COURSE INTRODUCTION
Special engineering apprentices is a different bread of engineering witch finds its
roots in the British colonial era where no universities or technical colleges in our country. The
British and locals who owned the industries were with the need to train their second
generation to takeover this family business. So they were sent through a special in plant
training which is called apprenticeship.
Until early 1970 individual organizations has followed their own standards and the
theory part is covered at technical college. With the establishment of National Apprenticeship
Board (NAB) it took the shape of a standard engineering course with an overall syllabi and
training modules coordinated and monitored by the NAB.
In late 1970s with introduction of the open economy, a large vacuum was created in
the field of engineering. The conventional university output couldnt fill the vacuum. it
required technologists rather than conventional gradate engineers to fill this vacuum. a
separate institute was established with the funds & guidance to UNDP & ILO.
Towards meeting this need, in 1975 then National Apprenticeship Board predecessor
of National Apprentice & Industrial Training Authority took over the task of streamlining this
scheme and established the Technician Training Institute in 1985 with ILO/UNDP assistance.
At present, the special Apprenticeship scheme is conducted at National Diploma level with
award of National Diploma in Engineering Sciences certificate. The Technician Training
Institute (TTI) changed its name as INSTITUTE OF ENGINEERING TECHNOLOGY
(IET) in 2006.
SYSTEM OF MANAGEMENT
INSTITUTE OF ENGINEERING TECHNOLOGY is governed under the supervision of the
Governing Council, which comprises of eminent public/private sector officials and headed by
the Chairmen, NAITA.
There are four main sectors headed by the Director/Principal.

*The Course in Marine Engineering has been designed to meet the mandatory requirements
for knowledge, understanding & proficiency in Marine Engineering at the operational level
related with STCW-95 and Model Course 7.04 of INO coverage. Marine Engineering
Division was awarded by ISO 9002-2000 standard certificate.
ACADEMIC PROGRAMME
As per above schedule, there are three phases in academic programmer.
BIP - This is a common programmer for all special apprentices.
Irrespective of field of specialization. (Except for the fact that a few subjects are
different in second semester).
GIP - Here, syllabi is based on main field of specialization.
SIP - This programmer is based on specialized field.
Academic programmer consists of lectures and course works. At the end of each academic
programmer there is an examination. Special Apprentices have to score above 50% for both
examinations Papers and course works.
INDUSTRIAL TRAINING
Industrial Training is imparted at different training establishments, according to the training
modules developed by panel of engineers.
Apprentices must enter in to a contract of apprenticeship with the training establishment for
the full period of training. This contract will be registered at NAITA.
The first twelve months of the training period will be considered as probationary period.
Industrial training is governed by following rules and regulations.
1 Students have to abide by the rules and regulations specified in the contract of
apprenticeship signed with the training establishment for full period of training.
2 Transfer of an apprentice from an establishment is considered only if there is an inability
to cover training modules. However, a few modules which cannot be covered in the
training establishment could be arranged in other establishment through short term
training up to a maximum of six months at a stretch or in one face of training.
3 If an apprentice finds employment in the final year, he could be transferred to that
particular establishment under following conditions.
