COMMENTARY ON AUTHORS NOTE- LIFE

OF PI
Life of Pi is a novel written by Canadian author Yann Martel. The
novel follows the story of a protagonist- Piscine Molitor Patel, who
is spiritually devoted towards Hinduism, Islam and Christianity, it
also follows his journey for 297 days on a life boat in the Pacific
Ocean. At the very start of the novel, the author has given an
authors note to give a small account of the whole novel.
Throughout the authors note the author has tried to give
information about how he got the story and from where he got the
story. He shows this with the help of the theme of storytelling,
religion and the idea of alternate stories. He has also use the
structure of the authors note to support the whole thing.
Yann Martel has tried to make the readers believe about this
novel, by creating a theme of storytelling throughout this authors
note and the novel. Martel has used this theme for showing the
fictional version of himself as an author to make the readers
realize that it will be surely written by the author Yann Martel, but
Martel has also tried to create this question in the minds of the
readers again with the help of the idea of alternate stories. He has
used the theme of storytelling for making the readers realize on
his story in the novel. As we all know the story of Pi is not true
after reading the whole novel, but here in authors note Martel
tries to play with this idea by using the theme of alternate stories,
to describe the same reality, an idea that will apply to religion and
Pis accounts of his survival. Martel has also created the theme of
religion in the authors note and throughout the novel. In the
authors note he shows this with the help of a fictional author of
the novel by telling us the story when his novel was compared
with other authors (Scliar) novel.
In the structure of authors note Martel tries to create an effect by
writing the whole authors note in italics which creates a real

effect in the minds of the readers it quite makes the readers

believe that it is written by the real author. It is balanced
structured by Part three another short section concerned with
creating the impression that this entire book is a work of nonfiction. To suspend our disbelief, Yann Martel has also created
some dialogues in the middle of the authors note to make it quite
real and support his idea that it is written by the real author. By
creating a fictional author in the authors note and in the novel
also support the same idea of making it quite real.
