the primary and secondary directions in relation to a certain
point of reference, compass, mock-up of eggs, puzzled maps
costume hats, flags for the groups and activity sheets.
D. Concept: Directions like north, south, east, and west are
called primary directions. Directions like
northeast, southwest, northwest and southeast
are called secondary directions.
E. Methodology: Inductive Method
F. Strategy: Cooperative Learning

III. Procedure
A. Pre activities
Class, lets first sing our Math
Jingle altogether!
1. Drill
Class, kindly look at your
chairs, I have posted some
strips of papers on it
containing places. If you got
one kindly stand! (then the
teacher will show the map of

the Philippines and that is for

pupils to point out where
those places are located using
strings and pins).

2. Motivation
Class, who among you here
had already played the very
famous game Angry Birds
from the computer?
Have you enjoyed playing this
game?

Yes Sir!
(different answers)

What made you enjoyed the

game?

Class, let me ask you? Do you

know the story behind that
game Angry Birds?

Okay, for us to understand

the story, here is a
presentation(role playing to be
presented by some selected
pupils) of what the story all
about. But before we start, what
are the standards or rules to
follow in listening a story and
observing a presentation?

(varied answers)

Sir, listen attentively to

the teacher
- Set properly
- Do not do anything not
related to the lesson and etc.

Very Good! So you should follow

those standards!
(the teacher will tell the story as
the role playing is being
presented were pupils can
visualize what the story all about
giving emphasis of the use of
compass and the map as the
spring board of the lesson)
(PLACES: Chocolate hills,
Borongan, and Metro Manila).
(selected pupils should be able to
point out the places from the map
using strings and pins).

Heres the story:

(some selected pupils will
perform the presentation-role playing
giving focus of the use of compass and
the map)

Once upon a time, their lived a friendly

birds in the city named:

the red bird- red eagle/mother

bird

the blue bird- puppy

the yellow bird-scanler

the black bird-sarge

the white bird-heroine

and to make the story short, the
mother birds eggs are stolen by
the green pigs so the birds are
angry now and want to take
revenge by destroying the pigs in
their fortified castles and for
mother bird to find her eggs.
Mother bird decided to use
gadgets from the castle city which
is called the Egg Compass and
the Egg Map, so she is very
much lucky that she has the egg
compass and the egg map that
will help her to find her eggs that
were stolen by the green pigs but
until now she and her friends
wasnt able to find her eggs yet.

B. Developmental Activities
1. Presentation
Class, who are again the
characters in the story?
Very good!

Who had stolen mother birds

egg?
Thats right!

Class, based on the story

(presentation), what object did mother
bird use in finding her eggs?

Sir, mother bird uses the compass and

the map in finding her eggs!

Yes thats right!

Now class, where do we use that
compass? What is it for?
(the teacher will show the Compass/real
object)

Sir, we use compass to locate directions

and we use map in finding places!

Very good! What a brilliant idea!

Class, the story that we had about
angry birds, this compass, this map has
something to do with our lesson for
today. And today we are going to discuss
all about Locating the position of places
using primary and secondary directions
in relation to a certain point of
reference
Okay class, let us read altogether
our lesson for today!

(pupils will read altogether the lesson:

Locating the position of places using
primary and secondary directions in
relation to a certain point of reference

2. Discussion and Analysis

Class, you have said a while ago
that this compass is used to locate
directions isnt it?
Sir, the characters in the story are
Mother bird, Puppy, Scanler, Sarge,
Heroine and the Green pigs!
Sir, the green pigs had stolen mother
birds egg!

And that is right, now everybody

take a look at the compass, what can you
see on the compass?
Very Good! What else?

Yes, thats right! So what are the

letters?

Sir, we have letters , N, E, S, and W!

Very Good!
Class, what do you think these 4
letters stands for? (the pupils will
generate ideas based on their
background knowledge/experience)

Sir, letter N stands for North, letter E

stands for East, letter W stands for West
and S stands for South!

Very Good! What a brilliant idea!

Class, what word can you form
from these letters?

Sir, NEWS!

Your correct!

Class, do you know that this word

NEWS that give us information come
from these letters or it was originated
here in these directions?
And in ancient time, the early
man dont have yet the compass or
gadgets that tells or give information on
direction and timewhat they are using
is on the movement of the sun and stars
that tells them what is the time, date and
where to go.
So class, what do we call these
North, East, West and South?
Very Good! They are directions
and we called them primary directions.

Sir, they are directions!

Now, look at this compass, what

letters are added?

Yes Sir!

Very Good!
Are they also directions class?
Thats right!

Sir their is an arrow on the compass!

Sir, there are 4 letters on the compass!

What do you think these two

letters stands for? Lets starts first with
NE (NORTHEAST)and so on.

And we called them Secondary

Directions!
Everybody read:
Northeast, Northwest, Southeast
and Southwest!
Class, as we go on with our
discussion we will able to know why do
we call them secondary directions.
Now class, everybody look at this
diagram! (from the computer) what is
this diagram?

Study the Community Map.

Sir, we have NE, SE, NW, SW!

Yes! Thats right!
Yes Sir!
Now, study the community map!
(the pupils will give the answers)

Class, where is the park

located/what is the center of the
community?

Very Good! The park is the

center of the community and we call it
the point of reference!
Say it again class! the park is the
point of reference!

Sir, at the center! (the park)

(pupils will response)

Now, lets have a short exercise!

