Official 2-player fix
As pointed out already by another user, the official fix is to add the 3-player
family game action card "take two different building materials" at the start of
the game. I've found, it not only fixes the expansion 2-player game, but also
the basegame which suffered from extreme denial strategies.[/BGCOLOR]

We do something close. We replace the normal Day Laborer space with the
family-version Day Laborer space [one food + one resource of your choice]
rather than adding in the "take two resources" card.
This gives you the opportunity to get an early stone, without making a
drastic change on the rest of the game [two resources at any time is pretty
dang powerful; one resource + food is less so].
My argument for our fix over the "official" one is that the expansion seems
to have been tested on the family board with the option of using the full
game only thrown in as the level 3 variant much later.
So, rather than add more actions, we add a bit more "family" back in.

i don't use this card. If you open a 2nd spot to get whatever resources you
need I think the game becomes easier and blocking is a lot less useful. I like
2er game because of blocking, so I prefer the game as it is, at least the
vanilla game.
2er FotM games see less majors, that is true, because of the scarcity of clay
and stone at the beginning of the game. To open a bit the game, instead of
adding this card with the FotM, I would prefer adding the miniexpansion
'Through the Seasons'. It opens a bit the 2er game, major improvements
become a bit more accesible without increasing resources availabiliy, but you
have to plan to do it well. I like how it works with 2er vanilla game, but sadly
never tried with FotM.
