COUGARS OPEN PAC-12 PLAY HOSTING OREGON

Washington States opens Pac-12 Conference play hosting the University of Oregon Saturday at 6:30
p.m. on the Pac-12 Network.
NEXT WEEK
The Cougars will hit the road to face defending Pac-12 champion Stanford University next Saturday
at 7:30 p.m. either on ESPN or ESPN2.
ABOUT OREGON-WSU SERIES
Washington State snapped an eight-game skid to Oregon with a 45-38 win in double overtime in
Eugene last season. Oregon leads the all-time series 47-39-7 and has won four straight meetings in
Pullman including a 38-31 decision in 2014. Washington States last win against UO in Pullman came
in 2006, 34-23. WSU is looking for back-to-back wins over the Ducks for the first time since posting a
32-21 victory in 2002 in Pullman and a 55-16 win in Eugene in 2003.
COLLEGE GAMEDAY RECORD
Dating back to the beginning of the 2004 season, ESPNs College GameDay has had the WSU flag
appear throughout the show. The streak is now at 182 after last weeks appearance at Tennessee.
Two flags Ol Crimson and Gray have been flown in the background of the GameDay set by
dozens of friends and alumni. The Gray flag was added in 2014 after Whitey was retired in honor
of Steve Gleasons No White Flags. WSU recognized the GameDay flag wavers in a pregame
ceremony prior to the Montana State game in 2010. In addition to the flags that fly, there is a traveling
flag signed by the holders after each episode. The traveling flag is retired after each season, the first
of which is hanging in WSUs Alumni Center.

FALK CONTINUES TO RACK UP THE NUMBERS (PAGES 16-17)
Quarterback Luke Falk has picked up where he left off from 2015, as one of the leading quarterbacks
in the country. Falk opened the season with 418 yards and four touchdowns against Eastern Washington, followed with 480 yards and four more scores at Boise State, nearly leading WSU to a fourthquarter comeback and added three more touchdown passes in the win over Idaho. Falk enters the
week fifth in the country in passing yards per game (374.7), No. 12 in passing touchdowns (11) and
third in completion percentage (.741). Last season, Falk finished the year with a school-record ten
300-yard games and five 400-yard games. In just 21 career games including 18 starts, Falk owns 16
career 300-yard games, second-most in WSU history, the fourth-most touchdown passes (62) and
the fifth-most passing yards (7,549).
FALKS FOURTH-QUARTER COMEBACKS
Luke Falk is no stranger to leading fourth-quarter comebacks, owning five fourth-quarter comebacks in his career including four last season. The first came in 2014 at Oregon State, WSU trailed
early in the fourth and Falk led a pair of scoring drives for a 39-32 victory. Earlier this season, trailing
by four with 1:31 remaining at Rutgers, Falk leading WSU on a 10-play, 90-yard drive capped by an
8-yard touchdown pass to River Cracraft with 13 seconds remaining. In the win at Oregon, Falk led
WSU on a pair of scoring drives late in the fourth quarter that erased a 10-point deficit and sent the
game into overtime after an eight-yard touchdown pass to Dom Williams with one second remaining. In overtime, Falk rushed for a touchdown and then threw for another before the Cougar defense
picked off a pass in the second overtime to clinch the win. Against Arizona State, trailing 24-17 to
start the fourth quarter, Falk led the Cougars on three touchdown drives (73, 99 and 75 yards) in the
quarter, capping each one with touchdown throws to post a 38-24 victory. His last one came at No.
18 UCLA, trailing by three with 1:09 remaining, Falk led the Cougars on a seven-play 75-yard drive,
capped by a 21-yard touchdown pass to Gabe Marks with three seconds remaining to knock off the
Bruins.
NATIONAL RECOGNITION FOR LUKE LAST SEASON
Last season, Luke Falk was a Manning Award Watch List, a Davey OBrien Quarterback Award
Semifinalist, one of 15 Players to Watch for The Walter Camp Football Foundation 2015 Player of
the Year award and was one of three finalists for the Burlsworth Trophy, given to the nations top
player who started his career as a walk-on. The Walter Camp Player of the Year award is the fourtholdest college football award in the nation. The Davey OBrien Award is presented annually to the
nations best college quarterback and is the nations oldest and most prestigious national quarterback award. Falk was one of 17 semifinalists and earned a spot on the Davey OBrien Award Great
8 Performance of the Week five times this season. Falk led the FBS in passing yards-per-game
(380.5), was third in total offense (370.9), and tied for fourth in passing touchdowns (38) and fifth in
passing yards (4,566). In Pac-12 play, Falk averaged 399.5 passing yards-per-game, completed 69.9
percent of his passes and threw 28 touchdowns against seven interceptions and also rushed for two
scores. Earlier in the season, Falk was named the Walter Camp National FBS Player of the Week
(the first Cougar to receive the honor since the 2004 season), the Pac-12 Offensive Player of the
Week three times and the Maxwell Award Player of the Week.
NEW LOOK LINE
The offensive line has a new look to it this season after the departure of three-year starters Joe Dahl
at left tackle and Gunner Eklund at left guard who combined for 79 starts. Dahl capped his career
earning All-Pac-12 honors and was a fifth-round draft choice by the Detroit Lions. The Cougars return a trio of starters in center Riley Sorenson (24 starts), right guard Eduardo Middleton (28 starts)
and right tackle Cole Madison (24 starts) who have started next to one another for the past two
seasons. Taking over at left tackle is redshirt-sophomore Andre Dillard who appeared at left tackle
in three games last year, making his collegiate debut in the second half at No. 18 UCLA and went on
to start against Colorado and at Washington. At left guard, redshirt-junior Cody OConnell is in his
first season as a starter after playing on the field goal team all of last season.
COUGAR OFFENSIVE LINE BONE AWARDS
Each week, Washington State coaches give out the Bone award to the offensive lineman who
performs the best during the previous game. Left guard Cody OConnell picked up his first Bone