Lets try to answer the following
questions:
1. Where is the park?
2. Where is the municipal building?
3. What is the center of the
community?
4. Where do you find the school?
5. Where do you find the public
library?
6. What do you find at the northeast
corner?
7. What do you find at the
southwest corner?
8. Where is the house located?
9. From my house, if I want to
practice at the dance studio,
where will I go?

(the pupils will answer the

questions)

Very Good! All your answers are correct!

Everybody lets do the Yes Clap!
(afterwards, the teacher will give an
additional information about the topic
and show how to use the compass
properly)

3. Fixing Skills/Guided Practice

Sir, that diagram shows a community
map!

(through a game, Egg Hunting Similar

to the popular game Angry Birds)
Group Activity
Class, a while ago you have known
what was the true story of the game
angry birds and until now mother bird
and her friends werent able yet to find
mother birds eggs. I think we can help
mother bird in finding her eggs and we

will do the Egg Hunting Activity so we

will play the game angry birds, we will
try to help mother bird in finding her
eggs.
But before we start, what are the
standards or rules to follow in
conducting a group activity?

Sir, cooperate!

Very good! So, you should follow those

standards!

-try your best to give an answer or an

idea.

-do not do anything not related to the

activity.

-be responsible

And we also have the rubrics that

will rate your outputs!

(the teacher will divide the class into 4

groups, each group will be given the
hats-a costume hats of the characters
of the angry birds were they are going to
wear it for identification of what group
are they)
Groupings (based on the characters of
angry birds)
Group 1- Scauler Group
Group 2- Sarge Group
Group 3- Puppy Group

Group4- Heroine Group

(Each group will be given their

respective tasks using an activity sheets,
including the incomplete map of the
school campus of ESDPES which the
pupils needs to be completed as how
puzzle map works. There will also be
stations of each activity where clues and
materials are present that will made
their task completed)
the first group to finished, have
the complete puzzle map and
were able to find and bring the
egg inside the room and have the
exact time allotment will be the
winner and received a price from
the teacher!
(Reporting and Analysis
of the Group Outputs)

4. Generalization
Class, based on our discussion
and on the activity that we had, what are
again the primary directions?

Sir, the primary directions are North,

East, South and West!

Very good!

How about the secondary

directions?
Yes, all your answers are correct!

And what is the use of compass?

How about the map?

What an excellent idea!

5. Valuing
Class let me ask you, is it
necessary for us to know and follow the
right directions?

(the pupils should be able

to explain the question very well)

C. Post Activity
1. Application ( through a game)
(INSTRUCTION)
(This is called Mathalino,
Mathinik Game (the same
groupings) Each group will
arrange the given primary and
secondary directions written on a
circle shape colored papers based
on the place identified and from
the diagram shown. The group
who could do it fast and correctly
will be the winner!)

Jared and Joshua decided to harvest

lanzones in the farm to sell it in the market.
They brought with them one big basket for their
harvested lanzones. After three hours, they got
tired and stopped harvesting. They counted the
lanzones that they got.

95 lanzones.Jared and Joshua harvested 95

lanzones.They immediately went home.
However, their brothers and sisters asked for
some lanzones. So, they gave them 48 lanzones
in all.
They started counting.

A Detailed Lesson Plan In

Math- Grade 1
I. Objectives
Through varied activities, the Grade 1
students are expected to do the following with at
least 80% accuracy:
a. subtract numbers using the steps
b. solve problems using the steps
c. subtract two-digit numbers by two-digits
subtrahend with regrouping
II. Subject Matter
Concepts: Subtraction with Regrouping

Strategy: 5 E Approach
III. Learning Procedure
A. Engagement

48 lanzones. Jard and Joshua gave 48 lanzones

to their brothers and sisters.

After counting, Jared and Joshua got tired. They

need some help to find out how many lanzones
were left.
Can we help them?
B. Engagement
How many lanzones were given? (48)
So, how many were left?

95
-48
________
47
So, there are 47 lanzones left
harvested by Jared and Joshua.

C. Explanation
How did you get the answer of how many
lanzones left harvested by Jared and Joshua?
(by subtracting the two numbers)
Let us find out how we subtract it.
How many lanzones did Jared and Joshua
had harvested? How many were given to their
brothers and sisters?
95 -harvested
48 -given
_________________
Let us subtract them following the steps.
We cannot subtract 8 from
5.
95
Regroup one tens from 9
tens.
Add 1 tens and 5
ones.
48
10 + 5 =
15
__________
47
Write 8 in place of 9.
95
Now subtract the ones.
15 - 8 = 7
48
_____________
47
Write 7 under the ones column.
Then subtract the tens.
8-4=4
Write 4 in the tens column.
So, how many lanzones were left? (47)
How did we subtract it? (We subtract it by
regrouping one tens from the tens place. Then,
subtract the ones and the tens place.
Which digit should we always start when we
are going to subtract numbers? (Subtract the
ones-digits first, then the tens. regroup when
needed.)
Ok. I have here another problem.
Last Sunday, my mother bought 52
cupcakes.There were only 16 cupcakes left.How
many cupcake were left?
Let us subtract the cupcakes bought and the
cupcakes left.

52
16
___________
36
How many cupcakes left? (36)
What is the symbol in subtracting numbers? (-)
What is the first step in subtracting numbers
with regrouping? ( Subtract the ones digits first
then the tens place.Regrouping is done by
borrowing 1 ten from the tens digit of the
minuend aqnd adding this to the ones digit of
the minuend.)
D. Elaborate
I have here flashcards. I will give you tag
boards where you will solve the problem and
show your solution. You will raise your tag
boards when I say "GO". I will give you 2
minutes to solve.
