Arverne: Off the Beaten Path Spots Show Potential

By Katie McFadden

Could Arverne be the next

Rockaway Beach? This relatively
quiet, residential area is starting to be uncovered for the gem
that it is. Plenty of development
has taken place in Arverne over
the past decade, but much of the
focus has been on the south side
of the train tracks in Arverne by
the Sea. Now it seems that more
are discovering the potential of
the bayside and this secret spot
is not so secret anymore.
Since it broke ground in 2002,
Arverne by the Sea served as
a catalyst for new growth on
the south side of the neighborhood. Over the past 14 years,
this area welcomed hundreds

of new homes, a new supermarket in 2010, followed by a new

commercial strip, as well as the
much-anticipated YMCA, which
opened in 2014. However, over
the past year, the northern side
of Arverne has been getting recognition. Although it has been a
longtime established residential
neighborhood, the limited commercial spots are being scooped
up and utilized for ideas that are
completely unique to the peninsula.
You may stop in Arverne for
your car repair and service needs
with places like Amstel and Casino already established in the
area. Maybe you store your boat
at Seaway Marina. Or maybe
youre in on the secret of how
amazing the food is at Goodys,
a West Indian eatery that has
been serving up delicacies like
jerk chicken, oxtail and burgers
on Beach 72nd Street since 1989.
Yet lately, more action is taking
place here, which is bringing
people from all ends of the peninsula to this off-the-beaten path
area.

Relax Slowly I Turn

I can take directions okay.

Stand over there. Take a seat.
Raise your hand.
Put down the toilet seat
(okay, Im not that good at that
one). Do this, do that - all the
Simon Says stuff, Im pretty
good at.
Just dont tell me to relax.
I slide into the death chamber that is an MRI and Im told
to relax. This, I cannot do. I
take slow steady breaths; I tell
myself not to be such a weenie. I cant do it, I cant relax,
not when theres panicking to
be done.
I am on a plane and were
delayed, stuck on the tarmac,
the pilot says sorry, relax for a
bit. I wonder how much time
I will spend in jail if I pull a
Steven Slater hes the flight

attendant who said I quit, Im

outta here, activated the emergency chute and slid on down
on his way to freedom.
I cant even sit on the beach.
Too many ants in my pants.
I mean I could sit there and
empty a cooler but thats relaxing with a liquid cheat sheet.
Its clear I have a personality that is probably not suited
for a yoga relaxation class. I
should have thought of that
before accepting an invitation
to such a class. As soon as I
said yes, Id go, I began stressing out. Relax? How am I gonna relax? Especially if they tell
me to relax.
I spent about two weeks hyperventilating in anticipation.
As we got closer to this torture
session I asked what I was supposed to wear. I dont have yogi
clothes and its been a few years
since I wore a Nehru jacket or
an African dashiki or whatever
you wear in classes where a lot
of humming goes on.
I was told a t-shirt and
sweatpants would do and then

my wife added extra pressure

by saying, yeah you dont want
to be wearing shorts. And
her voice trailed off like, who
knows what would be falling
out.
The day I dreaded arrived
and I headed to the yoga studio. I dont know how I got
there because I was smoking a
cigarette and was blindfolded.
I made sure I got myself a corner where Id be up against a
wall but at least not surrounded by a bunch of relaxed people. They stress me out.
The brainwashing, er, relaxation session began with
the very pleasant voice and
tone of the yoga teacher. We
were all on the floor on yoga
mats. She said to get in a
position that we found comfortable. That wasnt going
to happen while sitting on
the hardwood floor so I laid
flat. I think the instructions
were to take some kind of
yoga breath. And then I think
she said, get in a comfortable
position and dont move. Of

course, that made me want to

move.
I was trying, really trying, to
relax but I heard music coming
from a car on Beach Channel
Drive. How can I relax when I
want to get up and go outside
and give the guy a what are
you an idiot? look.
There are twenty-two or
three people in the class.
There is a definite calm in the
room but like someone trying to cheat or at least eyeball
somebodys answers on a test
I secretly glance around the
room and detect two friends
who are definitely not relaxed.
Theyre fidgeting. Watching
them suffer helps me relax.
I start getting into this group
chill and then the class is over.
I hurry over to the sufferers
and enjoy their tales of misery. But like me, they thought
it was worth it.
I know as far as these things
go, the class was a huge success. And now, theyre planning another. Oh boy, here
comes the stress.

Do you have special places

you keep sacred in your memory? The mermaid and I have
a couple of these places, the
most special being the Ye Waverly Inn on Bank Street in the
West Village. When we were
first going out, pre-flipper days,
we frequented this restaurant
that is housed in an early 1800s
brownstone building. We got
engaged there and our daughter
had her first apartment around
the corner from there; in short,
its a special place. Thankfully, it
continues to be open.
We had a place before that
called Garvans on Waverly Place in the same area. We
loved the ambience, but unfortunately it closed many years
ago. We were lucky to find a
similar place a few years back

in the West Village called. The
Place. We went there for birthdays, Halloween, special occasions. It was a great place and
we brought the family there all
the time. But as we walked by it
last week we were horrified to
see that the whole place had
been gutted! We couldnt believe it, it was so sad. Now it is
Not-The-Place.
Here in Rockaway we seem
to be going through the same
thing, as the original Whits End
may be coming to, well, the end.
Whit has places at Riis Park and
the Boat Yard on 72nd Street,
but there was something iconic about the Rockaway Beach
Boulevard location, an ambience that was very strange, but
special. I have heard that Playland may be in trouble too with
the same landlord. That would
be a step backwards for the
community. I love Playlands
Sunday morning brunches. I
hope that rumor is not true.
I see that Yoga on the Rocks,
is, again, well, on the rocks, and

