Introduction
This lesson aims to equip students with the skills necessary
to complete visual literacy component of the exam.
Explani to students they will be practicing visual literacy this
lesson by analysing some images with the newly acquired
metalanguage.

Students
understand their
objective and have
a clear goal

List and define on the board several visual literacy
techniques.
This include student suggestions and must include the

Define these features on the board and clarify definitions as

students create a small glossary of terms in their book for
later reference.
AnalysisTake students through the first image as a whole class.
Display on projector or use print outs.
Identify three features and justify their purpose in the image
and what effect this has on the meaning.

misconceptions.

Example analysis: Discuss how the muted colours create a

sombre atmosphere and tell the audience this is a serious
and negative ad. The composition of the image, how the two
children are centred in a classroom and the potency of that
message in the context of America. The salience of the gun
and its size contrast with the kinder egg, making the egg
seem even more harmless.

the skills learnt
independently and
learn from other
students through
sharing of work.

Students write independent analysis and jusitifcations and
share these with the group. In addition students summarise
the overall message of the piece using their justifications
ConclusionAssess students confidence in identifying features and their
purpose in images. Add this response to the strength of
independent responses from the second image and address
