Dear 2nd Grade Families,

I hope youre enjoying the cooler temperatures. I sure
am. The kiddos should have remembered that they needed to
collect 5-7 GREEN leaves tonight for science homework. If its
too late please don't worry. We should have plenty
tomorrow. We will begin discussing thermal conductivity and
insulators (well, in 2nd grade terms) to gather more
information needed to save our ice pops from melting next
week. Over the weekend please have your child gather
materials they can bring in Monday to use for building our
coolers next week.

October will be a busy, but exciting month for us.
Picture day is Tuesday, October 11. Our field trip to Hill Ridge
Farms is Thursday. Field trip forms are filtering in, but if you
have not received one to sign please let me know so I can
send another one home. We are still in need of 3 more
chaperones. Please let me know if you would like to come.
October also kicks off our Celebrations Around the World
unit starting with Diwali and Dia de los Metros. I typically
teach about the holidays and then we do an activity, but we
would love for someone to come in to talk about how your
family celebrates if you celebrate either. Alternatively, if you
would prefer your child not participate please let me know so
I can make arrangements.

What Were Learning

This week in reading we have been talking about rising action and focusing on using text
features as a way to help up determine the main idea of non fiction passage. We will still
focus on identifying and writing imperative and exclamatory sentences. In writing, we are
brainstorming favorite celebrations. In math we will be working on different ways to
represent a 3-digit number, 10 less, 10 more, 100 less, 100 more, and comparing two and
three-digit numbers. In social studies we are doing a fantastic job on our government
projects this week. Im blown away by their presentations and can tell they put a lot of work
into them. In science weve been discussing what it means to be an inventor, the design
process and learning about matter and properties of change in preparation to create
something that will keep popsicles from melting over a period of time.