COUGAR RUSHING ATTACK BREAKS OUT

The Cougar rushing attack of redshirt-juniors Jamal Morrow and Gerard Wicks, and redshirt-freshman James Williams highlighted WSUs 228-rushing yard performance in the win over Idaho, the
most by a WSU team under coach Mike Leach and most since the 2011 season-opener. Williams
led the way with 126 yards and a score, the first 100-yard rusher since Wicks ran for 123 against
Colorado last season and was the most since Dwight Tardy posted 214 at UCLA in 2007. Williams
also became the first Cougar freshman to record a 100-yard game since Tardy in the 2006 Apple Cup.
The Cougars had three different running backs score touchdowns in the win as Williams score from
PAC-12 NCAA two-yards out, Wicks scored on a two-yard rush, and later after recovering a fumble on a kickoff,

2015 DEFENSE MADE STRIDES UNDER GRINCH

The Washington State defense clamped down the hatches in 2015 under first-year defensive
coordinator Alex Grinch. The Cougars defensive unit allowed 27.7 ppg and 416.6 ypg while forcing
24 turnovers. WSU kept the explosive plays (20+ yards) to a minimum giving up 56 in 2015, averaging
4.3 per game. In 2014, the Cougar defense allowed 6.1 explosive plays per game, a total of 73
on the season. By removing special teams touchdowns allowed, WSU allowed 23.3 ppg, a vast
improvement after allowing 38.6 ppg in 2014. The Cougars finished the season with 24 turnovers
forced, averaging 1.8 takeaways per game and tripled the amount of turnovers from 2014 (8). In the

GET THE BALL BACK

Defensive coordinator Alex Grinch emphasized the need to force turnovers and get the ball back
to the Air Raid offense and the Cougars did just that in 2015. Washington State forced 24 turnovers,
fourth in the Pac-12 and three times as many as the 2014 total of eight. The Cougars recorded 13
interceptions, recovered 11 fumbles, and led the Pac-12 with 16 fourth-down stops. WSU received
4TH-QUARTER COMEBACKS
a big boost from the return of Shalom Luani who missed the first game. The senior free safety
picked off a pair of passes at Boise State and helped the Cougar defense record three turnovers,

