as Propsed Section20 of the NationalBureau of Standards(NBS)Handbook
H28 by the Interdental
Screw-ThreadCannittee (ISIC)
prior to its
terminationin Novenber 1976. Responsibilityfor the standardwas then
transferredto the GeneralSenices Administration(GSA).
FED-S~H28/20 was preparedby the Efense Industrid SupplyCenter
(DLA-IS). It incorporatedthe ~rican NationalStandardfor Screw-Thread

The inspectionmthod need not be indicatedat each threadcall~ut if it

The ins-ion

5.1.1.1 systems 21, 22 and 23 are in accordancewith ASME B1.3M-1992
for UN, UNR, UNJ, M and MJ threads. It is recawended that for System 23,

N(YIE:System 21A in ASME B1.3M-1992is used only for mtric threads

5.1.1.2 For specialapplications, the screw thread on a threaded
prduct my requireinspxtion not consistentwith any of the standard
gagingsystem. In such cases, one of the standardgaging systm should
be selectd and tified by specifyingthe additioml thread characteristicsand gages fran Tables 1 or 2 in ASME B1.3M-1992,as applicable.
5.1.2 Selection. Since mst screw threadapplicationsdo not require
that all of the featuresdescribedin the applicablesectionof
FE&STD-H28 be inspected,selectionof the appropriateimpction ~thod
will be based on those featuresimportantto the end use. Consideration
should& given to such factorsas form, fit, functionand fabricationof
the threadedprahrt. The cost of inspectionshouldbe cmpared to the
possiblecosts resultingfra uncertaintiesinherentin each ins-ion
mthod . Guidancefor sel~ion of an ins-ion ~thod frcm the three

Footnotesto Tables XX.1, XX.2 and XX.3
(a) Use ap@icable X, W or Z gage tolerance.
(b) Taper, straightnessincludingbllnmth barrel shape and hour glass
shape, roundnessshall be within the X, W or Z tolerancedependingon the
elemnt masured. In other words, if these featuresare masurd at
pitch cylinder, the tolerancefor pitch diamter applies.
(c) Use manufacturersreccmmded proceduresfor his gage for checkingthe
thread featuresand alignmnt of indicatinggage c~nents.
(d) New rolls and segnentsshall be within X tolerance. Worn rolls or
segmnts shall be replacedwhen a singlethreadelemnt wars outsideof
X tolerance.
(e) Pitch diamter of an internalthread, masured by best size ball
contacts,will k 0.0001to 0.0002inch (0.0025to 0.005m) largerthan
the pitch diamter, gaged indirectly~ a snug fittingmaster
threadplug gage or lockedsegmnts of an indicatinggage which were
masured by best size wire mthod. This differenceis due to the
functionalsize of the rester threadplug gage or ldced segmnts which
unavoidablyhave smll variationsin lead, flank angle, taper and
roundness.
(f) Pitch diamter is usuallytransferredfrm threadsettinggage.
(9) When the gage is set by adjust.mntbased upon actualmasumd pitch
diamter of the settingmaster, the master shallnet all W
tolerancesexcept for pitch diamter, which my have a tolerance
increasedto X.
(h) For externalthreadpitch diamter size, adjustablethreadsnap
gages and indicatingthreadgagesmy be set frm one or mre of the
follwing: threadedsettingplug gage, Z toleranceplain cylindricalplug
gage, gage blm~, directmasurment and speciallydesignd transfer

Gagingelemnts mst be qualifiedfor settingfrm their
outsidediamters.

(i) For internalthreadpitch diamter size, S- types of adjustablesmp

gages my be set frm Z toleranceplain ring gage or directmas~nt.
Gagingelmvmts mst be qualifiedfor settingfrm their outside
diameters.
(j) Pitch diametersize my be set by directmasuremnt over wires on 180
segmnts, with speciallydesignedtransferstandardsor by Z tolerance
plain ring gages when gagingelemnts are qualifiedfor settingfrm
their outsidediamters.
(k) W tolerancesettingplug gagesmy k used until a singlethread element
