WELCOME TO RACE WEEK

Race week is almost here! You have been training and fundraising for months, and we know it hasnt always
been easy. But pretty soon, youll join others from TeamWoodside for an incredible experience that will
make all of your hard work worthwhile.
Here are some important tips for race week. Prioritize picking up your bib, Friday if you can, or Saturday as
soon as possible. Allow for extra travel time. Everything takes longer than you think it will. Dont miss our
team dinner on Thursday, October 13 @ 6:30 p.m. at Woodside Troy. Stay off your feet. Its not the time for a
walking tour of Detroit. Keep this program with you all weekend. Give copies to your friends and family.
TeamWoodside invites people to actively live the Bibles calling of caring for the orphan and the widow.
When people are introduced to the vision, they are forever changed. Many have joined TeamWoodside with
a blind faith, following their hearts more so than their heads. Their eyes are opened and their hearts are
broken for needy orphans in Thailand.
TeamWoodside offers the power of an active community. We are connected to a supportive, local
community through training and to a global community through the Thailand orphanage. TeamWoodside
seeks to model Christian unity -- anyone, including first-timers and people who arent as physically fit, can
join and actively live out their faith.
Becky and Paul are committed to working for TeamWoodside. They direct the overall training and
fundraising efforts, as well as the race weekend events.
They have been walking and running in race events for
25 years. Becky has run several half marathons, and in
2013, she completed the Detroit Free Press Marathon.
Paul ran his first marathon in Detroit in 1996. Since then,
he has completed many marathons, including Chicago,
Columbus, Cincinnati, Marquette, Myrtle Beach, Phoenix,
and Disney.
Becky and Paul have been married for 37 years and
have three sons and three grandchildren. Becky serves
as administrative assistant for Woodside Bible Church. Paul is
employed in the practice of law.

We are here to help you. Questions? Contact us at 248-515-2938 or info@teamwoodside.org.

THE STORY
TeamWoodside is a community of people helping each other cross the finish line while raising funds to
protect orphans. TeamWoodside will be running and walking
the Detroit Free Press Marathon through the streets of Detroit.

Why Orphans?
Every child deserves a safe home. Over 2 million Akha people live in Myanmar, Laos, Vietnam, Cambodia,
and Southern China. Akha orphans are victims of the Southeast Asia sex slave trade. Vulnerable orphans
are targets, and nearly 100,000 girls and boys now work
as prostitutes. Woodside Bible Church built the Thailand
Orphanage, offering a safe and caring environment for orphans.
TeamWoodside partners with the Thailand Orphanage, helping to
create fullness of life for children in need.

How Does It Work?

TeamWoodside equips people to make a huge impact on orphans
through endurance events, while inviting people into personal
journeys of health, physical fitness, and community. Many people
want to get in shape and do it for a cause, but dont know where
to start. TeamWoodside offers a fun and powerful way for people to tackle both. Members of TeamWoodside
do two things: train for the race and raise funds for orphans. TeamWoodside provides training programs
and resources, as well as a personal fundraising webpage to help. TeamWoodside provides group training,
offering team members a place to invite friends.

Amazing . . . Only $12

Through the TeamWoodside Thailand orphanage, $12 pays the cost for one day to care for a child. $4,380
provides shelter and care for a child for an entire year. These funds give children shelter, care, and
education, providing fullness of life for needy
orphans. This will prevent innocent girls and
boys from being tricked into the evil sex trade.
It opens the door to a promising future . . . the
kind of life God intends.

Crowdrise
TeamWoodside partners with CrowdRise, an
innovative online fundraising tool. Each team
member creates a personal online fundraising
page and commits to raising funds for the
orphans. Make an eternal difference and
encourage a TeamWoodside member by donating to their fundraising page at
crowdrise.com at TeamWoodside.

DETROIT MARATHON
The marathon course offers international appeal, traversing both downtown Detroit and Windsor, Ontario,
crossing the border at both the Ambassador Bridge and Detroit-Windsor Tunnel. You will run through historic
neighborhoods, around beautiful Belle Isle, and along the spectacular RiverWalk.

The Start
The start line is near the intersection of Fort Street and Cass Avenue, one block from the TeamWoodside Race
Retreat. With a wave start, smaller groups of participants are sent off at two-minute intervals beginning at 7:00 a.m.,
which eases congestion in those early miles. Groups are based on the projected pace on the registration form.

