Before using the Magnetic Numbers 1100 Activity
Set, make copies of this Really Good Stuff Activity
Guide and file the pages for future use. Or, download
another copy of it from our Web site at
www.reallygoodstuff.com. Punch out the Number and

To use the Blank Magnets, either write on them with
a permanent marker to label them permanently or
with a dry erase marker to be able to change their
labels again and again. You may also leave the Blank
Magnets blank to use as counters.
Introducing the Magnetic Numbers 1100
Activity Set
Introduce the Set by lining up all the Number
Magnets along your magnetic whiteboard and
counting them with students. Explain to them that
they will be using these Magnets to learn all about
numbers from 1 to 100 and beyond. Before placing
each of the activities below in your math center,
demonstrate it on your magnetic surface for the
entire class.
Individual and Center Activities
Use the Magnetic Numbers 1100 Activity Set in a
variety of ways in your math center or as center
activities for students to use at their seats:
Set up the Magnets on or near a magnetic
whiteboard attached to a wall in your math center.
Place the Magnets you wish to use on portable
magnetic whiteboards with instructions and

accompanying materials in zippered plastic bags

attached to the backs of the whiteboards.
Place the Magnets you wish to use on metal cookie
sheets with instructions and accompanying
materials in zippered plastic bags attached to the
backs of the cookie sheets.
Place the Magnets you wish to use in metal tins or
boxes along with accompanying materials and
instructions. Students then play the enclosed
games and activities on the surface of the tins.
For assessment, have your students write the
results of their center work on copies of the
Number Magnets Answer Sheet Reproducible and
place the reproducibles in the bag or tin. At the
end of each day, collect the reproducibles.
You can create endless individual center games
using the Magnetic Numbers 1-100 Activity Set.

ordering assignments on the labels, cut them out,
and attach a piece of magnetic tape to the back of
each label. For example, write instructions telling
students to put the Number Magnets in order from
1 to 100 or to put them in order by twos to 100, by
tens to 100, and so on. Choose an ordering
assignment for the day and place the label at the
top of a magnetic game board. Make this activity
self-checking by making one or more copies of the
Magnet Patterns Reproducible, programming the
patterns for an answer sheet, folding it in half, and
placing it in the zippered plastic bag.

ordering assignment in a zippered plastic bag along
with a copy the Number Magnet Game Instructions
labeled with the following instructions:
1. Pull Number Magnets from the bag and place
them in the correct order.

Challenge Activities
For more of a challenge on any of the activities
above, write numbers higher than 100 on the Blank

bag. Also, create additional Number Magnets by
copying the Magnet Patterns Reproducible on
colored paper, cutting the patterns out, and

Whole Class Games
Convert any of the previous activities to a fun
entire-class math competition. Simply divide the

Greater Than and Less Than

Label Blank Magnets with the < and > signs. Place
the appropriate Number Magnets for greater than
and less than problems in a zippered plastic bag
along with copies of the Number Magnets Answer
Sheet Reproducible and a copy of the Number
Magnet Game Instructions labeled with the following
instructions:
1. Pull two Number Magnets from the plastic bag
and place those Magnets on the game board.
2. Choose the > sign or the < sign to place between
the numbers.
3. Create ____ (insert number of problems) greater
than and less than problems and record them on
your answer sheet. Write your name and the date
on your answer sheet.
4. Put your completed answer sheet in the bag.

Explain how to play the game to your class: Tell the

teams to line up, with one player from each team
coming up to the game board at a time. Each player
will place the appropriate Magnets on the game
board to complete the problem. You will verify who
has the correct answer, and that player(s) returns
to the end of his or her line and the next student
from each team comes up.
Number Sorts for Teams
Choose labels from the Number Sorts Activity and
place them in two separate sections on your
magnetic game board. For example, place Even and
Odd labels on the board. Designate one team as the
Even Number Team and the other as the Odd
Number Team. Stage the Number Magnets on or

Skip Counting for Teams

Choose two labels from the Skip Counting Activity
and place them in two separate sections on your
magnetic game board. Label Blank Magnets with
numbers that might be included in both skip counts.
For example, place the label Skip Count by Twos and
Skip Count by Fives on the board. You would need to
create a second magnet set for 10, 20, 30, and so
on. Designate one team as the Skip Count by Twos
Team and the other as the Skip Count by Fives
Team. Stage the Number Magnets on or near the
board. Have teams line up and have the first member
of each team come to the front, choose and place
an appropriate Number Magnet beneath his or her
teams label, and return to the end of his or her line.
A team wins when all of its members have correctly
placed a Magnet in the skip-counting order beneath
the teams label.
Building Math Problems for Teams
Label Blank Magnets with a second set of numbers
and operation signs for creating an appropriate level
of math problems. Stage the Number and Operation
Magnets on or near the magnetic game board. Have
teams line up and have the first member of each
team come to the front, choose and place Number
and Operation Magnets to create a math problem,
and return to the end of the correct line. For
example, a student may place 4+3= Magnets. The
next member in lines comes up and places the
Number Magnet that solves the problem. A team

wins when all of its members have created and

correctly solved problems.
Writing Number Words for Teams
Stage the appropriate Number on or near the
magnetic game board. Have teams line up and have
the first member of each team come to the front,
choose a Number Magnet, place it on the board, and
use dry erase marker to write the number word
beside it, and return to the end of the line. For
example, a student may place the 12 Magnet on the
board and then write the word twelve. The next
member in line comes up and checks the word to see
if it is misspelled. If it is spelled correctly, he or she
places a check mark and goes to the end of the line;
but if the word is misspelled, that player erases it
and spells it correctly. The next student in line
chooses another Number Magnet and play continues
in the same manner. A team wins when all of its
members have correctly placed Magnets and written
or checked number words.
Making Number Sets for Teams
Stage the appropriate Number and Blank Magnets
on or near the magnetic game board. Have teams
line up and have the first member of each team
come to the front, choose a Number Magnet, place
it on the board, and return to the end of the correct
line. For example, a student may place the 9 Magnet
on the board. The next student in line comes up and
places nine Blank Magnets on the board. The next
person in line checks to see that the answer is
correct. If it is, he or she says it is correct, returns
all of the Magnets to the staging area, and goes
to the end of the line; but if the answer incorrect,
that player corrects it. The next student in line
chooses another Number Magnet and play continues
in the same manner. A team wins when all of its
members have correctly placed Magnets and
checked the sets.
