It

is the number of heart beat per unit

time.
Expressed in beats per minute (bpm).
Used by medical professionals in the
diagnosis and tracking health
conditions
Used for monitoring heart rate to gain
maximum efficiency from training

AGE

BEATS PER MINUTE

(BPM)

Babies to age 1

100-160

Children ages 1-10

60-140

Children age 10+

and adults
Athletes

60-100
40-60

Is the highest number of beats the heart

can contract in one minute.
A tool in determining training intensities
and to measure or predict level of
exercise
By treadmill stress testing
Estimated through age predicted formula:

HRmax = 220 - age

Also known as Training Heart Rate

A desired range of heart rate reached
during exercise which enables the heart
and lungs to receive the most benefit
from workout.

THR

= HRmax * intensity

Example: age = 19; intensity = 60%

THR = (220-19)*0.60
= 120.6 bpm

Calculation of training heart rate that

adjusts for measured individual differences.

THR=

[% * (HRmax - RHR)] + RHR

= [0.60 * (201bpm 78 bmp)] + 78 bpm

=[0.60 * (123 bpm)] + 78 bpm
= [73.8 bpm] + 78 bpm
=151.8 bpm
