Abstract
TheestatemanagedbytheDepartmentofConservation(DoC)islargeanddiffuseincharacterandit
catersforawidevarietyofactivitiesandexperiences.TheDepartmenthascomeunderincreasing
pressureduetoadecreasingbudget,increasinguseoftheestateandchangingpreferencesonhow
theestateshouldbeused.
Tomanagetheconservationestateeffectivelyitisnecessarytohaveinformationaboutwhothe
resourceusersare,andwhattheirpreferencesare.Forthistobedonepracticallyinthepresent
economicenvironment,itisnecessarythattheinformationbecollectedandanalysedas
inexpensivelyaspossible.Thismeansthattheinputsoftime,finance,andexpertisemustbekeptto
aminimum.
Thepurposeofthisresearchistodevelopasurveymethodologythatreveals:thereasonsfor
visitationtoaparticularsite;thecontributionofenvironmentalfactorsto
satisfaction/dissatisfaction;theoverallsatisfaction;andrelevantdemographics.Thedrivingthemes
ofthismethodologyareeconomy,simplicity,andtransferability.
Threesiteswerechosenforthisresearch:KatikiPointHistoricReserve,GravesWalkway,andthe
MoerakiBouldersReserve.ThesesiteswerechosenbecausetheyarewithintheOtagoConservancy
oftheDepartmentofConservationandbecauseoftheiraccessibilitytoDunedin.Surveyswere
conductedateachsiteduringtheshoulderseasonof1994.Assuch,theresultsareonly
representativeoftheshoulderseasonandnotthewholeyear.Amultiplesatisfactionsmodelwas
usedemployingafivepointLikertscale.
Itisconcludedthatgentle,restorativeandpassiveexperiencesinanenvironmentallystimulating
areaaresoughtmyvisitorstoallsites.Thegreatestpotentialrisktovisitorsatisfactionislitterand
vandalism.
