Assignment 5

Mozart, symphony 41, III, mm 1-16: Expository

The attributes that convey the function identified would have to be the fact that in
bars 1-3 the exposition is clearly defined alongside sparse harmonic
accompaniment. Once the exposition is given the motif is played in sequence as the
texture thickens and become busier, with what seems to be a high point in the
phrase at bar 9 where the score is the densest and the parts are being played the
loudest.
Mozart symphony 41 III, mm 28-44: Developmental
The attributes that convey the function identified would have to be due to the fact
that the primary motif is continued this time now in multiple instruments as well as
the fact that the melodic line now contains embellishments thus developing the
idea given. The texture is still very much homophonic with most instruments playing
some sort of chord tone or bass figure, with a few soprano voices playing the
melodic lines.
Mozart symphony 41, III, mm 68-79: Transitional
The attributes that convey the function identified would have to be the fact that
tension is increased rhythmically with multiple instruments trading off. Tension is
also created with the addition of various chromatic notes that rub against notes of
close intervallic relationship.
Mozart symphony 41, IV, mm 282-313: Parenthetical and Closing
The attributes that convey the function identified would have to be how a new motif
is created and is traded throughout the ensemble, this new idea of simply passing
the rhythms off seem to signal a close. This new idea seems to signal a close
because after the idea is presented and there is a systematic descent in the lower
voices.
Schubert, Der Doppelganger: introductory and closing functions
The attributes that convey the function identified in the case of introductory
functions would have to be the fact that the first four bars are used as an
introduction for the vocalist as well as to establish a primary harmonic skeleton.
This set of chords is repeated throughout the piece. These same chords that are
used to begin the piece are also used to close the piece giving the piece almost a
cyclical feel throughout, adding to the tension that the chords provide.
