Potential Energy
Potential Energy
Where
m = mass of the body,
h is the height attained due to the body's displacement and
g is the acceleration due to gravity which is constant on earth.
Potential energy formula helps to calculate the mass, height or potential energy if any of the two quantities are given. It is
expressed in Joules.
Solved Examples
Question 1: A ball of mass 2 Kg is kept on the hill of height 3Km. Calculate the potential energy possessed by it?
Solution:
Mass of the body (m) = 2kg,
Height (h) = 3 Km,
Potential Energy possessed by the body = m g h
Where g = 9.8 m/s2
Where,
m = mass of the body,
v is the velocity with which body is moving.

Solved Examples
Question 1: A car is moving with the velocity of 10 m/s and is having mass of 250 Kg. Calculate its Kinetic energy?
Solution:
Given: Mass of the body m = 250 Kg,
Velocity v = 10 m/s,
Kinetic energy is given by K.E = 1212 mv2
= 1212 250 Kg (10 m/s)2
= 12500 Kgm2/s2.
Question 2: A man is carrying a trolley of mass 6 Kg and having Kinetic energy of 40 J. Calculate its Velocity with which he
is running?
Solution:
Given: Mass m = 6 Kg,
Kinetic energy K.E = 60 J,
2K.Em
Velocity v = 2K.Em
= 240J6Kg
240J6Kg
= 13.3313.33
= 3.65 m/s.
The man is running with the velocity of 3.65 m/s
Kinetic Energy
All moving things have kinetic energy. It is energy possessed by an object due to its motion
or movement. These include very large things, like planets, and very small ones, like atoms. The
heavier a thing is, and the faster it moves, the more kinetic energy it has.
Now let's see this illustration below.
There is a small and large ball resting on a table.
Potential energy
In physics, potential energy is energy possessed by a body by virtue of its position relative to others, stresses within
itself, electric charge, and other factors.[1][2] Common types include the gravitational potential energy of an object that
depends on its mass and its distance from the center of mass of another object, the elastic potential energy of an
extended spring, and the electric potential energy of an electric charge in an electric field. The unit for energy in
the International System of Units (SI) is the joule, which has the symbol J.
What is energy?
Physicists, who are scientists who study force, motion and energy, say that energy is the ability to do work, and work is moving
something against a force, like gravity. There are a lot of different kinds of energy in the universe, and that energy can do
different things.
Energy can be found in many things, and takes many forms. There is a kind of energy called kinetic energy in objects that are
moving. There is something that scientists call potential energy in objects at rest that will make them move if resistance is
removed.