SPECIAL TEAMS PROVIDES BIG BOOST

Cougar special teams provided a couple highlights in the win over Idaho week three, scoring a pair
of touchdowns, blocking a field goal and recovered a fumble, scoring touchdowns on both plays.
Midway through the second quarter, nose tackle Robert Barber blocked a 32-yard field goal attempt
and cornerback Marcellus Pippins picked up the loose ball and raced 72 yards for the touchdown,
giving WSU its first touchdown return of a blocked field goal in school history (dating back through
the 1983 season). It was the first touchdown scored on special teams since Michael Bumpus returned a punt 87 yards for touchdown at Nevada in 2005. Midway through the fourth quarter, the
Cougar kickoff team forced a fumble that Gerard Wicks scooped up and returned 11 yards for a
touchdown. It was the first time the Cougars scored two special teams touchdowns in the same
game since returning two punts for touchdowns against Idaho in 1973.
RANCHO SANTA MARGARITA TAKEOVER
The Cougars have tapped into the Rancho Santa Margarita High School pipeline, currently owning
four players from the school in center, Riley Sorenson, defensive lineman Nick Begg and receivers
River Cracraft and Kyle Sweet. One other Coug to point out who also went to RSMHS, would be
Golden State Warrior Klay Thompson.
POLYNESIAN PIPELINE
The Washington State roster has seen an influx in Polynesian players since Mike Leach and his
coaching staff arrived in 2012. Assistant Head Coach / Defensive Line Coach Joe Salavea, a native
of Pago Pago, American Samoa and a nine-year NFL veteran, has helped bring a number of players to Pullman in his three seasons at Washington State. The 2016 roster has 16 players who are of
Polynesian decent including seven who list their hometown from American Samoa.
LIKE FATHER, LIKE SON
Three Cougars share a unique bond with their dads and/or grandpa, each have worn the crimson a
gray. Redshirt-sophomore left tackle Andre Dillards dad, Mitch was an offensive lineman and tight
end for the Cougars in the late 1980s; redshirt-junior linebacker Isaac Dotsons dad, Michael was an
All-American wrestler for WSU from 1983-86; redshirt-junior linebacker Peyton Pelluers dad, Scott
also played linebacker for the Cougs, matching Peytons No. 47 from 1977-80; Peytons grandpa,
Arnie played end for WSU in the mid 1950s and his great grandpa, Carl, played flanker in the 1920s.
SEVEN COUGARS TO BE INDUCTED INTO WSU HALL OF FAME
The WSU Hall of Fame will welcomed in seven new members Sept. 17. Joining the current 206
members was Marv Chamberlain (Baseball), Erin Elridge (Swimming), Jason Gesser (Football), Mark
Hendrickson (Basketball/Baseball), Mike Price (Football Coach), Jennifer Robertson (Track & Field)
and Marcia Saneholtz (WSU Administrator).
FALK NAMED TO 2016 AWARD WATCH LISTS
Quarterback Luke Falk was named to the 2016 Davey OBrien Award, Rotary Lombardi Award and
the Maxwell Award Watch List. Falk is one of 30 quarterbacks named to the watch list for the Maxwell Award presented annually to the nations best college quarterback and was also named to
the Maxwell Award Watch List for Americas Player of the Year. Falk, a redshirt-junior, was an AllPac-12 first-team selection last season after leading the country in passing at 380.5 yards-per-game
and guiding the Cougars to a 9-4 record capped by a Sun Bowl victory over Miami. The Logan, Utah
native set a school record with 38 touchdown passes, good for fourth in the nation, and was second
in school history with 4,566 yards. Falk tallied three Pac-12 Player of the Week honors and was Pac12 All-Academic honorable mention.
MARKS NAMED TO 2016 BILETNIKOFF, MAXWELL AWARD WATCH LISTS
Wide receiver Gabe Marks was named to the 2016 Biletnikoff Award and Maxwell Award Watch
Lists. The Biletnikoff Award recognizes the nations most outstanding receiver each year and the
Maxwell Award is presented to the nations Player of the Year. Marks was one of 10 Biletnikoff
Award semifinalists last season, earning All-Pac-12 First Team honors and tallied 104 receptions
for 1,196 yards and a school-record 15 touchdowns. Marks led the Pac-12 in receptions, touchdown
catches and was second in receiving yards while also tallying four 100-yard games.
SORENSON NAMED TO 2016 RIMINGTON TROPHY WATCH LIST
Center Riley Sorenson was named to the 2016 Rimington Trophy Watch List. Sorenson, a senior from
Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif., has started 21 games over the past two seasons and has been one
of the anchors for a Cougar offensive line that helped WSU lead the nation in passing each of the
last two years. Additionally, he was named a 2015 All-Pac-12 honorable mention selection. Sorenson
also received the 2016 Pac-12 Sportsmanship Award for the strength of character and dedication to
his team that he displayed throughout the 2015 season even while he and his family faced extreme
personal challenges. The Rimington Trophy is presented annually to the Most Outstanding Center in

COLLEGE FOOTBALL PLAYOFF EXTRA YARD FOR TEACHER

The Extra Yard for Teachers Program kicked Sept. 17 with the College Football Playoff Foundation.
The CFP is awarding each institution within the Pac-12 $10,000 to benefit an elementary school
teacher or teachers in your community throughout the season, concluding at the 2016 Pac-12
Football Championship Game. Washington State will gift three elementary schools in Pullman with
Google Chrome Books as part of the program.
STEVE GLEASON RECRUIT SUITE DEBUTS IN COUGAR FOOTBALL COMPLEX
WSU announced the naming of the Steve Gleason Recruit Suite, inside the Cougar Football Complex this summer. Gleason, the Washington State Athletic Hall of Famer who played football and
baseball in a Cougar uniform from 1995-99, was on hand as the room all future Cougar football players will walk through was named in his honor. The opportunity arrived courtesy of Cougar alumnus
Glenn Osterhouts naming donation of $250,000. With his pledge, Osterhout, a 1983 graduate who is
a certified financial planner in Bellevue, was presented the opportunity to name the recruiting room
inside the Cougar Football Complex.
NICHOL, SHEPHARD JOIN COUGAR COACHING STAFF
The Cougar coaching staff added two new position coaches as Dave Nichol joined the staff as
the outside receivers coach and JaMarcus Shephard as the inside receivers coach. Nichol is no
stranger to a Mike Leach-coached team, having spent three seasons (2003-05) as an offensive line
assistant at Texas Tech under the current Cougar head coach. Most recently, Nichol served as the
offensive coordinator at East Carolina in 2015. Shephard arrived at WSU following two seasons as
the receivers coach at Western Kentucky University. In addition to his duties as receivers coach
the past two seasons, Shephard added special teams duties for the 2015 season.
COUGAR FOOTBALL BROADCAST TEAM
Hall of fame announcer Bob Robertson is in his 50th season calling Cougar football games, and
according to a nation-wide survey of sports information directors, is the longest tenured radio
announcer in the country with the next closest being Bill Hillgrove who has announced 46 straight
seasons at Pitt. Robertson began calling WSU games in 1964 and with the exception of a three-year
period in 1969-71, has been calling Cougar games ever since. Robertson now hosts the Cougars
pre, halftime and postgame shows, while also providing analysis during the games. Matt Chazanow
is in his second season as the play-by-play voice for Cougar football, mens basketball and baseball
broadcasts. Joining Chazanow and Robertson in the booth for his third season will be Cougar legend Jason Gesser who quarterbacked WSU to the 2001 Sun Bowl and 2003 Rose Bowl. Returning
for her fifth season as the sideline reporter is Jessamyn McIntyre, an executive producer for 710
ESPN Seattle.

