Thesis Proposal
The thesis proposal consists of condensed versions of Chapters One, Two and Three.
Following completion of the research, Chapters One and Two are expanded as
appropriate and Chapter Three is rewritten in the past tense.
Purpose of the Thesis
A thesis is focused on answering an educational question, proving or disproving a
hypothesis.
Structure of the Thesis
Because the thesis is focused on proving or disproving a hypothesis or
answering/exploring an educational question, itis a research-based paper. Thus, it should
have the accepted structure for research-based papers:
Chapter One: Introduction
The introduction includes a brief overview of the context of the question, a succinct
statement of the research question/hypothesis, a description of the significance of the
study, and a summary statement at the end of the chapter.
Chapter Two: Review of Literature
The literature review is an overview of the scholarly material already available in the area
being researched.
Chapter Three: Methodology
The methodology chapter includes a restatement of the research question, a description of
the population for the research, a description of the research methodologies—appropriate
to the research question that will be implied.
Qualitative or quantitative research methodologies are appropriate to a thesis, as would
be a combination of research methodologies. In addition, the language and substructure
of the thesis should be appropriate to the research methodology selected.

Chapter Four is a presentation of the results of the research as it was conducted.
Chapter Five: Discussion
‘Chapter Five is a discussion of the significance of the findings, and of possible
educational recommendations which would follow from the research findings as well as
