Each page contains graphs, maps, charts, or other illustrations to depict the figures. Otte Wallish (19031977) was an emigre to Israel who
established himself as a graphic designer and contributed to the symbolic self-representation of the Jewish state. In 1936, Wallish set up a
design studio in a building in Nahalat Binyamin, Tel Aviv, that had been chosen as a national landmark. His design studio doubled as a kind of
front for SHA'I, the Haganah's secret service. Wallish was responsible for the calligraphy and design of the scroll for Israel's Declaration of
Independence. In addition, Walisch handled the preparation of the exhibit hall in which the State's Independence was announced. In 1948,
too, Wallish took the lead in designing Israel's first postage stamps. He chose a design based on ancient coins, found in archaeological research
on the First Jewish-Roman War and the Bar Kochba Revolt. Wallish continued to be a leading designer of Israeli stamps. Israel's first coins
were designed from a proposal submitted by Israel Numismatic Society proposal, put together with Leo Kadman, Hanan Pavel, and Wallish. He
also designed paper currency for Israel. Over the years, Wallish also designed posters. For instance, one poster shows the Jewish immigration
by ship and another promotes the ZIM shipping line. His posters have been featured in exhibition and the 1997 Selling Zionism exhibit at the
Israel Museum. In 2006, a Wallish poster was shown at The New Hebrews: 100 Years of Art in Israel exhibit, Martin-Gropius-Bau in Berlin. His

1905. 'Hanuka 5666', on page [8], is how the printed version appears. Lazarus in her article discusses the year of
massive bloodletting and Jewish martyrs (1905), and celebrates the new heroic Maccabaean Spirit and Jewish
nationalism. Josephine Lazarus (1846-1910) "was the best known of the poet Emma Lazarus's five sisters... Her
first published piece was a memorial essay on Emma, followed by a series of literary biographies of contemporary
women writers. In 1893, she was one of the few Jewish women invited to speak at the Congress of Religions at the
World Columbian Exposition in Chicago. Like the other Jewish speakers at the Congress, Lazarus emphasized the
spiritual identity of Judaism, introducing her vision of combining the truths of Judaism and Christianity in a nonsectarian ethical monotheism.
She further refined her ideology in 'The Spirit of Judaism, ' published in 1895... Lazarus's life and work provide important insights into a pattern
of Jewish identification and assimilation in late nineteenth-century America... Josephine Lazarus's legacy is of a woman yearning for a Judaism
that satisfies both the intellect and the spirit, a Judaism that can connect the past with the present and the future. Josephine Lazarus died on

ON PALESTINE. London; Jewish Agency For Palestine, 1946. Later Wraps. 8vo. 19 pages. 22 cm. First edition.
Testimony before the Anglo-American Committee of Enquiry on Palestine. The Jerusalem hearings no. 1. Dr.
Chaim Weizmann came before the Anglo-American Committee of Inquiry on Palestine today, as it opened
hearings here, and in a calm, at impassioned four-and-a-half hour statement pleaded with them to allow the
building of a Jewish homeland in Palestine. The high points of Dr. Weizmanns testimony, which was frequently
interrupted by questions from the visibly interested committee members, were: 1. Although he favors the
eventual establishment of a Jewish state in Palestine, when the Jews are in a majority, he does not demand the
establishment of such a state immediately, but wants maximum Jewish immigration. 2. He is not interested in the
'trappings' of a Jewish state, but wants state power for Jews to develop the country, and the immediate abolition
of the White paper. 3. He wants peace with the Arabs and is willing to meet with them at any time to discuss the
future of the country. 4. He does not believe that there is any future in Europe for most of that continents Jews. 5.
He revealed that Winston Churchill, when Prime Minister, promised that when the war ended, he would try to
convince the U. S. Government to go along with Zionist aspirations. 6. He is 'profoundly opposed' to violence and would do everything in his
power to curb it. - JTA, 'Weizmann Outlines His Views on Palestine at Hearings of Anglo-american Committee', March 10, 1946. Front wrap in