OREGON-WASHINGTON STATE SERIES HISTORY

LAST MEETING IN PULLMAN
Sept. 20 2014
NO. 2 Oregon def. WASHINGTON STATE, 38-31
PULLMAN, Wash. Marcus Mariota threw for 329
yards and five touchdowns as No. 2 Oregon held off
Washington State 38-31. Devon Allen and Keanon
Lowe each had two touchdown receptions for Oregon
(4-0, 1-0 Pac-12), which has won eight straight games
against Washington State. Connor Halliday threw for
436 yards and four touchdowns for Washington State
(1-3, 0-1), which boasts the nations top passing attack. They came into the game as 24-point underdogs,
but stayed close the entire way. Washington State
played stout defense in the first half, sacking Mariota five times and recording seven tackles for losses,
while holding the Ducks to a total of 210 yards. The
score was tied 21-all at halftime. However, the Cougars offense stalled in the second half, as the Ducks
outscored them 17-10 to take the win. Mariota completed 21 of 25 passes with no interceptions. Halliday
was 43 for 63. Washington State outgained the potent
Oregon offense 298 yards to 210 in the first half. The
Ducks then drove to the Cougars 15 on the first drive
of the second half, but Matt Wogan missed a 32-yard
field goal. Oregon recovered a fumble by Washington
States Jamal Morrow on its own 35. On fourth-and-10,
Mariota ran for 28 yards to the 8-yard line. On the next
play he threw a touchdown pass to Pharaoh Brown
for a 28-21 lead with 4:32 left in the third. WSU replied
with an 87-yard drive that ended with Quentin Breshears 30-yard field goal to pull to 28-24 early in the
fourth. However, Oregon marched down to the WSU
17, where Wogan kicked a 34-yard field goal to extend
the lead to 31-24 with 11:04 left. Halliday then led the
Cougars on a 75-yard drive, with a 54-yard pass to
Morrow covering most of the distance. River Cracraft
caught a 5-yard touchdown pass in the end zone to tie
the score at 31-31 with 8:57 to go. Oregon came right
back with a 79-yard drive in nine plays, with Mariota
passing to Lowe for a 6-yard touchdown pass and a
38-31 lead with 5:33 left. The Cougars werent done, as
Hallidays 34-yard pass to Vince Mayle brought WSU
to the Oregon 35. But Washington State stalled and
turned the ball over on downs with 3:34 left. Washington State scored first, taking possession at its own 44
after Oregon punted on its first possession. Halliday
threw completions on all five plays and hit Dom Williams in the back of the end zone for an 18-yard touchdown pass and a 7-0 lead midway through the first
quarter. Oregon punted again and the Cougars drove
to the Ducks 11. The Cougars had a chance to extend
the lead but Breshears hit the left upright on a 29-yard
field goal. Oregon took over on its 20 and Mariota connected with Allen at midfield on the first play, and Allen outran the efense for an 80-yard touchdown play
that tied the score. Washington State regained the
lead on its next possession as Halliday hit Dom Williams in the end zone with an 8-yard scoring pass on
4th and 2. Halliday threw for 167 yards in the first quarter. Mariota threw a 57-yard touchdown pass to Lowe
to tie the score at 14-all early in the second quarter.
After the Cougars turned the ball over on downs at the
Oregon 31 on their next possession, Mariota ran for 41
yards on the Ducks first play. He later threw a 13-yard
touchdown pass to a wide-open Allen in the end zone
to give Oregon its first lead at 21-14 with just under 9
minutes left in the first half. Washington State replied
with a 14-play drive that covered 74 yards, with Halliday passing connecting with Rickey Galvin on a 6-yard
pass to tie the score at 21-all with 2:47 left in the half.