closed. Hate to see yoga places

close. Ocean Bliss is still open
on Beach Channel Drive. Went
to a Yoga Nidra there conducted by the mermaid, and she put
the twenty plus participants
into a deep yoga sleep with a
soft, calming voice. Like to see
some of that at the homestead!
I am hoping that we have
more openings than closings
in the coming year. I am excited about the prospect of the
Harbor Light opening and being able to stumble home safely after a night of dining with
neighbors, friends and family.
Maybe one day the Tubridys
Rockaway Boutique Hotel will
break ground and Beach 108th
Street will be transformed, even
though its pretty good right
now. And speaking of breaking
ground, or water, or whatever
they break when they build a
dock, when the hell is the city
going to start building the infrastructure for the ferry? I mean if
we really are going to have a ferry, shouldnt they start to build

something? Hopefully they allow us to park in the lot across

the street again, and they dont
hire that damn towing company from Stop and Shop. I mean
really, come-on Stop and Shop,
really! Enough already, stop the
charade, and stop towing.
I see the new bagel store on
116th Street closed, and then
quickly re-opened with a different focus; good for them. Whats
the deal with the new Irish Circle? They recast that place on
the boulevard, but it appears
that change is happening there
again. Well I hope that gets
worked out, the boulevard needs
more locally owned places and
less Dollar General stores!
So many openings and closings, its hard to keep track here
in Rockaway. The concessions
are now closed, but at least in
that case we can start counting
the days til next year when they
will open again. Support your
local shops and restaurants; we
need more openings and less
closings!

Retreat This Weekend: Finding Calm By The Shore

By Dan Guarino

Racing towards stillness? That

might seem like a Rockaway
contradiction in terms. But for a
peninsula of people who live between the equal pull of the big
city and calm ocean, the expanding Buddhist Insights may offer
some, well, insights.
A stress-free sample can be
experienced at the mini meditation retreat they are offering on
Sunday, October 9. It will be held
from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the Rockaway Artists Alliance T-7 Gallery
at Fort Tilden.
How much does it cost?
There is no fee to attend the
retreat, organizer Giovanna
Maselli told the Rockaway Times.
People can sign-up on buddhistinsights.eventbrite.com. (But)
the retreat is offered by donation,
with no minimum donation or
recommended donation.
Buddhist Insights is an organization connecting Buddhist
monks and nuns with people
in New York. I co-founded the
non-profit in January 2016 in

Buddhist Insights hopes for a Rockaway home.

Rockaway Beach along with
Bhante Suddhaso. The well-spoken Suddhaso is an American
monk who recently moved to
New York City after a decade of

living in forest ministries.

He also recently led a guided
meditation session at Tribute
Park as part of the day-long remembrance of 9/11. One partic-

ipant described it as surprisingly

incredibly calming!
However you dont have to be
a monk to benefit from the programs, meditations and teaching
sessions they are now promoting
both in Rockaway and throughout the city. You dont have to
be Buddhist to practice Buddhist
meditation. Buddhist meditation is a non-doctrinal practice
of mental self-investigation and
self-development, according to
Maselli.
About Sundays retreat she says
with events like this a teacher,
always a Buddhist monk or nun,
leads the group in several sessions of guided meditation, ranging in length from 30-60 minutes
each. Usually it is alternating periods of sitting meditation and
walking meditation.
There are also lectures given by the teacher, usually from
20-45 minutes long, immediately followed by Q&A and group
discussion of the topic. Topics
are related to the contemplative
practices of Buddhist meditation.

Army Corps of Engineers NEED FOR ACTION NOW!

By Hank Iori

It is important that the communities across the Rockaway

Peninsula focus on getting answers from the Army Corps of
Engineers. Our communities
have been patiently waiting for
the USACE to announce meeting dates for them to discuss
their draft plans to protect the
Rockaways from future storms.
In the interim, I urge individuals to read the first 19 pages
of the USACE report and write
to USACE to express your concerns. You can find the USACE
Draft by going to BelleHarbor11694.org click the news
tab on top, the second article
listed opens up the report.
When the public meetings are
announced attend and let
your concerns known! After
four years of waiting we deserve a comprehensive plan to
protect our communities and
for the work to begin!
Below is a letter sent to USACE on September 14 by the
BHPOA that expresses our concerns. Im recommending that
all civic associations across the
peninsula write the USACE expressing their concerns and request that immediate action is
taken to meet with the Rockaway communities to complete
the formulation of a plan and
begin the work.
Dear Mr. Falt, (Daniel Falt,
USACE)
The Belle Harbor Property
Owners Association has been
reviewing the Army Corps of
Engineers recently released
Draft Integrated Hurricane
Sandy General Reevaluation
Report and Environmental
Impact Statement.
Key issues of concern impacting the communities of
Rockaway Park, Belle Harbor
and Neponsit were discussed.
The key issues of concern are:
The fact that groins are not
planned to be placed in Belle
Harbor, Neponsit and a portion of Rockaway Park. The
community views groins as
a necessary component in
protecting our community, reducing the loss of sand
from the beaches and cou-

pled with other elements

such as reefs would reduce
the need for regular sand replenishment.
The plan calls for New York
City to undertake small-scale
sand replenishment projects. Is there a formal agreement with the City? We need
to develop a comprehensive
plan for the beach side that
will end the need to replenish sand on the beaches.
Temporary fixes of sand replenishment put these communities at risk. Considering
it has been four years since
Sandy this section of beach is
no safer than before Sandy.
A large percentage of sand
that was pumped onto the
beach is gone. Do we spend
another 20 million to replenish the beach again? In the
event a comparable Hurricane Sandy storm occurs,
the existing berm would be
of little help and the baffle
wall would fail and prove to
be very dangerous.
What is the status of the collaboration between USAC
and NPS? Has the National
Park Service given an indication that they support the
USACE draft proposal? Our
communities are being put
at risk if no action is taken on
NPS lands. In the event of a
storm NPS lands would become the back door allowing
floodwaters into the adjoining communities.
The Composite Seawall
Beach 126th to Beach 149th
we need greater clarification.
It appears in the rendering on
page viii the seawall on the
north side ends at the top of
the baffle wall installed by
the NYC Department of Parks
& Recreation. This would create several problems related
to safety and access to the
beach. Greater details are required and need to be shared
with the respective communities. On page xiii it states
that Final design and selection of the Storm Surge Barrier alignment and associated tie-ins are deferred until
additional analysis and design refinements can be conducted. It is four years since
Sandy, there is no excuse why

more detailed plans have not

been developed and shared
with the community.
Questions that need to be
answered:
Currently, what are the existing dollars available for the
proposed projects?
How is each recommended
project prioritized?
A cost factor, timeline and
milestones are required for
each component spelled out

in this draft report has that

been drafted?
Since Hurricane Sandy
struck four years ago, what
work has the USACE done in
communities along the impacted east coast area?
When will the public meetings in the Rockaways be
scheduled to discuss these
concerns?
Sincerely,
Hank Iori

Cheers to Rocktoberfest!