INDEPENDENCE ISSUE. PROSPECTUS MARCH 28, 1951. New York; American Financial And Development
Corporation For Israel, 1951. Original Wraps. 8vo. 46 pages. 23 cm. First edition. First brochure for the first Israel
Bond Issuance, announcing the amount and bond types available, etc. Contains several charts and graphs
discussing Israel's import/export amounts, public debt, government expenditures, military expenditures, etc. With
one map of Israel. The idea to float bonds issued by Israel's government was conceived by Israel's first prime
minister, David Ben-Gurion, in the aftermath of Israel's War of Independence. The war had taken a terrible toll in
casualties (more than 1% of the country's population was killed), and the nation's fledgling economy was
devastated. Compounding the dire situation was the fact that Israel faced economic demands unique to the new
state, most especially the arrival of hundreds of thousands of immigrants. In Israel's early years, immigrants
generally fell into two categories: Holocaust survivors and Jewish refugees from Arab countries, who poured in
as the British Blockade ended and Middle Eastern Jews fled or were expelled from their home countries. Short on money, the country suffered
food shortages and rationing, and the new arrivals had to be housed in primitive conditions. With his country financially overwhelmed, BenGurion turned to the Diaspora community for help. In September 1950, he convened a meeting of American Jewish leaders at Jerusalem's King
David Hotel, where he proposed issuing bonds to help provide Israel with a more secure economic foundation. Ben-Gurion's goals were twofold: to obtain millions of dollars in funding for immigrant absorption and the construction of national infrastructure, and to engage Diaspora
Jewry as active partners in building the new Jewish state. The American Jewish leaders supported Ben-Gurion's plan and, the following spring,
the prime minister traveled to New York to help launch the inaugural Independence Issue at a gala Madison Square Garden ceremony. Final

dream of an independent State of Israel miraculously came to pass, and one of the first things the settlers did
when they came back to their land was to plant trees and develop moshavim (collective farms). Reforesting the
land by planting trees during Tu B'Shevat eventually became national custom. Today Israeli schoolchildren plant
trees in special ceremonies (neti'at etzim). And people living the Disapora often donate money to plant trees in Israel through the services of the
Jewish National Fund. Tu B'Shevat therefore resembles an 'Israeli Arbor Day' when trees are planted and the rebirth of the Jewish homeland is
celebrated" (John Parsons, 2015). Subjects: Tu bi-Shevat - Study and teaching. Jews - Education - United States. Jews - Education. Tu bi-Shevat Study and teaching. United States. PERIODICALS

148. DER YUD [FULL RUN, VOL. 3, 1901]. Cracow; Hevrah "ahiasaf", 1901. Period Cloth. 4to. [approximately 16
pages per issue]. 30 cm. In Yiddish. Weekly periodical. Contains fifty-two issues. Full run for volume three of Der
Yud: "Yiddish Zionist periodical. Launched by the Hebrew publishing company Ahi'asaf in January 1899 to
promote the political and cultural program of the newly founded Zionist Organization, Der yud (The Jew;
pronounced Der yid) was edited in Warsaw but published in Krakw to avoid tsarist censorship. Under editor
Yehoshu 'a Hana (Yoshue Khone) Ravnitski, it appeared bimonthly, then became a weekly by mid-November of
that year, edited by Yoysef Lurie. The periodical served an appreciative readership in the absence of a Yiddish
daily press and stopped publication in December 1902 when the Russian censor granted long-sought permission
to Saul Ginsburg to start up the Yiddish daily Der fraynd. The editorial policy of providing a place where Yiddish
writers 'could speak not only about, but with the people ' made Der yud a catalyst for the development of modern
Yiddish literature. It featured work by the best-known Yiddish authors, including poems by Shimen Shmuel Frug,
stories by Sholem Aleichem including parts of Tevye der milkhiker (Tevye the Dairyman), neo-Hasidic tales by Y. L.
Peretz, the first Yiddish poems by Hayim Nahman Bialik, and the fictional autobiography of Sholem Yankev Abramovitsh (Mendele MoykherSforim). Despite the outspoken opposition of the leading Hebraist, Ahad Ha-Am, to the development of a modern literature in Yiddish, a
number of Hebrew writers wrote for Der yud, including Mosheh Leib Lilienblum, David Frishman, and Yehudah Steinberg. Der yud also
published the first fruits of young writers who had earlier found no place for their work. One of the few contemporary women writers of fiction,
Rokhl Brokhes, made her debut in Der yud, as did the poet-writer Avrom Reyzen, and the prose writers Sholem Asch and Hersh Dovid Nomberg.
Der yud also published the folk poet Mark Varshavski, the critic Bal-Makhshoves (Isidor Eliashev), the playwright Mark Arnshteyn, and the later
spokesman of Polish Zionism, Yitshak Grnbaum. Normally a tabloid of 16 pages, with holiday supplements, Der yud reported mostly on the
Russian Pale of Settlement, with summaries of world news and reports from Argentina, America, England, and Palestine. Special coverage was
devoted to Zionist congresses and to debates within the Zionist movement. A liberal editorial policy permitted challenges to the paper within its
pages. Correspondents in cities and towns throughout Russia pioneered an early form of Yiddish journalism. Feuilletons and personal columns
often blurred the boundaries between fiction and reportage. The paper tried to strike a balance between belletristic literature and political
commentary. " - YIVO Encyclopedia. Subjects: Jews - Poland - Krakow - Periodicals. Jews. Periodicals. OCLC lists 9 holdings, those may be
