MINIMALISM TUBULAR BELLS

TASK 1 Learn how to play the melody line from Tubular bells

TASK 2 Record the melody line into Garageband.


TASK 3 create 5 different tracks, copy and paste your loop onto them. Now change their
sounds, their positioning etc
TASK 4 Create your own minimalist piece of music, layering parts from Tubular Bells as
well as changing parts.

IDEAS BOX:
Recorded the melody and loop it over and over (ostinato)
Record slightly different versions of the melody, loop and link them all together
(change 1 note each time)
Make each melody note last 2 clicks (augmentation)
Make each melody note quicker so that you play 2 notes per click (diminution)
Fade parts in and out
Bring parts in and out at different times
Put the same parts on two different tracks but stagger them so that they play out
of sync with each other (phase-shifting)

GARAGE BAND HELP


SETTING UP GARAGEBAND
1. Open Garageband,
2. Select loops
3. On the right hand side click desktop-year 9-your class
4. Call the file TubularBells_YourName
5. Click create

CREATING A NEW TRACK IN GARAGEBAND


1. At the top click Track new track software instrument

RECORD IN GARAGEBAND
1. Make sure the metronome and count in are selected as this gives you your click
track.
2. Click the red record button, you will get 4 clicks before it starts recording.

CHANGING THE SOUND IN GARAGEBAND


1. Click the i icon at the bottom right of your screen
2. You will then be able to select different instrument from the
panel above it

COPY AND PASTE IN GARAGEBAND


1. Select the loop you want to copy
2. Click edit-copy
3. Select the track you wish to past the loop to and move the red line to where you wish
it to line up
4. Click edit-paste

NO SOUND IN GARAGEBAND
1. Unplug the white cable at the back of the keyboard
2. You will get two messages on the screen, click the blue button on both of them
3. Plug the cable back in
4. You will get two more messages, click the blue buttons again
5. Your sound should now work