International Event
The Marathon division is an international event crossing U.S. and Canadian borders twice. It is a privilege and an
honor to use the Ambassador Bridge and the Detroit- Windsor Tunnel. Do not drop articles of clothing, water
bottles, tissue, or paper cups as you run across these prestigious landmarks.

Restroom Facilities
Portable restroom facilities will be available at the start area, on the course, & in the finish line area.

Time Requirements
You must be able to complete the marathon in six and a half hours from the time the Last Chance Pacer
crosses the start line. The marathon course will close at 2:00 p.m. A Last Chance Pacer is a person who will
travel at the average pace needed to cross the finish line at six and a half hours. Your progress will be monitored
throughout the race. If you fall significantly behind the Last Chance Pacer, you will be given fair warning to pick
up the pace. If you cant keep pace, you will be required to board a bus following the last chance pacer to be
transported back to the Start/Finish area.
The marathon offers two international border crossings during the course of the event. To continue providing
the unique opportunity of crossing the border twice, the Detroit-Windsor Tunnel must re-open to vehicular traffic
at 10:00 a.m. To ensure your safety and to meet all time limits, the Detroit Free Press Marathon has
established milestones. Please carefully review these milestones.

13

INTERNATIONAL HALF MARATHON

The International Half-Marathon course offers international appeal, traversing both downtown Detroit and
Windsor, Ontario, crossing the border at both the Ambassador Bridge and Detroit-Windsor Tunnel.

The Start
The start line is near the intersection of Fort Street and Cass Avenue, one block from the TeamWoodside Race
Retreat. With a wave start, smaller groups of participants are sent off at two-minute intervals beginning at 7:00
a.m., which eases congestion in those early miles. Groups are based on the projected pace on the registration
form. Please Note: Detours are planned and ready to go in the event of road closures due to construction. Check
www.freepmarathon.com and Facebook and Twitter for updates.

Restroom Facilities
Portable restroom facilities will be available at the start area, on the course, and in the finish line area.

Time Requirements
A Last Chance Pacer will be provided for your event. These pacers will travel at the average pace needed to
cross the finish line at four hours. Your progress will be monitored throughout the race. If you fall significantly
behind the Last Chance Pacer, you will be given fair warning to pick up the pace. If you cant keep pace, you
will be required to board a bus following the pacers to be transported back to the start-finish area. The half
marathon course will close at 11:30 a.m. The Detroit-Windsor Tunnel will re-open to vehicular traffic at 10:00 a.m.
To ensure your safety and to meet all time limits, the following milestones have been established.

14

US-ONLY HALF MARATHON

The US-Only Half-Marathon course is wonderfully flat. You will weave through some pretty cool Detroit
neighborhoods, including Indian Village and Belle Isle, a nice little island park in the Detroit river. Some
of the last miles are along the lovely International Riverwalk, which will be a welcome distraction from the
weariness in your legs.

The Start
The Start Line is near the intersection of Cadillac Square and Bates Street. The final turn west will be from
Griswold Street onto Fort Street, and the Finish Line is near the intersection of Fort Street and Cass Avenue,
one block from the TeamWoodside Race Retreat.

Restroom Facilities
Portable restroom facilities will be available at the start area, on the course, and in the finish line area.

Time Requirements
A Last Chance Pacer will be provided for this event. These pacers will travel at the average pace needed
to cross the finish line at three hours and thirty minutes. Your progress will be monitored throughout the
race. If you fall significantly behind the Last Chance Pacer, you will be given fair warning to pick up the
pace. If you cant keep pace, you will be required to board a bus following the pacers to be transported
back to the Start/Finish area. The half marathon course will close at 2:00 p.m.

15

MARATHON RELAY
A team of five runners will cover the entire 26.2 mile distance. Each runner will run one leg of 3-7 miles.

Getting to your Right Start Location

Before your team splits up to the four winds, its important to take note where each team member is going.
Make a plan now to meet up after the race at TeamWoodside Race Retreat! Here is a summary for each leg.

Leg #1 (6.3 miles) - Leg #1 begins at the official start line (Intersection of Fort and Cass streets in
Downtown Detroit). You must start in the appropriate wave which can be found on your bib and was
assigned to you based on your estimated pace. There is no transportation to Leg #1.

Leg #2 (6.1 miles) - Buses designated #2 will depart at 6:15 AM for exchange #2 in Windsor, located on
Riverside Drive between Bruce and Church (only runners with designated Leg #2 bibs will be allowed to
enter these buses). Buses will be located on Washington Blvd. between W. Fort and Larned, one block east
of the start-finish line.

