The tomato that you are purchasing at Rs 100 a kg or more from the vendor in your colony is
available for Rs 40-45 a kg at Delhi's Azadpur mandi, Asia's largest wholesale market. Ditto
is the story for other vegetables. A kilo of lady nger costs Rs 30-40 in retail markets but the
price at Azadpur mandi is only Rs 15-16 a kg.
There is a huge difference - ranging between 100 and 200 per cent - in the wholesale and
retail prices of vegetables in the city. Mail Today talked to vegetable sellers as well as
wholesale traders at Azadpur market to know the reason. It emerged that it is the middlemen
who are making huge pro ts out of the prevailing crisis. They are purchasing vegetables
from wholesale traders and selling it to retailers at steep prices.
In the weeks following the early monsoon rains in June, vegetables prices saw a sudden
jump. While the damage to crops because of the heavy rains affected supply, pushing up the
prices, dishonest middlemen have ensured the prices continue to hover at high levels.
Vegetable retailers in colony markets don't buy their stock directly from wholesale traders but
buy it from these middlemen. "Middlemen rule the markets. They buy in bulk from adhati
(wholesale traders). In fact, they buy vegetables as soon as they reach Azadpur mandi. We
have no option but to buy vegetables from them. For the last few days, we have been buying
