Warm up - text talk activity. Let students try to figure out the meaning, maybe they know most.
As an extension ask them to tell you what acronyms or word-replacements they generally use.

birthday or some other special event. If your class enjoys the back stories you can explain that their messages
have got all mixed up and they need to unscramble the conversation. If they want to cut out the conversation
and in order stick then they can.
Tell students to turn to page 11 of the reading and writing book. Explain that this activity is preparation for
writing their own plans. Work through writing the email to Molly, support students through it but allow them
to work independently. Afterwards encourage self-checking: spelling, grammar, sense.
Disney Planner
, give students the map of Disney and the planning stepping stones. Ask them to make a whole
day plan including times, activities and how to get there. Explain that the more detail they include in their plan
the easier itll be to use it later.
LESSON 6
Return to the writing book, this time page 12. Explain that this page is Mollys response to Tessa. They should
have been practising this kind of writing for a while so allow them to write independently and prompt them to
self check when they finish.
Disney Details
- tell students that in this email theyre going to be using the planning they did on the previous
worksheet to invite their friends to Disneyland with them. The planning details can focus on times, places,
what to bring etc. Remember to encourage students to model the unit grammar, (we will).
Game -
connect four
, this is a further opportunity to practise using the unit grammar, each counter requires a
I will statement before it can be added to the board.
Reading and writing book - page 9. Ask students to read aloud the informative passages about the Lam Tseun
Wishing Tree and Aberdeen fishing village. Check understanding of vocabulary and then go on to answer the
questions on the next page.
Boxing up
- explain this technique as a writing aid, (you can use the explanation on top of the worksheet), get
students to box up (pick apart), the text about the Wishing tree in preparation for making their own.
Once students can see where to go when breaking down a text get them to use the
boxing up my brain
worksheet in order to practise doing it the other way, (from idea to finished project). There is also a teachers
worksheet so that teachers can model using this technique. Allow research if necessary.
Draw up a draft
- explain that drafting is another key technique for writers and have them use their box charts
10
to draft out the article, (emphasise the roughness of this, it doesnt need to be neat). After draft completion
ask students to identify the changes they need to make and tell them to mark out the corrections before...

Take it in turns to make sentences about what you will do. Each time you make a
correct sentence you can claim a square by writing one word of your plan in that
square. The first person to connect four is the winner.
LESSON 6
A day-trip to Disneyland
A. These two friends were planning a day trip out but their phones storage malfunctioned and now
their conversation is all scrambled. Read through and try to reconstruct the conversation.

B. The person writing in the grey text bubbles seems to have a problem with spelling and
punctuation. Go through their messages and make corrections. (Of course people do use lazy
English to write texts but its always good to know how to write correctly.)

BOXING-UP
This technique for investigating and planning all types of text will soon have you mapping the most intricate and
intriguing of tales.
To investigate different texts you can split it into paragraphs/chapters/ideas and study what each part is made of. This
works just as well for persuasive arguments as it does for fairy stories or instructional writing. Investigating texts is a
great way to understand what different kinds of writing need to include as well as what works well and what isnt so
successful.

LESSON 6
Box-up my brain
After checking out the example in the book now its your turn to plan out an informative text using the boxing up
technique
.
Choose a historical site or cultural practise that youre interested in.
Remember:
- it is always much easier to write about something youre an expert in so try to pick a topic
that youre already interested in and something that you will either be able to research or
something you know loads about.
- think about the layout and flow of your article and let that help you decide what your
boxes will be, (you could include history/use/your experiences etc).
- try to pick out some top-notch vocabulary that you want to use in the final article.
