Teaching and Assessment Pack

Introduction
Unit 7: Machining Techniques

Unit overview
On completion of this unit, learners should:

select and use tools and work-holding devices for drilling and for turning or milling

make work pieces using drilling and turning or milling techniques safely.

Edexcels specification provides you with an outline of the unit content you should deliver. It is key that
you place emphasis on the vocational relevance of this unit throughout your delivery.
This unit is predominantly a practical one and vocational relevance can be enhanced by visits to local
engineering companies. These will give learners the opportunity to see at first hand how drilling,
milling, turning and other machining techniques are used in the production of manufactured products.
The majority of unit delivery should be in an appropriately equipped workshop. Learners should have
the opportunity to use tools and work-holding devices in both a drilling machine and either a mill or
lathe. Access to artefacts and engineering drawings also enhance delivery with safe working practices
being emphasised continually.

Assessment guidance
Learner achievement for this unit will be assessed through a series of assignments that are designed
by you as the teacher. You should consider when your learners are ready to undertake these
assignments. There should be one assignment per learning aim. When designing assignments, any
related pass, merit and/or distinction criteria should be covered in one task. The grade achieved will be
determined by a learners response. Merit and distinction criteria generally require a qualitative
improvement in a learners evidence and not simply the production of more evidence at the same
level.
The first assignment should allow learners to build upon practice activities they have carried out in the
workshop. An activity involving drilling and milling or turning could be used with learners selecting
appropriate tools and demonstrating how to position and secure these tools. Straightforward work
pieces could be provided, allowing learners the opportunity to use work-holding devices in preparation
for a single straightforward machining operation. Much of the performance evidence can be obtained
using witness testimonies or photographic evidence although merit and distinction criteria often require
written responses demonstrating explanation and evaluative reflection. The second assignment could
follow a similar process with learners completing two more complex activities involving the setting of
parameters and compliance checks. It is likely that the second assignment will involve several
machining operations.
Ready-made assignments are available from Pearson at www.btec.co.uk/engineering2012. All
assignments, whether designed by you or obtained from Pearson, must be internally verified by
someone in your centre to ensure they are fit for purpose and appropriate for learners in your centre.

This is provided to illustrate how the resources in this pack can be used alongside the student book to
help you create interesting lessons for this unit. You may wish to adapt this scheme for your own use.

Lesson plan
This has been provided to help you get started with your first lesson. You may wish to adapt this for
your own use or use this as a template to plan other lessons.

Presentation slides
Use these to introduce the learning aims. They contain useful diagrams from the student book, as well
as presentation notes to help with your delivery. They are referenced in the Scheme of work as PS.
You may wish to adapt these slides for your own use.

Activity sheets
These sheets can be used by individuals, pairs or groups in lessons or as homework to help reinforce
knowledge and understanding. They are referenced in the Scheme of work as AS and are provided
in Word so they can be modified to suit your teaching needs.

Answers to activities
Where a definitive answer can be given, answers are provided for activities in the student book and for
activity sheets in this pack.

Template forms
These template forms can be used by learners as they are, or be modified to help structure research
findings etc. They are not designed to be exhaustive, or the sole recording method of recording
information. They are referenced as TF in the Scheme of Work.

Links to other units

Unit 7 has links with a number of other units. See the Scheme of work for further guidance on how to
deliver or assess Unit 7 alongside the units listed above. Where this opportunity presents itself, you
must ensure that work is assessed against all of the target criteria from each unit and not assume that
because a piece of work meets criteria from one unit it will automatically meet similar criteria from a
different unit.
