Grocery Store Project

You are currently working for a grocery store as a technology person. It is your job to make
sure that the self-check-out machines are functioning properly. One night when you are
working you are told by one of the employees that something must be off with the weights
of an item because they have to keep resetting the machine after a number of items. It is
your job to fix the problem. On the 2nd page, there are pictures of what was purchased and
whether there was an error or not.

PART 1

1. Start by determining which item(s) are causing the error. Write a paragraph
explaining how you know which items have the correct weight and which item(s)
have incorrect weight(s). Make sure to explain the order that you looked at each
picture and what that picture told you. Please use full sentences. NOTE: EVEN
THOUGH THE SCALES ARE GETTING ERRORS, IT IS STILL RECORDING THE
CORRECT WEIGHT.

PLEASE DO THIS ON ANOTHER SHEET OF PAPER OR TYPE UP YOUR RESPONSE.

2. The weights of each purchase are recorded in the table below. Determine the
weights of each individual item from the purchases given. Write a paragraph
explaining how you mathematically decided the weights of each item. Make sure to
explain the order that you looked at each picture and what that picture told you.
Please use full sentences.

PLEASE DO THIS ON ANOTHER SHEET OF PAPER OR TYPE UP YOUR RESPONSE.

PART 2

Use the weights of the items you came up with for the previous problems. Your job now is
to package the items in plastic grocery bags. For each item, determine the maximum
number of that item that could fit in a grocery bag without breaking the bag. (We will
pretend that these are Mary Poppins bags that can fit as many items as possible, but just
have a weight restriction.) Explain how you determined your answers. Your plastic bag
can only hold 25 lbs per bag.

Determine the maximum number of each item that will fit in your plastic bag without going
over the weight limit. Provide a detailed explanation of how you came up with your
answer. Write a short paragraph for each item. (You may use the area below as scratch
paper, but please write your paragraphs on another sheet of paper or type them up.)

PART 3

Your job responsibilities have changed. You are now the bagger. Determine the smallest
number of plastic bags needed to package up this load. Include in your answer a list of how
many of each item will be in each bag. You may not put half of an item in one bag and half in
another. (Your plastic bags can still only hold 25 pounds. You are still assuming that it is a Mary Poppins bag
where you do not have to worry about the volume of each item, just their weights.)