By Katie McFadden

OZapft is! Thats German for Its tapped and

the worlds largest beer
festival doesnt start until the Mayor of Munich
utters those words. Germany, where Oktoberfest
originated in 1810, actually starts the celebration
in mid-September and
continues it for roughly
16 days. However just as
the Munich festival wraps
up, the rest of the world is
just starting to celebrate
now that its October and

local places are getting in

on the merrymaking.
Right across the Marine Parkway Bridge in
Brooklyn, Aviator Sports
and Events Center will
transform into a German
Beer Garden on Sunday,
October 9. The event,
from noon to 4 p.m., will
feature German music by
Die Spitzbaum, plus traditional German food will
be available for purchase.
On the menu is Grilled

available. Tickets are $30
in advance at www.AviatorSports.com or $40 at the
gate. Only those 21 and
over will be admitted.
Closer to home, also
on Sunday, October 9,
the Belle Harbor Yacht
Club is expecting more
than 100 people to celebrate Oktoberfest with
popular local band Wine
With Sue. Lederhosen
is encouraged, but not
necessary. The event includes German beer from
sponsor Warsteiner, wine
and a buffet of traditional
German cuisine. The only
downside is that tickets
are now sold out.

If you miss out on

the Oktoberfest fun
this weekend, dont
fret. There will be plenty more Oktoberfest
fun going on at Riis
Park Beach Bazaar next
weekend. Riis will be
celebrating its 2nd Annual Oktoberfest from
noon to closing on
both October 15 and
16. There will be baked
goods by Rockaway

will be open for the season. Guests will also get
to try Whitney Aycocks

opens this month and
hell be serving up a
specialty menu for the
event. Of course, Oktoberfest brews will be
on tap. During Saturdays event, Walker and
the Brotherhood of the

tunes while the Sunnyside Social Club will perform on Sunday.

Rockaway Waterfront Alliance Report

INTERNATIONAL COASTAL CLEANUP

On Sunday, September 18th,

the Rockaway Waterfront Alliance (RWA) hosted the International Coastal Cleanup
in partnership with the New
York City Chapter of Surfrider
Foundation, the TRASH project, and the American Littoral Society.

In Rockaway, the clean

up took place at Beach 59th
Street. Armed with gloves,
tally sheets, and bright polka-dotted garbage bags, donated by the TRASH project
and artist Adrian Kondratowicz, participants cleared
about a mile of beach. Altogether they collected over 376
pounds of garbage, including
727 plastic pieces, 422 cigarette butts, 345 food wrappers, and 303 straws/stirrers.
RWAs Rockaway beach
cleanup was part of a larger
annual international effort
to host simultaneous beach
cleanups across the world. The
International Coastal Cleanup
is meant to increase awareness and public participation
in solving the problems of pollution in our oceans. As participants pick up garbage, they
identify each piece of trash on
a tally sheet. After finishing
the cleanup, these tally sheets

NY Medical

are sent to the American Littoral Society, which combines

the trash found on Rockaways
beaches, along with those
from all the other simultaneous beach cleanups. By creating an accurate census of
the garbage across the worlds
beaches, they can help scientists and policymakers devise
strategies to combat pollution
in our oceans.
RWA would like to thank
the Rockaway community for participating in this
event. This year in particular, they were thrilled to have
over eighty attendees from
toddlers to seniors. As Conor
MacCourtney, Communications Coordinator, Surfrider
Foundation, NYC Chapter
said, It's up to you and I
to take care of our environment. And it all starts with
building awareness." For
future events please check

SS

Tow In The Know

Going Elsewhere
Dear Editor:
Stop and Shop is losing my
business just for this (towing)
practice. Who doesn't park
their car at the supermarket,
go to the supermarket, then
go to the local places such as
the post office, then return
to the car and drive home?
Heck, my mom used to park
there, get her hair done, then
pick up the groceries.
I do understand not allowing people to stay the whole
day to go to the beach or basically using the parking lot
for a long period of time and
not using the store, but let's

Dear Editor:
As a former tow company
owner in Brooklyn, I know
the game that is being played.
Number one: There is no
doubt in my mind that somebody is getting cash every
time a car is towed. Number
two: A car cannot be taken by the tow company unless an authorization to tow
slip is signed by the person
in charge of the property at
the time of the tow. Number
three. This is predatory towing at its finest. They most
definitely have spotters in
unmarked cars patrolling the
lot telling the tow truck which
one to take. Which is in clear
violation of the law because
NYC DCA law states "a property agent must be present to
authorize the removal of the
vehicle." They simply can-

not just take a car, because a

signature is required by the
property agent at the time of
the tow. Making complaints
to the NYC Department of
Consumer Affairs regarding
this issue is your best option.
Dante

On It
Dear Editor:
You are so on it. Thanks
Rockaway Times for keeping up with the Stop & Shop
parking and towing situation.
As a regular customer, I and
many others can really attest
that, you never find this lot
to be full in which you have
to go elsewhere to park your
vehicle. And that goes for our
summer months also when
the beach is open.
Danny Ruscillo

Stay On It
Dear Editor:
Please stay on top of this
until it is resolved. We want
to be able to go to the Post
Office or across the street and

The Rockaway Times

to Stop and Shop without the
fear of being towed. Thanks
a lot Dan. (Dan Guarino who
reported on the towing)