LAST YEARS MEETING IN EUGENE

Oct. 10, 2015
Washington State def. Oregon, 45-38 (2OT)
EUGENE, Ore. Luke Falk threw for season-high 505
yards and five touchdowns, including an unusual
scoring pass in the second overtime, and Washington
State snapped an eight-game losing streak to Oregon
with a 45-38 victory in overtime over the Ducks. Knotted at 38, an unnecessary roughness foul on the Ducks
helped the Cougars in the second OT, and then Falk
appeared to hit River Cracraft with a pass that landed
in the hands of Robert Lewis for a 4-yard touchdown.
The play withstood review, and Oregons subsequent
drive ended in an interception - sending the Cougars
rushing onto the field in celebration. Falk had marched
Washington State downfield in the final two minutes
of regulation, capping the drive with an 8-yard pass
to tie the game at 31 and send it to overtime. Jeff
Lockie hit Bralon Addison with a 9-yard touchdown
pass for the Ducks (3-3, 1-2) on the opening possession of the extra period. The Cougars answered with
Falks close 1-yard keeper that withstood a review
that again tied the score. Royce Freeman ran for a
career-high 246 yards and two touchdowns, and also
caught a TD pass, for Oregon. Vernon Adams Jr., who
was named Oregons starter just prior to the beginning
of the season, broke the index finger on his throwing
hand in the Ducks opener against his former team,
Eastern Washington. A standout for the Eagles for
the last three seasons, Adams transferred to Oregon
for his year of eligibility. In his place, both Lockie and
Taylor Alie have rotated. Lockie shouldered most of
the load, throwing for 123 yards and two touchdowns.
Both QBs leaned on Freeman, just as they had in last
weeks 41-24 victory at Colorado when he ran for 163
yards and two scores. Freeman ran for 135 yards and
a touchdown against Washington State in the first half
alone. Falk threw a 7-yard touchdown pass to Gabe
Marks on Washington States first series of the game.
Marks has been seeing a lot of action in coach Mike
Leachs offense, going into the game with an average
of 91 yards receiving per game, and leading the Pac-12
with an average of 8.3 catches per game. He finished
with eight catches for 111 yards against the Ducks. Oregon was ranked 114th in the nation for passing yards
allowed going into the game, allowing an average of
287.2 yards a game. But the Ducks attempted to switch
things up against the Cougars, playing wide receiver
Charles Nelson at safety at times. It was the sophomores first career appearance on defense, although
he played at safety during the Spring Game. Nelson
also played at receiver and on special teams during
the game. Oregons initial drive ended with a 26-yard
field goal from Aidan Schneider. Oregon switched to
Alie midway through its second series, and he ran 8
yards for a touchdown to give Oregon a 9-3 lead. After
Freemans 2-yard touchdown run, Falk hit Marks again
with a 4-yard scoring pass just before the break to cut
Oregons margin to 17-14 at halftime. Falk gave the
Cougars a 21-17 lead early in the third quarter with a
27-yard touchdown pass to Tavares Martin. But Freeman caught a 17-year scoring pass from Lockie that
put the Ducks back in front 24-21. He added a 1-yard
scoring run early in the fourth quarter. Erik Powell added a 22-yard field goal for the Cougars before Falks
game-tying drive. Oregon wore a gray theme uniform
paying tribute to the state of Oregon, which featured
an image of explorers Lewis and Clark - along with the
Duck - on the helmet.

