Rainy Days Ahead

The rainy, cool season is soon to be upon us. Please send your child(ren) with
rain gear (waterproof coat, boots and umbrella) and warm clothing to ensure
they are cozy and dry during the cold weather. Fresh air and play is a very
important part of your childs learning at school. It is also a wonderful opportunity
for physical activity that helps brains to grow and learn. As much as possible, kids
will be outside at recess and lunch, rain or shine so please ensure they have appropriate
clothing. Thanks!

Halloween
Halloween is fast approaching! While Halloween is an exciting, festive celebration,
please help us remind students not to bring replica or toy weapons to school as part
of a costume. We also ask that no masks be worn, for safety while at school. We also
appreciate little treats that families might want to bring to school or share with the class,
we ask that you are mindful that we are a Nut Aware school. Stay tuned for more
announcements from your childs teacher about classroom Halloween events.
Terry Fox Run
Our Annual Terry Fox Run was held today, September 30th! A giant thank you to Grade 3
teacher, Cheryl Chung for organizing our fabulous Terry Fox run & coin drive for the Terry
Fox Foundation & Cancer Foundation! We are still tabulating the money totals our generous
community raised. Thank you for your wonderful contributions!
Falcon Athletics
Soccer
Our in-school soccer league started last week for Grade 6 & 7 girls and boys.
We look forward to seeing which country team will prevail as our intramural
games begin. Thank you to Ms. Aitken & Ms. Pilton for organizing.
Cross Country
Cross Country is well underway at Fraser Wood. Our students have been running every
Wednesday afternoon at Bear Creek. Thank you to all our drivers and families who come to
cheer every week! A big thank you to Mrs. Easton-Mackay & Mrs. Nielsen for supporting our
team.

New Curriculums & FreshGrade (Communicating Student Learning)

Many changes are currently happening in education across the province. Not only has
September 2016 brought us a new provincial curriculum, it has also brought new ways of
Communicating Student Learning (formerly called reporting/report cards). This year Surrey
schools are offering two formats for capturing and sharing Student Learning with you the
parents. The first is an anecdotal template including teacher and student voice similar to our
previous report cards. The second option, you may have seen or heard about in the news or
on the radio, is a digital structure called Fresh Grade. Fresh Grade is an online
documentation of student learning. Fraser Wood teachers and some students have already
been playing and learning with Fresh Grade for the past year. Fresh Grade is a digital
student portfolio, it is a place for each student in class to document and share their learning
through writing, work samples, reflections, video and audio clips. It gives students an
opportunity to share a window into the learning at school with their parents and family. It is a
natural conversation starter for families. Families will be required to download an app to login to their childs confidential Fresh Grade account. All Fresh Grade information is hosted on
a dedicated internal server in Surrey by the Surrey School District. Please look for more
information from classroom teachers, the school and a future parent evening on
Communicating Student Learning and the use of Fresh Grade to share ongoing student
learning with you, the families.
Early Dismissal Day October 3, 2016 @ 1:33pm
This Monday, October 3rd, is our first early dismissal afternoon at 1:33pm. Please pick up
your children early on this day. Fraser Wood staff will be working collaboratively together that
afternoon looking at assessment and evaluation of student learning. Our next early dismissal
day, December 8th will be used to conference with families and students.

Parking & Drop-off/Pick-up

We are a few weeks into the school year and our parking/drop-off situation is still requiring
some safety reminders! Please remember to not drop students off in either the parking lot or
on 164 Street. There are signs and cones up to alert you where no stopping zones are. The
Kiss & Run drop-off is a fluid option. It is not a stopping spot. If you would like to stop and
walk, please drive further down 164 and walk. We would also like to remind you that cul-desac parking in many areas is prohibited and that speeds should be school zone. We have
had a few near accidents and we would like to keep all of our community students, staff,
parents and neighbours feeling safe.

Litterless Lunch & Recycling

We are asking for your help to make our community a litterless and environmentally friendly
place. In alignment with the City of Surrey, Surrey schools have started a Re-Think Waste
recycling program. Student leaders daily help to keep our school community a waste free
place by sorting through recycling, drink boxes/bottles, organics and garbage. The district
goal is to reduce our garbage and waste by increasing our recycling! All waste from lunches
need to go home with students in their lunch bags/kits. This includes all wrappers and half
eaten food. Please try to send food in reuseable containers (non-glass is preferred as
accidents do happen!) or provide a bag in the lunch kit for the lunch waste. Encourage your
child to take part in home lunch preparation and clean up and talk to them about organics,
recycling and litter. Your support is appreciated!
