Title: What are the processes that led to the formation the landforms found in the

upper, middle and lower courses of the Morant/Negro Rivers found in Saint
Thomas, Jamaica?

Name: Craig Burey Jr.

Candidate Number: 100057___
School Code: 100057
Date; March 15, 2016

Aim of Study:
To identify and describe the landforms found in the upper, middle and lower courses of the afore
stated river.
To classify and describe the landforms found in the upper, middle and lower courses of the afore
mentioned river.

Methodology:

On January 26, 2015 between 09:00 and 18:00 at the Morant/Negro River located in
Saint Thomas, Jamaica a field study was conducted.
On this field study a number of measurements were taken using the following methods.
To find the velocity of the river a measuring tape was used to measure a distance of 10 meters in
a straight section the river. The distance was marked using a pole at each end. A stopwatch was
used to time how long it took a float to travel distance. This was repeated 6 times and the average
was found. Then the velocity was found using the formula distance divided by time.
A measuring tape was also used to measure the width of the channel in each course. The
tape was stretched across the channel to get the width. The depth of the east and west banks and
the middle of the channel was measured using a meter rule and a pole. The pole was placed in
the water and the water mark was measured.
In each course thirty sediments were randomly selected in a 10 meters radius was
selected and the measurement of the longest side of each sediment was measured using either a
ruler or the measuring tape. A brief description was given of each and they were classified using
the Wenworth Table of Sediment Classification.
The features of the river were observed/identified. A brief description was given of each.
Some were measured. Photographs and sketch diagrams were taken.
Secondary data was taken from textbooks and atlases.
