Masaaki Suzuki
playing the Schnitger/ Hinz organ in the
Martinikerk (Martins Church), Groningen
to Bachs work should not only study the composition, but examine the underlying
strophes as well. It will then be found to mention just one obvious example that
a lively tempo would be quite inappropriate to partita 6, with a corresponding strophe
about reaching an old age through many bitter stages.
Fantasia (Pice dOrgue) in G major, BWV 572
The autograph of BWV 572 has not survived. This piece has become known to a
large audience as Fantasia in G major. The designation Pice dOrgue is, however,
more in accordance with the sources. It is supposed that Bach composed it after
having studied French keyboard music; this is suggested by the description Piece
dOrgue 5. avec la Pedalle continu [] (found in an anonymous copy, P 1092), by
the headings of the three sections Trs vitement, Gravement, and Lentement,
and by the indication tournez. That Bach indeed studied French music is confirmed,
for example, by the fact that he made a copy of Nicolas de Grignys Livre dOrgue.
There is an early copy of BWV 572, by Johann Gottfried Walther, presumably made
shortly after 1712. In this the central movement is not headed Gravement but
Gayement. This could be a clerical error, but there are other manuscripts which
read Allegro at this place. A special feature of the majestic central movement is the
B contra in bar 94, a note that could be played on French organs in Bachs days. It
would seem to be legitimate but by no means mandatory to perform this piece
with registrations in the French way (i.e. Plein Jeu for the framing movements,
Grand Jeu for the central movement).
Prelude and Fugue in G minor, BWV 535
It is likely that Bachs Prelude and Fugue in G minor, BWV 535, is a juvenile work,
written in Arnstadt or even earlier (i.e. before 1703). This can be concluded from,
among other things, North German influences to be found in the prelude. The theme
of the fugue, in turn, especially its semiquaver motifs, is reminiscent of Bachs key5
board version BWV 965 of Johann Adam Reinckens Sonata prima (from the collection entitled Hortus musicus). The pair has been handed down to us only in copies;
there is a possibility that Bach himself copied a few bars in one later Leipzig manuscript (Lpz MB III.8.7). The beginning of the prelude is characterised by passaggio
lines over a pedal point. The prelude is linked thematically with the fugue: the pedal
part of the prelude in bars 10 11 is melodically identical with the beginning of the
fugue subject. The solo passage in the top voice near the end of the fugue is vaguely
reminiscent of a similar moment preceding the final bars of the Prelude in F minor,
BWV 534/1.
Canonic Variations on Vom Himmel hoch da komm ich her, BWV 769
It was probably during the second half of 1747 that a work appeared in print entitled
komm ich her. vor die Orgel mit 2. Clavieren und dem Pedal von Johann Sebastian
Bach []. The occasion for its composition is generally thought to be Bachs joining
the Correspondirende Societt der Musikalischen Wissenschaften in the same year.
This society, founded by Bachs pupil Lorenz Christoph Mizler in 1738, was profoundly interested in the philosophical background to music. The Canonic Variations
are of extraordinary quality. Canon techniques of the utmost complexity are applied
in a seemingly effortless way that shows a perfect mastery of the craft. Moreover Bach
has obviously managed to keep up a continuous relation between the music and its
underlying text.2 The composition has been handed down both in print (BWV 769)
and in autograph (BWV 769a), the sequence of the five movements, designated by
Bach as variations, differing between the two. In the engraved edition, the variation
with the four cantus firmus (chorale melody) canons appear as final movement; in
the autograph it is in the middle as the third movement. The engraved version this
is the version recorded here displays not only contrapuntal and dynamic intensification, but also a parallelism in the structure of the canons.

Born in Kobe, Masaaki Suzuki began working as a church organist at the age of
twelve. He studied the organ under Tsuguo Hirono at the Tokyo University of the
Arts, going on to the Sweelinck Academy in Amsterdam in 1979. There he studied
the harpsichord under Ton Koopman and the organ under Piet Kee, graduating with
a soloists diploma in both instruments. In 1990 Masaaki Suzuki founded the Bach
Collegium Japan, with which he embarked on a series of recordings of J. S. Bachs
cantatas. His impressive discography on the BIS label has brought him many critical
plaudits, and he is regularly invited to work with renowned period ensembles such
as the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment and Philharmonia Baroque. Masaaki
Suzuki also conducts modern orchestras, including the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra, New York Philharmonic, Orchestre Symphonique de Montral and Tokyo
Philharmonic Orchestra, in repertoire as diverse as Britten, Faur, Haydn, Mahler,
Mendelssohn, Mozart and Stravinsky.
Masaaki Suzuki combines his conducting career with his work as an organist and
harpsichordist. His recordings of Bachs music for solo keyboard have won great
acclaim, for instance a recommendation in Gramophone for the second book of the
Well-Tempered Clavier: Suzukis heartfelt synthesis of scholarship and musicality
will provide repeated listening pleasures in one of the finest harpsichord recordings
of Book 2 available. On the organ he has previously released Bachs German Organ
Mass and discs of works by Sweelinck and Buxtehude.
Founder of the early music department at the Tokyo University of the Arts,
Masaaki Suzuki taught there until 2010, and is currently visiting professor at the Yale
Institute of Sacred Music. In 2001 he was awarded the Cross of the Order of Merit
of the Federal Republic of Germany, and in 2012 he received the Bach Medal,
awarded by the city of Leipzig.

Pice dOrgue (Fantasia) G-Dur BWV 572
Man
Stze seit jeher zusammengehren.

Lappellation Pice
Johann Gottfried Walther prsumment peu aprs 1712.

The music on BISs Hybrid SACDs can be played back in Stereo (CD and SACD) as well as in 5.0 Surround sound (SACD).
Our surround sound recordings aim to reproduce the natural sound in a concert venue as faithfully as possible, using the
newest technology. In order to do so, all five channels are recorded using the full frequency range, with no separate bass
channel added: a so-called 5.0 configuration. If your sub-woofer is switched on, however, most systems will also automatically feed the bass signal coming from the other channels into it. In the case of systems with limited bass reproduction,
this may be of benefit to your listening experience.
