OCTOBER CURRICULUM
MATHEMATICScounting orally to 30 in French
--one to one correspondence, ordering numbers from least to greatest, representing numbers
in a variety of ways
--classification, patterning in relation to 2D shape

Understanding Math:

There are two math concepts we would like to

help you understand. The first is one to one correspondence. This refers to
your childs ability to associate one object to the number one, two objects to the
number two, etc. It seems easy to count 1,2 but you would be surprised how
children get mixed up after six or seven when they have to touch an object. The
second concept is conservation of numbers. This refers to a childs ability to
retain a number they have counted and then add on to it. If I place 8 blocks on
the table and ask the child to count them, then add a block to the group, does
the child start again at the number one or can they start at 8 and then add one
to get 9. Children need to practice these concepts. Remember, doing math
and understanding math can be very different

What is guided reading?

Every day, we follow a format to help your child learn to read. First, we model
reading to children by reading out loud various stories. Second, we ask the
children to join us in reading a text printed on large paper. This is called shared
reading. Guided reading is where the teacher meets with a small group of
students who share similar needs. The teacher works on a specific reading
skill or strategy with the students. They practice together and individually with
the undivided attention of the teacher. The other children in the class are
engaged in literacy centers. Following the students successful lesson, the
reader or text is sent home. The student has been successful and can read to
you with good ease and proper pronunciation. The teacher builds upon each
student needs and groups are fluid to help with this process. Every month, the
teacher performs an assessment of the students progress. This helps make
sure that the skill or strategy is being independently used by the student. After
guided reading, students work on the same skills or strategies independently
while reading in the class.
