charged with conspiracy to defeat the
government , so he was sentenced to life
imprisonment . Mandela was imprisoned for
27 years.

He was the first black president of his country

in the period 1994 to 1999 at 76 years, his
government set about dismantling the social
and political structure inherited from the
aparthei through the combat institutionalized

racism , poverty , social inequality and

promoting social reconcilacin .

Retired from politics in 1999 he was devoted

to charity and to combat the AIDS pandemic
through its Foundation Nelson Mandela (1999

In 2004 at the age of 85 years and a frail

Mandela announced his retirement from

days and his funeral was held at the SoccerCity Stadium in Johannesburg.
