Conference report - focus on young learners

ELT Ireland's second annual conference
The Dublin City University campus provided a suitably
academic venue for ELT Irelands annual conference (20th
- 21st February), this year focussing on support for
teachers working with Young Learners (YL). Delegates
were able to attend opening and closing plenary sessions
as well as choosing from a good selection of optional
sessions.
The conference started with Marie Delaneys talk on managing young learner
behaviour. Recognising that much problem behaviour is a result of students
lives outside the classroom, Marys talk gave some really practical suggestions
about how to work with students to manage issues rather than exacerbate
them through confrontation.
At the close of the day, Sue Palmers insightful plenary was about Very Young
Learner (VYL) pedagogy and the need to focus on interpersonal skills for
children under the age of seven, rather than approaches to testing and
assessment more common with teenagers and adults. Sues website also gives
an account of many of the issues effecting VYL teachers and recommends
reading to help teachers working with this age group.
Another conference highlight was Shay Coynes research-based talk on
aligning parents, students and centre managers goals for YL courses. Read
her latest journal article on YL pedagogy to get a flavour of her helpful,
practice-based research.
Trinity TESOLs Ben Beaumont also spoke on the importance of laying the
foundations for research in both pre- and in-service teacher education
qualifications, like the Teaching Young Learners Extension Certificate. Full
details of Trinitys portfolio of research-based teaching qualifications can be
found at trinitycollege.com/TESOL.
