About ICARDA
The International Center for Agricultural Research in the Dry Areas (ICARDA) is an
international autonomous, non-profit, research organization temporarily based in Beirut,
Lebanon supported by the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research
(CGIAR). ICARDA is committed to the improvement of livelihoods of the resource-poor in dry
areas by enhancing food security and alleviating poverty through agricultural research, and

ICARDA is now seeking dynamic and highly-motivated individual to coordinate a significant
research for development project based in Tehran.

About the project


The objective of the project is to improve Irans food and nutrition security by increasing the
production of rain-fed wheat-based systems by 25% within five years in the target area of
the four provinces. The project will target enhancement of production and quality of wheat,
barley, and chickpea in 905,500 ha of East Azerbaijan, Kurdistan, Kermanshah and Lorestan
Provinces. The adoption of readily available technologies to improve the efficiency of input
use, which will increase incomes and improve livelihoods, will also be promoted.

Main purpose of the position


Within the project Increasing the Productivity of Cereal-based Systems to Enhance Food
Security in Iran the Iranian Government and ICARDA are committed to expanding their
collaboration to improve food security and the livelihood of farmers through the transfer of
technologies. The project coordinator will be tasked with the management and overall
implementation of the project. To this effect, the coordinator should establish strong linkages,
proactive collaborations and partnerships with relevant authorities in the country; ensure
effective implementation of all program research and development activities by managing
resources, lead and motivate a team of scientists and technical staff, ensure effective
monitoring and evaluation, data collection and timely reporting.

Main responsibilities
Develop annual work plans and budgets of the project for approval by the Steering
Committee
Oversee the implementation of the project work plan activities, ensuring that they are
delivered according to agreed timelines and budgets, and that they contribute to the
project outputs

Regularly monitor and report on progress towards the achievement of the agreed project
outputs
Ensure that all technical and financial reports for the project are of high quality and
delivered on time
Prepare all technical documents for consideration by the Technical Implementation
Committee
Serve as secretary for the Project Technical Implementation Committee and the Project
Steering Committee
Lead, motivate and manage the performance of all project staff
Coordinate with the National Focal Point and with the Country manager in order to ensure
smooth and effective implementation of the project.

Education, qualifications and experience


A PhD in one or more areas relevant to the work of the program i.e., Agronomist and/or
Plant Breeder/Agroecologist and/or Seed specialist is highly desirable. A Masters degree
is accepted if complemented by very substantive relevant experience.
At least 10 years of international experience in agricultural research /development
leadership positions, with a strong multi-disciplinary, multi-cultural team leadership and
management record.
Extensive knowledge of conservation agriculture issues in dry areas and a proven record
in enabling the adoption of research outputs by farmers.
Individual recognition at international level for significant contribution to an area of
research or development implementation as evidenced by a track record of achievements
and/or strong publications record, including in ISI peer-reviewed journals.
Demonstrated strong project management skills, with the ability to plan and manage the
financial and human resources of large and complex research-for-development projects.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, including the ability to effectively
interact with people at all levels and build consensus in a multi-cultural and multidisciplinary environment.
Excellent verbal and written communications skills in English.
Knowledge of Farsi would be an advantage.

Terms of appointment, salary and benefits


This is an international recruited position. ICARDA offers an attractive remuneration package,
including a competitive salary, housing allowance, contribution towards relocation costs,
home leave provisions, medical and life insurance, and non-contributory retirement plan. The
successful candidate will be appointed on a three-year contract, confirmation of which will be
subject to a probationary period of 12 months. Subject to satisfactory performance the
contract will be renewed by additional two years to cover the full project duration.
Note: Confirmation of appointment will be subject to final approval of the project.
