Allowable Wall Stress (fc)

The allowable stress in the wall, fb, is a function of the diameter and
radius of gyration of the corrugation. Start by calculating D/r:
D/r
< 294
294 < D/r 500

fb
33,000 psi
40,0000.081(D/
2
r)

> 500
D/r = Diameter or span / radius of gyration =
fb =

33.000 psi

0,91 < 294

=

227,53 Mpa

A factor of safety or 2 is applied to the ultimate wall stress to obtain

the design stress, fc.
fc = fb/2

113,76 Mpa =

1137,635 kg/cm2

Loads
The effect of live loads decreases as the height of cover over the culvert increases. For
single-span culverts, the effects of live load may be neglected where the depth of fill is more than
2000mm (8 ft) and exceeds the span length; for multiple span culverts, the effects may be neglected
where the depth of fill exceeds the distance, between faces of endwalls. Loading determinations
should follow the procedures set forth in AASHTO LRFD Bridge Design specifications section
12.6 with an earth load of 2000 kg/m3
Wall Cross-Sectional Area
At this stage youve determined the actual compressive stress in the pipe (per length of pipe)
and the allowable compressive stress in the steel. All you have to do is divide one into
the other to get the required cross-sectional area of steel you need to resist the load.
Amin = C / fc