GAME RECAPS
EASTERN WASHINGTON VS. WASHINGTON STATE

WASHINGTON STATE AT BOISE STATE

Sept. 3, 2016 Martin Stadium Att.: 32,952 TV: Pac-12 Networks

Sept. 11, 2016 Albertsons Stadium Att.: 36,163 TV: ESPN2

PULLMAN, Wash. Gage Gubrud threw for 474 yards and five touchdowns as FCS Eastern Washington upset Washington State 45-42 in the season opener for both teams. Washington State, which lost to Portland State of the Football Championship Subdivision in its opening game last year, could not stop the Eastern Washington offense, which
produced 610 yards. Eastern Washington, which came in as three-touchdown underdogs, also upset Oregon State of
the Pac-12 three years ago. Gubrud, making his first start, completed 34 of 40 passes and was intercepted once. He
also ran for a touchdown to ice the game. Cooper Kupp, last years FCS offensive player of the year, caught 12 passes
for 206 yards and three touchdowns. His two touchdown receptions in the third quarter put EWU ahead for good.
In the first half, the teams combined to score touchdowns on seven consecutive possessions. The streak started
when Luke Falk threw a 53-yard touchdown pass to Gabe Marks and the Cougars led 7-0 midway through the first
quarter. Eastern Washington replied with Gubruds 14-yard touchdown pass to Antoine Custer Jr., to tie the game
at 7-7. Washington State came right back with a 58-yard drive, capped by Falks 27-yard scoring pass to Kyle Sweet
for a 14-7 lead. Eastern Washington replied with another touchdown, this time on a 6-yard pass from Gubrud to Sam
McPherson. On this 75-yard drive, Kupp caught one pass for 11 yards, rushed the ball once for 14 yards and threw a
22-yard pass. Washington State came right back, scoring on a 2-yard pass from Falk to Marks. Eastern Washington
tied the game at 21-21 when, on the first play of its subsequent possession, Kupp caught a 75-yard touchdown pass
from Gubrud. Jamal Morrows 5-yard touchdown run put the Cougars ahead 28-21, and ended the scoring streak
as EWU punted on its next possession. But Eastern Washingtons Mitch Fettig intercepted a Falk pass, and Jordan
Dascalo kicked a 48-yard field goal as time expired to cut Washington States lead to 28-24 at halftime. Kupp caught
a 26-yard touchdown pass from Gubrud on the opening drive of the second half to put the Eagles ahead 31-28. That
gave him 58 career touchdown passes, tying the FCS record set by David Ball of New Hampshire. He broke the record
on EWUs next drive, with a one-handed catch of Gubruds 7-yard pass in the end zone, giving the Eagles a 38-28 lead.
Marcellus Pippins intercepted Gubrud in the end zone to end another EWU scoring threat. Erik Powell missed a 38yard field goal attempt for Washington State midway through the fourth. Gerard Wicks caught a 9-yard touchdown
pass from Falk with 4:42 left in the game for Washington States first points of the second half, cutting EWUs lead to
38-35. But Eastern Washington marched down the field, with Gubrud scoring on a 30-yard bootleg with 1:39 left for
a 45-35 lead. Wicks scored on a 3-yard touchdown run for Washington State with 14 seconds left. Their on-side kick
attempt was recovered by the Eagles.

BOISE, Idaho Jeremy McNichols rushed for 116 yards and two touchdowns, Tyler Horton returned his first career
interception 85 yards for a touchdown and Boise State held on in the fourth quarter for a 31-28 win over Washington
State. Brett Rypien threw for 299 yards, including a 47-yard touchdown to Thomas Sperbeck, but was intercepted
twice in the fourth quarter, giving Washington State chances until the final play when Luke Falks desperation heave
was batted down. Boise State (2-0) won its 34th straight regular season non-conference home game, knocking off the
last out of conference team to win on The Blue. Falk was 55-of-71 passing for 480 yards and four touchdowns, but
it took three quarters before he could beat the Broncos throwing downfield, hitting Tavares Martin Jr. on a 50-yard
TD late in the third quarter that pulled the Cougars within 24-14. Rypien quickly answered, completing three straight
passes for 68 yards before McNichols second touchdown run pushed the Broncos lead 31-14 on the first play of the
fourth quarter. That proved to be enough barely. Falk rallied in the fourth quarter, throwing touchdown passes
of 14 yards on fourth down to Jamal Morrow and hitting Gabe Marks on a 33-yard TD with 4:17 left right after
Rypien was intercepted to pull within 31-28. Washington State got the ball back with a minute remaining after poor
clock management by the Broncos, but the Cougars had their own problems with the clock and settled for Falks final
throw that fell short. Leach ripped into his teams toughness after the loss, saying the Cougars outplayed Boise State
in every other category. Washington State (0-2) was trying to match what it did in 2001 when the Cougars won 41-20
in Boise and rebound from being stunned by FCS power Eastern Washington in last weeks opener. But the Cougars
got off to an awful start with Falk getting intercepted on their opening drive deep in Boise State territory and watching
Horton manage to stay inbound and sprint 85 yards to give the Broncos the early lead. It was the first of six drives
by the Cougars that reached Boise State territory and failed to end in points. The Cougars had a field goal attempt
blocked, punted twice and turned the ball over on downs twice inside the Broncos half of the field, the last coming
when Morrow was stuffed on fourth-and-1 at the 46 with 5:12 remaining.

GAME RECAPS
IDAHO VS. WASHINGTON STATE

Sept. 17, 2016 Martin Stadium Att.: 28,477 TV: Pac-12 Networks
PULLMAN, Wash. The mind of Marcellus Pippins of Washington State was racing as he saw the loose football on
the turf at Martin Stadium. He bent down and scooped the ball up, and one thought ran through his brain. He gave no
thought to diving on the football, running 72 yards for the score that helped ignite Washington States 56-6 win over
Idaho on Saturday. Luke Falk threw for 226 yards and three touchdowns as Washington State posted a positive end to
a tumultuous week. James Williams rushed for 126 yards and a touchdown for Washington State (1-2), which won on
a wet, windy day when the Air Raid offense was not working very well. Idaho (1-2) struggled for the second straight
week against a Pac-12 team, after losing at No. 8 Washington. The Vandals have not scored a touchdown against
Washington State the past two times the teams have played. Austin Rehkow kicked a 42-yard field goal as Idaho took
a 3-0 lead on its first possession. Williams ran over from the 2 for a 7-3 lead for the Cougars. The touchdown was set
up by a 50-yard completion from Falk to Kyle Sweet. Nose tackle Robert Barber blocked a 32-yard field-goal attempt
by Rehkow and Pippins scooped up the ball and ran 72 yards for a touchdown as Washington State took a 14-3 lead
midway through the second quarter. Idaho quarterback Matt Linehan fumbled on a bootleg, and Robert Taylor recovered for Washington State on Idahos 36. Falk threw an 8-yard touchdown pass to Gabe Marks as Washington State
built a 21-3 lead late in the second quarter. Idaho drove all the way to the WSU 1 midway through the third quarter,
but had to settle for Rehkows 18-yard field goal that cut the Cougars lead to 21-6. Washington State replied with a
90-yard drive that ended on Wicks 2-yard scoring run for a 28-6 lead. Falk threw a 10-yard touchdown pass to Robert
Lewis early in the fourth for a 35-6 lead, and the Cougars added three more touchdowns in the fourth. Leach said his
players seemed to respond well to a week of hard practices and harsh criticism. Idaho coach Paul Petrino did not
appear in the postgame interview room. Leachs Air Raid pass attack got a bit of a rest, as the Cougars piled up 228
rushing yards and three rushing touchdowns.