Call For Change

Dear Editor:
For the last eight years we
live in a nation of ever-increasing taxes and prices,
where the working man pays
for the food, pays for the rent
or mortgage, pays for health
care, pays for the cellular
phone, pays taxes for a public
school that doesn't perform
and yet has to pay for a good
private school, pays for his
Social Security. Then when
time comes to retire he can't,
because there's not enough
money. The Social Security
is under-funded and about to
go bankrupt.
Whereas the man that
doesn't work gets free food
stamps, free Section 8 housing, free Obamaphone, free

disability and doesn't pay
Social Security, because he
is assured of all those well
funded secure free programs
for life.
It is time to reverse this
disturbing system, run by
corrupted politicians. All
concerned working Americans must vote Alan Zwirn
for NY State Assembly, Michael Conigliaro for NY State
Senate and Michael O'Reilly
for US Congress.
These men are good
old-fashioned role model
Americans. Alan Zwirn, 34
years as a teacher, former
member of the board of the
West End Temple, directed
and stage-managed the annual Little North Pole to the
joy of everybody in Rockaways. Michael Conigliaro is
a successful real estate businessman.
Mike O'Reilly, former US
Marine, former Delta Airlines
pilot, graduated in New York
Law School. It is the character of these candidates that

counts. They are running
against a corrupted system of
politicians ruining America.
David Doblack

Ferrys Return!
Dear Editor:
We look forward to the
return of our ferry service
in 2017. However, there are
some who warn the service
is doomed to fail even before
it starts. I disagree. We have
every reason to hope the city
will keep the Rockaway Ferry
afloat for many years this time.
That doesnt mean there
couldnt be some potential
problems with the service
when it is launched. But EDC
representatives have assured
me that every issue will be
addressed and resolved, and
that, come what may, the
ferry will continue to run.
Instead of moaning and
groaning, we as a community should work with the city
before the Citywide Ferry
Service is launched. Upcoming outreach meetings with
the EDC and Hornblower

Protect your world

Page 19

must be well-attended to
show community interest
and support, and we should
come well-prepared with
questions and comments.
Unresolved issues include
the need for an earlier weekday schedule serving riders
needing to be in Manhattan
by 7 a.m.; the need for free
shuttle bus service connecting the Beach 108th Street
ferry landing with more
eastern and western Rockaway neighborhoods, and
with Broad Channel; and
how to accommodate potential overflow ridership on
the 149-passenger ferryboats
slated for use.
Once the ferry service is
launched and our issues
are resolved one by one, we
should never assume our
work ends there. We must remain on top of the service to
ensure its success.
I promise to do my part by
riding the ferry every day, as
I did previously to promote
it, to be a liaison between the
ferry riders, the city, and the
ferryboat operator, and to

chronicle the wonders of the

daily ferry ride via my digital
photography. We have every
reason for optimism that this
time our ferry service WILL
succeed and continue for
many years to come.
Stay tuned for dates and
times of upcoming outreach
meetings with the EDC,
Hornblower and local community groups, once Hornblower finishes briefing our
elected officials on ferry progress.
Lets work together to sea
success. Keep calm and ferry on!

Community House Gets Fresh Start

By Katie McFadden

The community is coming back to the Community

House. The first year of business is always the hardest but
the owners say they made it
over the first year hump with
success. Now theyre putting
their focus on their original
mission of making the community a part of the Community House. With a new
management team, a staff of
almost all locals and a new
chef cooking up homemade
recipes shared by community members, the Community
House is starting to feel more
like a home.
When
the
Community House, located at 101-19
Rockaway Beach Boulevard,
celebrated its first anniversary this past August, it was
time to recap on both the
strengths and weaknesses.
Owner Kelley Brooke says
the first year exceeded their

expectations financially with

growth projections exceeded

These are rates for non-tobacco users in our Preferred Best category and do not include any riders. If you continue
the policy beyond the initial level-premium period (in this case, 10 years), premiums will then increase annually
through age 95 but will never be more than the maximum stated in the contract. In Montana, rates for females are
the same as those for males. Paying more often than annually will result in higher premiums. Availability and
actual rates will vary based on how you satisfy our underwriting and eligibility criteria. The issuing company may
have the right to contest the policy for misrepresentation or to apply a suicide clause. Rates as of August 2014.
Term essential is issued by Pruco Life Insurance Company in all states except New York, where it is issued by
Pruco Life Insurance Company of New Jersey. Both are Prudential Financial companies located in Newark, NJ.
Each is solely responsible for its own financial condition and contractual obligations. The policy form number is

There are also two or three breaks

during the day, for lunch and for
afternoon tea.
And once the meditative participants, who come from all
walks of life, leave the quiet of
the gallery and step back into the
louder world?
This is not a feel good for the
day experience. As Maselli explains Meditation practice, informed by a solid intellectual understanding of the theory behind
it, allows people to deeply examine the nature of their own mind.
With understanding of their own
mind, they are able to identify the
ways that they cause themselves
discomfort, displeasure, and discontent. When it is understood
that all of ones dissatisfaction
is self-afflicted, it then becomes
clear that it is possible to change
the cycle - eliminating all of ones
mental discomfort and establishing a baseline of unconditional
happiness.
Maselli and company would
also like to make that path to
well-being open to even more
people. Buddhist Insights has

Daniel S

started an online fundraising

campaign to secure a site and
open a meditation retreat center
right here in Rockaway.
Up until now they have relied
on the generosity New York City
residents to accommodate visiting
monks and nuns in their homes.
They have been renting out spaces from other organizations to
provide retreats. As their fundraising page notes We have offered
free meditation classes, retreats,
cultural events, and mentorship
programs led by Buddhist monastics everywhere from yoga studios to museums, all the way to the
streets and the subways of the city.
Currently we are looking to acquire our own location where we
can both host visiting monastics
and also provide regular daylong
and weekend retreats. For more
information check out the fundraising site youcaring.com/buddhistinsights and also buddhistinsights.com.
In the meantime you can check
out Buddhist Insights retreat Sunday retreat at RAA at Fort Tilden.
It might just be that calm space
youve been looking for between
the city and the shore.

