Ladies!

Were supremely disappointed by the 100 Greatest Speeches! (shout)

If they are considered great they are supposed to engage us! To influence us! To make
us FEEL something! But instead, we are bored, and not moved at all! (shout)
Why?
Because they are so consistently composed, so monotonously cadenced, so similar to
each other that I cannot even tell the difference between the second speech and every
speech after that!

Except for this speech, that were going to talk about today!
Its a speech delivered by Mario Savio, who was a student leader in Free Speech
Movement, and who influenced a lot of students and faculties to support freedom of
speech and academic freedom through his passionate and eloquent speeches.
Today were talking about a Sit-in Address he made on the Steps of Sproul Hall in the University
of California, Berkeley.
What is so special about this speech?
After listening to more than twenty plain speeches, why did his speech
succeed in capturing our attention and stimulating our minds?
The answer is simple, it is the burning PASSION!

He was so loud throughout his speech that people can completely sense his
power and how strongly he feels about the cause hes advocating for! His
voice, not only reached peoples minds, but also penetrated their hearts,
forced them to listen to the words from the deepest of his heart!
By saying so, we dont mean that being loud is sole the way of being
HEARD but what we mean is that his loud voice gives exponential power to
his words and the convey his message in the firmest way possible. The
agreement of the listeners with Mario is evident from their enthusiastic
reaction to his each and every single word in the form of loud claps, and
shouts.

We should also note that Mario Savio is not reading from a paper at all, unlike
many political leaders in the 100 Greatest Speeches. It is because his words
are spontaneous, his heart being connected to what he is saying. He was not
faking his belief and he was not reading what was predetermined like a
machine - he deeply believed in his words and he had a strong incentive to
engage other people and make them support his cause too!
He is a confident charismatic and unafraid of anything! He has the
courage to publicly challenge the authorities, and shout out to them that
unless there voices are heard, the system will not work, they wont let it

work, because I quote we are a bunch of raw materials that don't mean
to be -- have any process upon us. against their will.
His apt use repetition, metaphors and alliteration adds a finishing touch to
this memorable speech.

Mario Savio also showed people the seriousness and graveness of this matter
by his unsmiling and angry face. His gestures reinforced his indignance and
how strongly he feels that the authorities are preventing the students from
academic freedom.
He says We're human beings! This is a very powerful statement and a
well thought one. By saying so, he unites the whole student body, as
humans! And as clich as it might sound, union is strength. He included
everyone in this movement, making them part of a whole, striving towards
a common goal, freedom, freedom of speech, freedom of being heard, a
fundamental freedom, whereby one can express their heart.

We are so taught and programmed to make objective evaluations, to appear serious

and dispassionate when we make speeches. But we want to let you know that there is a
value in SHOUTING OUT LOUD, in appearing emotional, in speaking for change.
Because if we want to make people feel, then we must ourselves feel strongly for what
we believe in, in the first place!
