area
of competence also includes how the person
behaves in relation to his or her own future,
including, for example, the ability and willingness to develop and grow as a person.

In the field of professional competence, the UCH

training programme covers the entire area of
power supply and its industrial use, i.e. the
power supply market, design and layout of the
energy supply system and its industrial installations, as well as the operation and maintenance
of all related equipment and products covering
the entire life-cycle of the installations and components. This means the training must help the
user determine his requirements even before the
plant is ordered, as well as train his staff through
all the stages leading up to and including
operation and maintenance.

In order to fulfil above requirements and the

high expectations of our external and internal
trainees UCH commits itself to the priciples of
customer satisfaction. This ensures that the training
needs of those taking part in seminars and courses
are satisfied to the mutual benefit of both customers
and ABB.

Methodical competence is defined as the ability to

handle technical knowledge, processes and problems. Methodical competence is one of the prerequisites for developing technical competence
and using it successfully. This applies mainly within our business and processing processes, where
the objective is to obtain information, to structure it and interpret it correctly, to process it, store
it, present it in suitable form, and use it. Methodical competence also includes the ability to use
problem-solving techniques and to construct
problem-solving processes.

TRAINING OFFERED

Management and Leadership

This is a comprehensive management development curriculum for developing the leadership competence of junior managers, which includes the Leadership Development Programme (LDP) and the
General Management Programme (GMP). There are
also individual seminars which address important
management topics with the aim of preparing junior
managers and other employees with corresponding
potential for future managerial positions as early and
fully as possible. The emphasis is on management
development programmes with integral management training. The objective is to develop managers
who have the ability to work in teams, as well as
having profound knowledge of an entire company,
and who are capable of developing and creating a
cross-company management philosophy.

The training offered by UCH falls into two

groups: firstly, fully developed courses which you
will find in our official training programme (printed,
on CD or in Intranet/Internet), and secondly, courses which can be tailored at any time to the specific
training needs of a particular target group.
Descriptions, dates and prices of all fully developed courses are contained in this course programme.
These are training events with predefined content,
dates, duration, price, language and location, which
are classified into the following four categories:
Technology and Solutions
These are both non-product- and product-related courses which form the so-called basic and product courses. Basic courses are intended mainly for
planning and project personnel from all areas of the
electricity supply industry and its industrial plants.
The training content is design and application oriented, i.e. it covers power network design and planning, basic technologies, concepts, operating principles, calculation methods, project planning, etc.
Product courses are intended mainly for project
planning, operating, and maintenance personnel
from all areas of the energy supply industry and its
industrial plants. The course content is product-related, e.g. construction, functionality, technical data,
configuration, installation, operation, maintenance,
trouble-shooting, safety regulations, etc.

Personal Competences and Skills

These courses cover the personal development of
social competences such as constructive behaviour
in a team, winning communication, train-the-trainer,
empathy and sensitivity, intercultural communication, work and meeting techniques, problem-solving
methodologies, etc.

Business Processes and Tools

This category mainly comprises training courses
relating to the business processes of development &
manufacture, project management, product sales and
services. The courses also provide knowledge of the
respective application programs, methods and techniques.

TARGET GROUPS

LECTURERS

The target groups are the various categories of

customers and ABB employees who require information and knowledge to be able to fulfil all the
functions of their professional lives.

All UCH lecturers are members of a a lecturer

pool. It includes internal ABB personnel (managers,
consultants, sales, engineering, and other technical
staff) and non-ABB personnel (guest speakers from
universities, customers, and others). Besides teaching, lecturers are responsible for producing and
maintaining the teaching content of their subject
modules. Train-the-trainer (TtT) courses in teaching
methods and aids are organised for new lecturers,
and to keep existing lecturers up-to-date.

At one end of the scale these are managerial staff

who wish to acquire competences to enable them to
perform the leadership and managerial tasks required at their functional level. They range from junior
managers with a need not only for managerial and
technical knowledge but also for development of
their personality, to members of middle management who wish to acquire additional business, strategic and leadership competences to enable them
subsequently to handle complex business tasks in
upper management. At the other end of the scale are
technical staff who require knowledge and expertise
to perform their functions along the entire valuecreation chain: company managers and decision
makers who have to evaluate the technologies to be
used and specify the functional requirements of the
systems and products, through to operators who
monitor the equipment when it is in operation and
have to respond to its displays and messages.

The whole purpose of the above training concept is

to satisfy the training needs of those taking part,
and
to communicate correct information.
This is achieved by a policy of continuous improvement of our training management processes,
accompanied by the use of quality assurance measures such as:
providing complete and correct documentation
using correct technical terminology and definitions
applying effective didactic methods
conducting course evaluations and tests
keeping reliable records of courses attended and
training received by every trainee.

Since our trainees come from all parts of the

world, it is important that we give due consideration
to the differences between their cultures and our
own. It is similarly important to find out the
trainees objectives, educational background and
previous experience before finalising the course programme.

ABB University Switzerland

Trainees are asked to evaluate every seminar and

course on its completion. Based on the results,
actions are defined and implemented to continuously improve the quality of training.