Faith and Love

Faith and Love will guide you
through difficult times. So often
we hear of suffering and loss in
our life. Sadness may sink deep
into your heart because you
have loved and now you have
lost. We try to console and help
one another as best we can.
Love and compassion will help
to heal your broken heart. Trust
and believe.
Without my faith I would not
be able to move on and continue to live life fully. From
a young age, it was instilled

in me to believe in God. It
doesnt matter what religion
you belong to, but if you have
your faith, you have the greatest gift you will ever receive.
There will be good times and
bad times, but you will understand this is all part of
life. You will question why
there is such sadness and loss
but your faith will carry you.
Faith gives you strength, integrity and dignity.
Recently, I had the opportunity to participate in a

Page 31

fundraiser on Long Island to

raise money for human trafficking awareness. Myself and
two yogi friends attended the
event doing 108 sun salutations to bring awareness to
this horrific crime. If you have
ever attended a yoga class,
you may begin the class with
four to eight sun salutations
but never 108. It was an honor
and pleasure to set our intentions on humanity and bring
awareness to a crime committed every 30 seconds in the
world. Throughout the sun
salutation there was a chime
that rang every 30 seconds to
remind us of human trafficking. They have rescued many
children from brothels in India and continue to go back to
India every year to help these
children. The average age is
12 years old. Having raised
three grown children who
have been loved and nurtured
their entire lives, I was devastated to learn of the atrocities these young children live
through.
With love and faith their
spirits are being brought back

to life. The people who rescue

them are doing Gods work.
In the past five years they
have raised enough money
to build a three-story building to house the children.
Through their faith and love
they are making changes in
a world we may never understand. To go into remote
areas in India and save these
orphans who have been kidnapped from Nepal and other countries is nothing short
of a miracle. It is because the
rescuers have a strong faith
and have been called to do
this work. It makes you think
about what suffering really is. When I heard all the
stories about the children I
prayed to God to help them.
If we do not have our faith,
we will break. I believe in
prayer and intention. While
doing 108 sun salutations
each one had an intention/
prayer attached to it. Pray
for peace, pray for compassion, pray for healing, pray
for love, pray for freedom,
pray for humanity. PRAY for
FAITH.

Historian
Emil R. Lucev
By Emil R. Lucev, Sr. & his daughter
Katie Lucev

Rockaway Historian Emil R.

Lucev Sr. began his venture into
the history of The Rockaways
back in the early 1970s. It was
then that information was being
gathered concerning proprietor
names found embossed on the
growing collection of antique
Rockaway bottles found throughout the peninsula and in Jamaica
Bay. What was discovered about
old Rockaway astounded him!
In 1980, Emil became associated with The Wave, a Rockaway
newspaper since 1893, as a historian. Emil had many articles
and photos published in a weekly
column in order to share his historical knowledge with all Rockawayites.
A few years ago after retirement, Emil came out once again

to write a column, this time for

The Rockaway Times. Emil is
assisted by his daughter Katie Lucev in writing the articles
Rockaway Ol Times, and will
continue her Fathers legacy. So,
the new venture into Rockaways
history begins.

DOC

By Peter Galvin, MD

Measles
By Peter Galvin, MD

Measles is one of the most

highly contagious viral diseases known to man. About 90
percent of unvaccinated individuals exposed to it will develop the disease. Life threatening and severely disabling
complications can occur. Measles has made a big comeback
in the US due to an influx of
undocumented and mostly
unvaccinated individuals from
poor countries plus a number
of parents who mistakenly refuse to get their children vaccinated. Both factors impact a
concept called herd immunity.
Herd immunity means that,

for example, in a group of 100

people if 95 have been vaccinated then the five who were
not will be unlikely to be exposed to the disease. When the
number of vaccinated people
declines the odds of infection
go up. Worldwide there are 20
million measles cases a year
with about 150,000 deaths annually from complications.
The incubation period for
measles is seven to 21 days
with most cases becoming apparent 10 to 12 days after exposure. Initially, measles presents
as a severe respiratory illness
with high fevers, lethargy, loss
of appetite and the three Cs:
cough, coryza (runny nose) and

conjunctivitis (red eyes). Most

patients appear to be severely
ill. Koplik spots, which only occur with measles, are seen in the
first few days of infection. They
are raised, bluish-white spots
with a red base that appear on
the inside of the cheeks, usually opposite the first molar. A day
after the Koplik spots are seen a
red rash appears on the face and
neck and usually spreads to the
entire body. The rash lasts three
to seven days and patients are
most contagious from four days
before the rash to four days after.
Complications include pneumonia, croup, ear infections,
encephalitis (brain infection
which often causes brain damage) and a number of other
disorders including hepatitis.
There is no specific treatment
as antiviral medications are ineffective. Children with measles
should receive supplemental
Vitamin A as studies have shown
that it reduces complication and
death rates in infected children.
Vaccination, usually with MMR
vaccine, starts with the first dose
at 12 to 15 months of age with a
second dose given between ages

Page 33
four to six. Ninety-nine percent
of vaccinated children will develop immunity from vaccination confirmed by lab tests plus
the immunity does not decrease
or disappear with aging. Adults
born before 1957 are assumed
to be immune due to childhood
infection but these same adults
may be immunized without any
problems. Because the vaccine
contains a live but attenuated (weakened) virus about five
to 15 percent of recipients will
develop a mild fever and rash
about five to 12 days after vaccination. They are not, however,
contagious and cannot transmit
the virus.
Egg allergy is not a concern
with vaccination and the MMR
autism link has been thoroughly
debunked. Contraindications to
vaccination include severe HIV
infection, pregnancy, a history
of severe allergy to the vaccine in
the past and a current moderate
to severe acute illness.

