CHAPTER 4: TRIGONOMETRY

Lesson 2

Other pieces of the puzzle that you learned in Math 10-3 were the primary
trigonometry ratios (trig ratios for short). The trig ratios you learned were sine
(sin), cosine (cos), and tangent (tan).
primary trigonometry ratios: a comparison of two of the three sides of a right
triangle; can be called sine, cosine, or tangent
sine: the ratio of the length of the opposite side of an acute angle to the length of
the hypotenuse in a right triangle

cosine: the ratio of the length of the adjacent side of an acute angle to the length of
the hypotenuse in a right triangle

tangent: the ratio of the length of the opposite side of an acute angle to the length
of the adjacent side of the angle in a right triangle

Here are the trig ratio formulas with a diagram:

Put these formulas into your

formula booklet under Chapter
9, Trig Ratios.
Note: Some people use the acronym SOH-CAH-TOA to remember these ratios.
Do you know what each letter stands for? If not, do a search online or contact your
teacher to find out.
Try some examples of how to use the Pythagorean Theorem, trig ratios,
and the sum of the angles in a triangle equal 180.

Your turn to explore the trigonometric ratios and how they

work.
