Education in Russia and Great Britain
Education in Russia and Great Britain
Education plays a very important role in our life. It is one of the most valuable possessions a man can have.
During all the periods of human history education ranked high among people. Human progress mostly
depended on well-educated people. We get our knowledge of this world and life through education. Many
famous discoveries would have become impossible if people were not interested in learning. Self-education
is very important for the development of humans talents. Only through self-education a person can become
a harmonically developed personality.
A person becomes a highly qualified specialist after getting some special education. And professionalism
can be reached only through it. Even highly qualified specialists from time to time attend refresher courses
to refresh their knowledge.
Citizens of Russia have the right for education which is guaranteed by the Constitution. The public
educational system in our country incorporates pre-school, general school, specialized secondary and
higher education. Pre-school consists of kindergartens and creches. Children there learn reading, writing
and arithmetics. But pre-school education isn't compulsory - children can get it at home.
At First children go to elementary school. They go there for four years and get there elementary education.
It means they learn how to count, to read and to write. In most schools, children also learn a foreign
language starting from the second form.
Secondary education is mandatory in Russia. Children start school at the age of 6 and finish at 17. Children
study different subjects, for example Biology, Literature, Chemistry, Physics, Informatics. In Russia, the
nine-year basic incomplete secondary education is compulsory. After that, children have to decide whether
to continue their schooling and get the complete eleven-year secondary education or to enter a college
giving them the complete secondary education and trade training. After graduating from college, young
people become financially independent and can start working.
Currently there are different types of schools in Russia. Children and their parents can choose a regular
school, a school with advanced study of some subjects or a private school. Private schools in Russia are
not free of charge.
After graduating from school or college young people can enter universities or institutes, where they get
higher education.
But European education system is different from the Russian one. It is well seen on the example of British
education.
Education in Great Britain is compulsory and free for all children between the ages of 5 and 16. There are
many children who attend a nursery school from the age of 3, but it is not compulsory. In nursery schools
they learn some elementary things such as numbers, colours, and letters. Apart from that, babies play, have
lunch and sleep there. Whatever they do, there is always someone keeping an eye on them.
Compulsory education begins at the age of 5 when children go to primary school. Primary education lasts
for 6 years. It is divided into two periods: infant schools (pupils from 5 to 7 years old) and junior schools
(pupils from 7 to 11 years old). In infant schools children don't have real classes. They mostly play and
learn through playing. It is the time when children just get acquainted with the classroom, the blackboard,
desks and the teacher. But when pupils are 7, real studying begins. They don't play so much as they did it
in infant school any longer. Now they have real classes, when they sit at desks, read, write and answer the
teacher's questions.
Compulsory secondary education begins when children are 11 or 12 and lasts for 5 years. Secondary
school is traditionally divided into 5 forms: a form to each year. Children study English, Mathematics,
Education develops all sides of human personality and reveals his abilities. Besides, it helps a person to
understand himself, to choose the right way in this world. The civilized state differs from others in the fact
that it pays much attention to the educational policy. John Kennedy said: Our progress as a nation can be
no swifter than our progress in education. But it doesnt concern only one particular nation. We know that
science and art belong to the whole world. Before them the barriers of nationality disappear. So education
brings people closer to each other and helps them to understand their mentality better.