A Look At St. Edmund Prep HS

This September history was
made as 12 SEP students and two
teachers traveled to Havana, Cuba
for a week of outreach and service
where they donated money to establish daycare centers.
St. Edmund Prep High School, a
Roman Catholic college preparatory School, is the only Catholic
School in Brooklyn and Queens
that has the elite International
Baccalaureate Programme. The
superior program encourages the
development of skills to live and
work with others globally. Students who have been awarded
the IB Diploma have earned as
many as 36 college credits and
the school currently has 32 Full
IB Diploma candidates.
St. Edmund Preparatory offers
a rigorous curriculum designed
to meet the needs of all our students. Advanced Placement
Courses and, through our partnership with St. John's University, college level courses, STEM/
STEAM, Robotics, a Fine Arts
curriculum that includes dance
and band, and the offering of
Mandarin as a foreign language

are examples of the broad and

challenging academics.
An International Scholars
Honors Program, a College
Exploration Program, an Internship Program, a Teaching
Program, a Summer Outreach
Program and the addition of
the Harvard Model Congress
allows students to experience
life outside of the Prep.
The Emmaus and Cleopas
Retreat Programs give students
an opportunity to explore their
relationship with God. Students embrace the call to service as they serve the homeless in Philadelphia, cook and
serve a Thanksgiving meal to
those less fortunate in NY, donate to school blood drives,
and participate in a variety
of collections throughout the
year. Students participated in
the Hunger Awareness Challenge which is a school-wide
project that brings awareness
to poverty and hunger in our
community and globally. This
September history was made as
12 SEP students and 2 teachers

traveled to Havana, Cuba for a

week of outreach and service
where they donated money to
establish daycare centers.
The school has three stateof-the-art science labs, two
new updated technology labs,
SMART board technology and
a 1:1 Chromebook Initiative
Program. The Library Media
and Fine Arts Center houses a
technology lab, a contemporary band room, an art studio,
weight training room, and a
dance studio.
In addition to a complete varsity athletic program, Girls Lacrosse
was added this year and had a full
squad. Crew, the schools competitive rowing team, doubled in size
from last year. The school offers
over 50 clubs and activities including art, technology, STEM robotics,
the Euro Challenge, the Investment
Team, dramatic/musical performances, and, award winning, Literary Magazine and Yearbook.
School programs continue to
grow at the Prep allowing students to experience life outside
the classroom and foster new

friendships. The SEP Stringed

Ensemble was debuted this year
during concerts that showcased
the schools Big Band, Symphonic Orchestra and the Latin
Ensemble. Theatre had its largest cast in school history and
performed Pippin to soldout performances. The Model Congress Team traveled to
Washington, DC and received
recognition in a nationwide
competition. An extraordinary
number of students participated
in the International Exchange
Program and the Travel Study
Program which led students on
an adventure to Australia, England, Italy and Spain.
Bus service is available in the
areas of Howard Beach, Broad
Channel, The Rockaways and
Breezy Point.

October
Boardwalk Update

High school is four years; the Prep is forever

ST. FRANCIS PREPARATORY SCHOOL
6100 Francis Lewis Blvd. Fresh Meadows, NY 11365
(718) 423-8810 www.sfponline.org

The Department of Parks

and Recreation recently
released its boardwalk update for the month of October. Most of the boardwalk
is already open, but minor
work throughout will occur this month while major
work occurs in the unfinished strip from Beach 19th
to Beach 39th Street.
Phases 1 through 5A , or
Beach 126th to Beach 39th
Street was open in time for
the summer 2016. Lately,
some flatwork was done
on the landside of Beach
126th so that the vehicle
and bicycle ramps are now
complete.
Landscaping
will occur sometime this
fall around Phase 3 (Beach
106th to Beach 126th),
Phase 4 (Beach 60th to
Beach 86th) and Phase 5A
(Beach 39th to Beach 60th).
Crews may be seen in all

areas as they run through

punch-list items.
Phase 5B, from Beach
19th to Beach 39th is where
a bulk of the work is taking
place. In this area construction fence installation, as
well as clearing and grubbing, is substantially complete. Removal and salvage
of the existing boardwalk
is ongoing and will continue into October. In October
you will see several activities begin, including boardwalk pipe and H-pile driving, pile driving for beach
side access structures, sand
retaining wall installation,
and placement of sand fill
under the new boardwalk.
Phase 5B is expected to be
open before Memorial Day
weekend 2017. Currently,
no beach access is available in this area as construction goes on.

Custom Platform Bed

By Artie Wallace

When most people hear

Platform Bed, they think of
the old fashioned beds that
are just a flat surface with a
few drawers underneath.
Custom Platform Beds for
kids can turn an ordinary kids
room into an adventure.
Some of the things that can
be done beneath the bed are
creating a play area, making
a full-size playhouse for girls,
making a fire truck (or other
type of truck) for boys, making an arts and crafts area, a
popular one is a clubhouse,
the list goes on.
For teens, custom platform
beds can add space to a room

for a desk, a library or whatever theme the teen is into. For

adults, custom platform beds
raised as little as two feet off
the floor can add much more
storage space. If youre a pet
lover, a small area under the
bed can be left open for a
sleeping area for dogs or cats.
For the more creative person,
a floating platform bed may
be your thing.
On a skill level of 1 to 10 (10
being the hardest), custom
platform beds are about a 10.
Some of the key things to do
if youre planning to build a
custom platform bed are:
1- Decide on the mattress size
youre going to use (for kids
beds always go one size larger).

2- Decide on what kind of

platform bed youre going to
build and plan it out on paper
before you start building it.
3- Keep in mind access. You
dont want to build a great
bed and have no way to get
into it.
4- Plan on extra weight.
Keep in mind kids like to
jump on beds, so make it
strong enough.
5- When in doubt, upsize.
If you think you need a 2x3
to support something but
arent sure, use a 2x4. The
same applies with all lumber.

6- Research. If youre adding stairs, railings, etc. to

your bed and youre not sure
how to make it 100 percent
safe, research it online. There
is a world of information out
there, take advantage of it.
7- Remember people's
tastes change. So build it
leaving yourself with the option to alter it later if needed
(Example: if making a clubhouse under the bed, make
the walls removable).

Life With Our

Artistic Child
By Kami-Leigh Agard

THE BATTLE OF THE BOWELS

By Kami-Leigh Agard

The holy grail of potty training.

For parents of any child,
artistic or not, potty training
is a major battle. For years, it
was an especially grueling war
as my autistic daughter was
unable to verbally communicate that she needed to go.
However, today the fruits of
victory are so sweet that I can
now reflect and laugh.

