THE STORY
TeamWoodside is a community of people helping each other cross the finish line while raising funds to
protect orphans. TeamWoodside will be running and walking
the Detroit Free Press Marathon through the streets of Detroit.
Why Orphans?
Every child deserves a safe home. Over 2 million Akha people live in Myanmar, Laos, Vietnam, Cambodia,
and Southern China. Akha orphans are victims of the Southeast Asia sex slave trade. Vulnerable orphans
are targets, and nearly 100,000 girls and boys now work
as prostitutes. Woodside Bible Church built the Thailand
Orphanage, offering a safe and caring environment for orphans.
TeamWoodside partners with the Thailand Orphanage, helping to
create fullness of life for children in need.
Crowdrise
TeamWoodside partners with CrowdRise, an
innovative online fundraising tool. Each team
member creates a personal online fundraising
page and commits to raising funds for the
orphans. Make an eternal difference and
encourage a TeamWoodside member by donating to their fundraising page at
crowdrise.com at TeamWoodside.
All event participants must pick up their race packets during the two-day expo.
The Detroit Free Press/Talmer Bank Marathon Health & Fitness Expo is focused on health and fitness!
The Expo is located in the Cobo Center Hall B. This event will feature exhibitors offering marathon
merchandise and the latest running footwear, apparel, nutrition, and technology. You must attend Packet
Pick-Up at the Expo to receive your packet and race bib, which will be used to record your official and
net time. Your packet will include a gear bag and race t-shirt. All TeamWoodside participants must stop at the
TeamWoodside Expo Booth (#216) to receive wristbands for entry into the TeamWoodside Race Retreat
and to receive lunch tickets.
You must have your race number to pick up your race bib and packet. You will receive an email close to
race day with a link to retrieve your race number. If you do not have your race number, computers will be
available in the pick-up area for a registration search. If you still cannot find your number, go to the
Solutions Table.
Packet Pick-Up for Marathon, International Half-Marathon, & Marathon Relay Legs #1 & #2
All participants are required to attend Packet Pick-Up in person in order to receive your race bib and
packet. You must show proof of identity and citizenship to receive your race bib and packet. For the
majority of participants (U.S. and Canadian citizens over 16 years of age and older), proof of citizenship
means a passport, passport card, or enhanced drivers license. U.S. and Canadian citizen children under
16 will be expected to present a birth certificate, naturalization card or passport. For additional acceptable
documentation, go to www.freepmarathon.com.
Packet Pick-Up for U.S.-Only Half Marathon and Marathon Relay Legs #3 - #5 & 5K
U.S.-only race participants can have someone else pick up their race bib and packet. The person picking
up the race bib and packet must bring a printed copy of the runners confirmation email. This can only be
done for domestic races (excluding the full marathon and international half-marathon and legs 1 & 2 of the
marathon relay).
Leave lots of time to get where you need to go. Detroit Marathon weekend is busy!

DETROIT MARATHON
The marathon course offers international appeal, traversing both downtown Detroit and Windsor, Ontario,
crossing the border at both the Ambassador Bridge and Detroit-Windsor Tunnel. You will run through historic
neighborhoods, around beautiful Belle Isle, and along the spectacular RiverWalk.
The Start
The start line is near the intersection of Fort Street and Cass Avenue, one block from the TeamWoodside Race
Retreat. With a wave start, smaller groups of participants are sent off at two-minute intervals beginning at 7:00 a.m.,
which eases congestion in those early miles. Groups are based on the projected pace on the registration form.
International Event
The Marathon division is an international event crossing U.S. and Canadian borders twice. It is a privilege and an
honor to use the Ambassador Bridge and the Detroit- Windsor Tunnel. Do not drop articles of clothing, water
bottles, tissue, or paper cups as you run across these prestigious landmarks.
Restroom Facilities
Portable restroom facilities will be available at the start area, on the course, & in the finish line area.
Time Requirements
You must be able to complete the marathon in six and a half hours from the time the Last Chance Pacer
crosses the start line. The marathon course will close at 2:00 p.m. A Last Chance Pacer is a person who will
travel at the average pace needed to cross the finish line at six and a half hours. Your progress will be monitored
throughout the race. If you fall significantly behind the Last Chance Pacer, you will be given fair warning to pick
up the pace. If you cant keep pace, you will be required to board a bus following the last chance pacer to be
transported back to the Start/Finish area.
The marathon offers two international border crossings during the course of the event. To continue providing
the unique opportunity of crossing the border twice, the Detroit-Windsor Tunnel must re-open to vehicular traffic
at 10:00 a.m. To ensure your safety and to meet all time limits, the Detroit Free Press Marathon has
established milestones. Please carefully review these milestones.

