Gas-liquid extraction (absorption)

High pressure extraction

For liquid-liquid and solid-liquid extractions, normally

organic solvents are used. For high pressure extraction,
a densified gas is used as solvent.

Solid-Liquid Extraction
(Leaching)

Leaching generally refers to the removal of a substance

from a solid via a liquid extraction media. The desired
component diffuses into the solvent from its natural solid
form.

Solid Liquid Extraction

(Leaching)
Basically, there are three components:
1) Solid solute ( we use CuSO4)
(MW=63.5+32+64 =159.5)
2) Insoluble solids (we use sand)
3) Solvent (e.g., hydrophilic or hydrophobic,
acidic, neutral or basic) (we use water)

Raffinate:
Residual material excluding the desired product (waste).
(phase 1).
Extract:
Desired or main substance which is extracted by the solvent is
called EXTRACT
The phase used to extract it is know as extractant (phase 2).

Apparatus

Objectives
1) The aim of this experiment is to investigate the
leaching process by extracting copper sulfate
from sand.
2) To compute the extraction factor and
percentage recovery.
3) The experiment also involves the calculation of
the extraction rate.
4) And plot extraction rate vs. time
7

Calculation
1) Draw standard curve of [CuSO4 ] vs. Absorbance

six standard solutions of CuSO4

weighing 20, 10, 5, 2.5 and 1.25
grams were prepared, to obtain the
calibration data using UV
spectrophotometry

5) Draw a plot of extracted [CuSO4 ] vs. Time

6) Calculate Extraction Rate and plot Extraction rate vs time