When she was just born, I

tenderly cradled her and whispered, My little Pooh. Her nickname Pooh, soon evolved into
Pooh-Pooh, Poopie-Woopsie, then Pookiee Wookiee.
(Side note for Star Wars fans: My
little girl popped out with a full
head of hair like a Wookiee!)
Little did I know that pooh, as
in HER poo, would become the
bane of our existence.
After she was diagnosed
with Pervasive Development

Disorder (PPD-NOS) at 18
months, and enrolled in a
special needs school, the
question was posed about
potty training. I was stupefied. Potty training? How
were we supposed to navigate
that?
I voraciously bought books,
Googled, consulted with family, friends and her teachers
about how to strategize her
potty training. Fancying myself as the legendary French
military general Napolon
Bonaparte, I concocted the
master plan: All we had to
do is exercise control over
her bowel movements. Little
did I know what was looming
ahead.
Strategy 1: Plaster the entire
floor with plastic sheets. Keep
her naked from the bottom
down. When she postures that
she needs to go, just direct her
to the bathroom. Disaster! She
would go on herself, and giggle while I was chasing her. It
is not a happy moment when
you slip and fall in your childs
excrement.
Strategy 2: Create a potty schedule by timing her
bowel movements, setting
up appointed times for toilet
breaks. As she sat on the toilet, I would painstakingly sit
in front of her, counting the
minutes, praying for her to
go. Of course, she wouldnt.
Maybe I confused her when
I repeatedly asked, Does
my Pooh need to make a poo
poo or a pee pee? One time
I fell asleep, and the little imp
hopped off the toilet, ran into
her bedroom and pooed behind the door!

The Rockaway Times

Strategy 3: Create bathroom
signs with arrows pointing to
the toilet. I posted signs and
arrows all over the house to
guide her to the toilet. Success? Nope. My little girl
ripped them down and tried to
flush them down the toilet.
The fragrant aroma of our
childrens excrement is definitely a jolt to the olfactory
organs. On one occasion, her
poor aunt vomited when she
inhaled the poo-rific masterpiece our budding artist made
in her bedroom. Our artist
extraordinaire
elaborately
smeared her poo on the walls.
By the time she was six, I became despondent.
A simple trip to the grocery
would be a stressful event.
One would think she guzzled
the entire Jamaica Bay by how
soaked her diaper would be.
I would enviously observe
younger children who would
exclaim, Mummy, I have to
go potty.
Admittedly, I have to give her
Dad the full credit for our potty
training success. His strategy,
Cease and Desist. We simply
would no longer use diapers,
and patiently train her to go
to the bathroom. I remember
thinking, Is he crazy? Who is
going to clean up the mess?
However, he has the patience
of Job and steadfastly stayed
the course.
As poignantly expressed by
Napolon, Victory belongs to
the most persevering. Today,
we are proud to declare victory in the Battle of the Bowels,
though there are some quirks.
In my mums house there are
three toilets, where in each
my daughter would make little
deposits as if to express toilet
equity.
I dont talk about autism for
sympathy or pity. My desire is
to open doors into the reality
of our lives as caregivers, and
build understanding, tolerance and growth of our artistic children.
Please do share your
thoughts and stories by emailing me at ourartisticchild@
outlook.com. I would love
your feedback! Also please
reach out if you are interested in attending the Rockaway
Beach Artistic" Families support group.

ARVERNE

Continued from Page 3

way Brewing Company back to
Rockaway, the guys finally found
a perfect opportunity within the
Beach 72nd Street space that was
once an EMS depot. The space
officially opened as RBCs new
home in July 2016.
Pull up a chair at the bar or
have a seat at a picnic table
and try one of their eight locally-made beers on tap, or perhaps a wine or cider. People
from around the peninsula are
starting to do so. Its a good atmosphere, co-owner Burnett
said. This space really speaks
to the community. Theres a
really diverse crowd from uptown, downtown, sidetown.
Everyone comes together here,
which is unique for Rockaway. I
feel that a lot of establishments
are pretty specific to a certain
crowd, but because of our location and what we do, it brings a
diverse group together into this
big space where you can meet
other people and have a really
relaxed experience. Currently,
the brewery is just used as a taproom but the long-term plan is
to relocate operations from LIC,
where the beer is still currently
produced, to the Rockaway location. The taproom will stay open.
This is a great addition to the
neighborhood and were excited
to have a local place to go to all
year round, longtime Arverne
resident Glenn DiResto said.
Rockaway Brewing Company
also helps other local small businesses through cross promotion.
They dont serve food, but have
welcomed outside vendors like
Last Dragon Pizza, Naes Italian
Ices, Goodys, and most recently, their new neighbor, Whitney

Whitney Aycock's Ole Man Chill

Aycock of the former Whits End.
Go further down Beach 72nd
street and make a left on Thursby
Avenue to the marina, where inside youll find Aycocks new spot
Ole Man Chill. Through owning
a boat at the marina for nearly a
decade, Aycock established himself and found peace within the
quiet area, where he opened a
new venture in the middle of the
summer. The discreet location
is as simple as can be with laidback seating outside of a shack,
but its value is found within Aycocks notable cuisine featuring
grilled items like his f*ing good
burger and plenty of fish he often catches himself, plus the
good conversation held between
fishermen and friends. Ive created amazing friendships in that
boatyard. Its not about generating revenue there. Theres value
in people, Aycock said. I like
that the area has more of a neighborhood feel than commercial
lots. I like that its a shack. Its like
living on the bayou, here with a
shack thats close enough to the
world, but far enough away from
it. It's where everybody gets that
old man chill, a place that emits
that vibe where you just let go

of everything thats aggravating.