Leg #3 (6.6 miles) - Leg #3 is approximately 1/4 mile from the Start/Finish line located at Michigan Ave.
and Washington Blvd. There is no transportation to this exchange.

Leg #4 (2.9 miles) - Buses designated #4 will depart at 7:00 AM for exchange #4 which is located at E.
Jefferson & Baldwin (only runners with designated Leg #4 bibs will be allowed to enter these buses). Buses
will be located on Washington Blvd. between W. Fort and Larned, one block east of the start-finish line.

Leg #5 (4.3 miles) - Buses designated #5 will depart at 7:00 AM for exchange #5 on Belle Isle, Sunset
Dr. and Casino Way (only runners with designated Leg #5 bibs will be allowed to enter these buses).
Buses will be located on Washington Blvd. between W. Fort and Larned, one block east of the start-finish
line. IMPORTANT: You are the only runner who will receive your medal at the Finish Line. If youre running
multiple legs, make sure you have the designated Leg #5 bib on when finishing or you will not receive any
medals. Please note there is NO TEAM RUN-IN across the finish line. Any team that has more than one
16 member crossing the finish line will be disqualified.

Marathon Relay Exchanges

There will be a staging corral area at each relay exchange. There will be volunteers calling out incoming team
numbers. This should help in locating your inbound team member. However, it is the responsibility of each
team to know when their inbound team members will be arriving at the exchanges. Hopefully, you will know
their pace so you can estimate their arrival time. Cell phones are a good way of communicating too, if your
team chooses to carry them. If you visit the Detroit Free Press Marathon live tracking link, you can track your
teammate as they cross each 5 mile point. If for some reason your inbound team member fails to show up at
the exchange within a reasonable amount of time, you are welcome to run your leg as planned. Your team will
not get an official time, however. Hopefully you are staying in touch so you know the status of each member.

Relay Reunion Area

The Relay Reunion area is located near the start/finish line. Only relay participants with their race number
bibs will be allowed to enter this area. Relay buses will be returning to the immediate vicinity of the Relay
Reunion area. Buses will return from the exchanges once they are full. Runners finishing Leg #2 are to walk
to the Relay Reunion area. Marathon Relay participants will receive your medal at the relay reunion area.

SPECTATOR GUIDE
Live Tracking

Spectators and participants can live track runners on race day through the Detroit Free Press Marathon App
or through the Live Tracking website. Simply enter in the name or bib number of the person youre following

WOODSIDE DETROIT WORSHIP

Woodside Detroit Worship - Federal Reserve Building
160 W. Fort Street, Detroit, Michigan - Sunday, October 16, 2016, 10:00 a.m.
Come worship God on this exciting day in the midst of a marathon in the Motor City as Woodside Bible
Church of Detroit and Pastor Tim Holdridge lead us to embrace the truth and love of Jesus Christ.
Woodside Detroit opened its doors in the Motor City in 2012, located in the Cass Corridor between Midtown
and Downtown. A diverse and close church family that has a deep love for the community, including
professionals, homeless, entrepreneurs, young adults, families, and college students. Discover the love of
God and the love of our church family as we carry out His mission to bring His kingdom to the Motor City!

RACE ETIQUETTE
TeamWoodside requests that you consider these etiquette tips as you enjoy the Detroit Free Press Marathon.
Please pay attention to pre-race instructions both print and verbal. What you read and hear will not only
help guide you through the course but will keep you safe.
Wear your race bib on the front of your shirt and SMILE! Photographers will be taking pictures of you
throughout the race.
Please enter your correct start corral. This will ensure that you are running with people who have a similar pace.
Run or walk no more than two abreast. Other runners will want to get by you. If you are walking in a group,
please start in the last corral.
If you want to run with a friend and they are in a different corral, the faster of the two can move back to the
slower corral.
If you are stopping at a water station, move all the way over to the table. Grab water and move away from
the table so that others may get water too.
Move to the side if someone behind you says Excuse Me or Coming Through.
Shout words of encouragement to other runners. You will hear words of encouragement in return.
When you are approaching the finish line, you may see loved ones cheering you on. Please do not
encourage anyone to join you in the finish line stretch. Your support team is very important, but please
communicate that the race course and finish area is for registered participants and staff only.
Enjoy the post-race refreshments, but remember that others will want to enjoy the goodies too. Please be
courteous to those finishing behind you and take only one of each item.