MARATHON RELAY
A team of five runners will cover the entire 26.2 mile distance. Each runner will run one leg of 3-7 miles.
Leg #1 (6.3 miles) - Leg #1 begins at the official start line (Intersection of Fort and Cass streets in
Downtown Detroit). You must start in the appropriate wave which can be found on your bib and was
assigned to you based on your estimated pace. There is no transportation to Leg #1.
Leg #2 (6.1 miles) - Buses designated #2 will depart at 6:15 AM for exchange #2 in Windsor, located on
Riverside Drive between Bruce and Church (only runners with designated Leg #2 bibs will be allowed to
enter these buses). Buses will be located on Washington Blvd. between W. Fort and Larned, one block east
of the start-finish line.
Leg #3 (6.6 miles) - Leg #3 is approximately 1/4 mile from the Start/Finish line located at Michigan Ave.
and Washington Blvd. There is no transportation to this exchange.
Leg #4 (2.9 miles) - Buses designated #4 will depart at 7:00 AM for exchange #4 which is located at E.
Jefferson & Baldwin (only runners with designated Leg #4 bibs will be allowed to enter these buses). Buses
will be located on Washington Blvd. between W. Fort and Larned, one block east of the start-finish line.
Leg #5 (4.3 miles) - Buses designated #5 will depart at 7:00 AM for exchange #5 on Belle Isle, Sunset
Dr. and Casino Way (only runners with designated Leg #5 bibs will be allowed to enter these buses).
Buses will be located on Washington Blvd. between W. Fort and Larned, one block east of the start-finish
line. IMPORTANT: You are the only runner who will receive your medal at the Finish Line. If youre running
multiple legs, make sure you have the designated Leg #5 bib on when finishing or you will not receive any
medals. Please note there is NO TEAM RUN-IN across the finish line. Any team that has more than one
16 member crossing the finish line will be disqualified.
There will be a staging corral area at each relay exchange. There will be volunteers calling out incoming team
numbers. This should help in locating your inbound team member. However, it is the responsibility of each
team to know when their inbound team members will be arriving at the exchanges. Hopefully, you will know
their pace so you can estimate their arrival time. Cell phones are a good way of communicating too, if your
team chooses to carry them. If you visit the Detroit Free Press Marathon live tracking link, you can track your
teammate as they cross each 5 mile point. If for some reason your inbound team member fails to show up at
the exchange within a reasonable amount of time, you are welcome to run your leg as planned. Your team will
not get an official time, however. Hopefully you are staying in touch so you know the status of each member.
The Relay Reunion area is located near the start/finish line. Only relay participants with their race number
bibs will be allowed to enter this area. Relay buses will be returning to the immediate vicinity of the Relay
Reunion area. Buses will return from the exchanges once they are full. Runners finishing Leg #2 are to walk
to the Relay Reunion area. Marathon Relay participants will receive your medal at the relay reunion area.
SPECTATOR GUIDE
Live Tracking
Spectators and participants can live track runners on race day through the Detroit Free Press Marathon App
or through the Live Tracking website. Simply enter in the name or bib number of the person youre following
and track their progress in real time. Participants can also share their results via Facebook and Twitter
through both the App and Live Tracking site. Spread the word about your great accomplishment!
We recommend parking at Woodside Detroit Campus at 123 Selden Street, Detroit, Michigan and taking the
shuttle to the TeamWoodside Race Retreat. However, you may want to drive to a place along the course to
cheer. If so, be sure to park outside the course route for easier egress.
The People Mover will begin on Sunday at 5:00 a.m. Two People Mover stations are located near the
TeamWoodside Race Retreat near the Start/Finish Line Cobo Center, Michigan Avenue, Fort/Cass, and
Financial District.
5. Michigan Avenue

RACE ETIQUETTE
TeamWoodside requests that you consider these etiquette tips as you enjoy the Detroit Free Press Marathon.
Please pay attention to pre-race instructions both print and verbal. What you read and hear will not only
help guide you through the course but will keep you safe.
Wear your race bib on the front of your shirt and SMILE! Photographers will be taking pictures of you
throughout the race.
Please enter your correct start corral. This will ensure that you are running with people who have a similar pace.
Run or walk no more than two abreast. Other runners will want to get by you. If you are walking in a group,
please start in the last corral.
If you want to run with a friend and they are in a different corral, the faster of the two can move back to the
slower corral.
If you are stopping at a water station, move all the way over to the table. Grab water and move away from
the table so that others may get water too.
Move to the side if someone behind you says Excuse Me or Coming Through.
Shout words of encouragement to other runners. You will hear words of encouragement in return.
When you are approaching the finish line, you may see loved ones cheering you on. Please do not
encourage anyone to join you in the finish line stretch. Your support team is very important, but please
communicate that the race course and finish area is for registered participants and staff only.
Enjoy the post-race refreshments, but remember that others will want to enjoy the goodies too. Please be
courteous to those finishing behind you and take only one of each item.
Celebrate! Thank the volunteers and have a great race!