Mike
LEACH
Head Coach
5th Year

Mike Leach, the 2015 Pac-12 Co-Coach of the Year, begins his fifth season leading
the Washington State Cougar football program after being named the Cougars
head football coach, Nov. 30, 2011. Leach has guided the Cougars to two bowl
appearances in his first four years, a first for a WSU head coach.
In 2015 the Cougars ended the season with a 9-4 record, 6-3 in the Pac-12
Conference, capped by a 20-14 Sun Bowl victory over Miami. After starting the
season 2-2, the Cougars went 7-2 over the final nine games, posting last-minute
victories at Oregon and No. 18 UCLA, and rallying from a fourth-quarter deficit in
a 38-24 victory against Arizona State. For the second-straight season WSU led the
nation in passing at 389.5 ypg, while also finishing second in the nation in red zone
offense, converting 94.5 percent of their opportunities inside the 20-yard line. WSU
concluded the regular season by having 11 student-athletes named to All-Pac-12
teams and five to Pac-12 All-Academic teams. Senior offensive lineman Joe Dahl
earned Second-Team All-America honors and was later drafted by Detroit in the
fifth round of the 2016 NFL Draft. Defensive lineman Hercules Mataafa garnered
First-Team Freshman All-American honors by USA Today.
In 2014 Leachs offense led the nation in passing at 477.7 yards per game, the
second-highest total in FBS history, trailing only Houstons 511.3 in 1989. WSU
set or tied 42 school, conference or NCAA records during the season, including
quarterback Connor Halliday who threw for an NCAA single-game record 734 yards
against California. WSU also placed five student-athletes on Pac-12 All-Academic
teams and five on All-Pac-12 teams during the season.
In 2013, Leachs second season at the helm of the Cougars, he guided Washington
State to the Gildan New Mexico Bowl, the first bowl game for the Cougars in a
decade. Last season the Cougars ranked fourth in the nation in passing offense,
setting a school-record at 368.00 yards per game, eclipsing the previous mark of
343.3 ypg in 1997. The Cougar offense threw for more than 400 yards five times,
including a 2013 NCAA FBSbest 557 yards at Oregon. Quarterback Connor Halliday
set WSU single-season records for passing yards (4,587), attempts (714) and
completions (449), the first WSU quarterback to surpass the 4,000-yard mark. The
Cougars picked up more national recognition as safety Deone Bucannon became
WSUs first All-America first-team selection since 2005 and was later selected as
the No. 27 overall pick in NFL Draft by the Arizona Cardinals, the first Cougar taken in
the first round since 2003. The Cougars also placed eight student-athletes on Pac-12
All-Academic teams during the season.
In his first season in Pullman, Leachs high-powered offense led the Pac-12
Conference in passing, averaging 330.42 yards per game. That figure ranked ninth
nationally and marked the second-highest average in school history. Academically,
nine Cougars received Pac-12 All-Academic honors while the 2012 fall semester
football GPA of 2.66 marked the first time the football team had been over a 2.60 GPA
for fall semester.
Leach brought a proven record of winning to Pullman. In 10 seasons as a head
coach, all at Texas Tech (2000-09) his program earned 10 bowl bids. In addition, the
Susanville, Calif., native who was raised in Cody, Wyo., recorded a school-record 84
victories during his tenure.
Leading the most prolific passing offense in the country, Leach received three
national coach of the year awards in 2008 - the Woody Hayes Award, Howie Long/
Fieldturf Coach of the Year, and George Munger Award. His offense spreads the
field with his exciting brand of football and guided Texas Tech to six NCAA passing
titles and three total offense titles during his 10 seasons in Lubbock. Leachs offense
produced school records in nearly every passing category in 2000, his first season
with the Red Raiders, but surpassed those numbers in each of his next nine seasons.
During Leachs time in Lubbock, Texas, the Red Raiders increased their yards
per game by more than 150 and averaged nearly 20 points more per outing. In the
passing game, Texas Tech threw for about 300 yards more per game in the decade
Leach was at the helm.

Leach led Texas Tech to one of the most memorable seasons in school
history in 2008 as the team set a program record with 11 regular-season
wins en route to an 11-2 record. The win total tied the mark, set previously
by the 1953 and 1973 Red Raider squads. Numerous accolades poured in
from across the country as an unprecedented four players earned firstteam All-America status, in addition to Leachs three coach of the year
honors. Quarterback Graham Harrell, offensive tackle Rylan Reed and
offensive guard Brandon Carter each garnered first-team honors, while
wide receiver Michael Crabtree was honored as a unanimous All-American
for the second-straight season.
On the field in 2008, the Red Raiders led the nation in passing for the
sixth time in Leachs ten seasons and ranked among the top five in total
offense. Harrell finished his storied career second on the NCAA career
passing yardage list with 15,793 yards. Harrell also broke the career NCAA
passing touchdowns mark with 134.
The Texas Tech program has established itself as one of the nations
leading producers of productive quarterbacks since the 2000 season.
Harrell threw for 4,555 yards in his debut as the starter in 2006 and became
the sixth player and third Red Raider in NCAA history to throw for 5,000
yards in a season with his 5,705-yard effort in 2007 and 5,111 yards last
season. He also is the third quarterback under Leach to win nine games in
a season and the first Red Raider in history to win 11 in a regular season.
Former quarterback Kliff Kingsbury in 2002 and Cody Hodges in 2005 each
posted nine-win seasons during their careers, while 2003 and 2004 signal
callers B.J. Symons and Sonny Cumbie each won eight games in their
respective seasons as the starter.
The running game flourished under Leach as well. Former Red Raider
Taurean Henderson holds the NCAA career record for receptions by a
running back. The Red Raiders 28 total rushing scores in 2008 were the
most for a Tech team since the 1993 team scored 30. Despite Techs offense
revolving around the pass, Leach did a tremendous job of incorporating the
running back position into the mix. Henderson finished his career with 303
receptions, which ranks first in NCAA history among running backs and
fourth overall.
Leach has coached several players who have gone on to the NFL. While
at Tech, 18 players have been drafted and 21 others have signed free agent
contracts. In the spring of 2009, four players were selected among the first
four rounds of the NFL Draft, marking the most successful draft for Texas
Tech in the Leach era.
Safety Darcel McBath was selected by the Denver Broncos in the

U.S. SPORTS ACADEMY, 88

PEPPERDINE, 86
BYU, 83

second round, while offensive lineman Louis Vasquez was taken in the
third by San Diego. Defensive end Brandon Williams went to the Dallas
Cowboys in the fourth.
The program made strides academically as well under Leach. During his
10 years, Tech was recognized as one of the nations top institutions for
consistently being above a 70 percent graduation rate, according to the
American Football Coaches Association.
Prior to coming on board at Texas Tech, Leach, in just one season at
Oklahoma, directed a Sooner offense that went from one of the worst in the
Big 12 Conference to one of the best. Leach guided an Oklahoma offense
that went from 11th in the Big 12 in 1998 to first in 1999 and 101st in the
nation to 11th. In just one year, OUs total offense numbers improved from
293.3 to 427.2 yards per game. Under Leach, the Oklahoma offense set six
Big 12 Conference and 17 OU records.
Prior to joining Bob Stoops Oklahoma staff, Leach served as offensive
coordinator for Hal Mumme at the University of Kentucky and Valdosta
(Ga.) State University. Under Mumme and Leach, the Kentucky offense set
six NCAA records, 41 Southeastern Conference records and 116 school
records in 22 games.
Named 1996 Division II Offensive Coordinator of the Year by American
Football Quarterly magazine, Leach helped Mumme lead Valdosta State to
a 40-17-1 record. The 1993 Blazer offense smashed 66 school records, 22
conference records and seven national records. In 1994, Valdosta State
advanced to the Division II playoffs with Leachs offense shattering 80
school records, 35 conference records and seven more national marks.
Leach and Mumme first teamed up at Iowa Wesleyan College in 1989.
From 1989 to 1991 Leach served as offensive coordinator and line coach for
an offense that led the NAIA in passing yardage one season and finished
second the other two. Iowa Wesleyan quarterbacks passed for more than
11,000 yards in Leachs three seasons and broke 26 national records.
Leach also has made coaching stops in Pori, Finland, where he served as
a head coach in the European Football League (1989), as well as one-year
stints at College of the Desert (1988) and Cal Poly-San Luis Obispo (1987).
After graduating with honors from BYU in 1983, Leach earned a masters
degree from the U.S. Sports Academy and his law degree from Pepperdine
University, where he graduated in the top one-third of his class.
The oldest of six siblings, Leach and his wife, Sharon, are the parents of
four children; Janeen, Kim, Cody and Kiersten.