Theres just an ease of conversation, a sense of comfort and
being outside is a huge plus,
Aycock said. Since the spot is
outdoors, hours depend on the
weather, but Aycock says hell
keep it open for a while until he
puts his full concentration on
the new Whits End opening this
month at Riis Park.
Arverne will have even more
chill when Buddhist Insights
starts offering their free meditation courses at their potential new home on the corner of
Beach 68th and Thursby Ave-

Page 45
nue.Earlier this week, they announced that the site may be the
future home for classes. They're
in the process of raising funds
at WWW.YOUCARING.COM/
BUDDHISTINSIGHTS.
Local real estate agents see
even more happening for the
area in the future. There's going to be a lot of appreciation
and value in this area over the
next few years. On the north
side of the freeway you have this
nice area where people dont
realize there are all these nice,
older homes, Maureen Walsh
of Walsh Properties said. Commercial space, however, is limited. Theres very little room for
commercial space and this little
hotspot is starting to get gobbled up by people in the area,
she said. However, she does see
the potential for a 3,600 squarefoot warehouse space across
from Amstel Auto on Beach 74th
Street thats going for $750,000.
It could make another excellent
brewery or small manufacturing
site, Walsh said.
From beers to burgers to Buddhism, Arverne could just be
next hip spot in Rockaway.

REQUEST FOR RELEASE OF FUNDS

On or about October 24, 2016, the New York State Homes & Community Renewal, through the New York State
Housing Trust Fund Corporation (HTFC), will submit a request to the U. S. Department of Housing and Urban
Development (HUD) for the release of Risk Sharing funds under Section 542(c) of the Housing and Community
Development Act of 1992, in accordance with section 288 (42 U.S.C. 12838), to undertake a project known as Ocean
Bay Bayside Estates, for purposes of rehabilitation, flood and resiliency measures of 24 New York Housing
Authority buildings totaling 1,395 units in the Arverne-Edgemere area on the Rockaway Peninsula, Bayside Queens,
New York.

FINDING OF NO SIGNIFICANT IMPACT

HTFC has determined that the project will have no significant impact on the human environment. Therefore, an
Environmental Impact Statement under the National Environmental Policy Act of 1969 (NEPA) is not required.
Additional project information is contained in the Environmental Review Record (ERR) on file at

ENVIRONMENTAL CERTIFICATION

HTFC certifies to HUD that Ms. Heather Spitzberg, Esq. in her capacity as Certifying Officer consents to accept the
jurisdiction of the Federal Courts if an action is brought to enforce responsibilities in relation to the environmental

big goal. It wasnt our goal

to get rich. It was to be close
with the members of the
community and to give back
and build a restaurant that
the community wanted to
be in, Brooke said. We just
had our first year anniversary
and we did a year in review.
We noticed that we got away
from our mission statement.
When we opened Community
House our mission statement
was to give the community a
place that felt like home. We
got so caught up in running a
business and putting systems
in place that we drifted away
from our goal.
To get back to that goal, the
Community House started
to involve neighbors in the
redesign of the menu. We
wanted to give the community what they wanted. So
we decided to run a contest
and asked the community to
give us menu and bar item
suggestions. If the applicant
won, their name would be on
the menu item. It was a huge
success. Although we kept
our most popular items, we
now have a menu that was
made by the community and
for the community, Brooke
said. When it came to selecting the new items, there
were four criteria including
being a comfort food, being
an item the neighborhood
would enjoy, and something
that is both high quality and
affordable. Among the new
items are Randis Chicken Pot
Pie, Maureens Shepherds
Pie, Vickys Lemon Chicken,
Barbaras Bolognese, Carlos Seared Tuna, Joannes
Pumpkin Risotto, plus plenty of appetizers, flatbreads,
sandwiches, soups, salads,
steaks and more. The new
items replaced old menu
items that werent selling as
well. So far, the new menu
is a hit. On Saturday, we
didnt have one chair open
from 6:30 p.m. until 11:30
p.m. and it got nothing but
rave reviews. So far everyone
is loving the menu, Brooke
said.
While the menu may be
brand
new,
Community

House started to roll out other

changes earlier this year, especially in staffing. Cooking
up the new menu is Moose
Amadou, formerly from the
fine dining restaurant, The
Capital Grille. Amaduo became the new head chef in
early summer. Hes been the
best thing to ever happen to
us, outside of the new management staff, Brooke said.
We found that things werent coming out of the kitchen quickly, so we organized
the kitchen system so that the
food comes out fast and it is
bar none. Much like the Capital Grille, where theres high
volume and high quality, and
the food happens to be both,
Brooke said.
Along with the food, theres
been a change in the bar system as well. As of Memorial
Day weekend, there has been
a new bar manager, Corey
Diaz. Diaz had also worked
in the building when it was
still the Irish Circle, so he had
plenty on insight into what
worked and didnt work at the
bar. We wanted to marry the
old with the new and incorporate what used to be done
along with where we want
to go in the future, Brooke
said. Having someone so
seasoned and experienced
in this business brought the
bar to another level. Diaz
is instrumental in planning
special events at the bar like
football Sundays and the
bars holiday parties. Brooke
says Diaz helped streamline
the bar menu, come up with
new, affordable pricing and
hes ensuring that buybacks
are part of the system. We
changed the system of the bar
and weve started to see more
people on the weekends and
everything has been good,
Diaz said.
All of the new changes are
being overseen and implemented by a brand new general manager. Rockaway local Rebeka Perkins took over
as manager around July 4
weekend. She brings with her
several years of both restaurant and management experience. Her goal as manager
is to be what the community
needs. Obviously we want
to fill seats and get the sales,

Page 47

but we also want to do more

community outreach and
really be an integral part of
what goes on here in Rockaway, she said. Brooke says
Perkins was a great fit for the
job. We chose Rebeka because we needed someone
who was professional and
who would help put better
systems in place. Rebeka is
extremely polished and organized and shes a local girl,
which is important to us.
The customers love her and
the restaurant is running extremely smoothly under her
management, Brooke said.
Perkins is also the event coordinator for the establishment and wants to make the
Community House the go to
spot for all functions. We
want to be the place that
people think of when planning events. Whatever people have in mind, we want
to be able to fit into what
theyre looking for, Perkins
said. Brooke says Perkins
has already done a great job
on the event side. Rebeka
has really turned our events

around here. We have a 300

person wedding booked,
were getting a lot of corporate events and engagement
parties, were already having
people book their communion parties in May. In the last
two weekends, we had eight
parties here. We have such
a flexible space here and
can host any type of event,
Brooke said.
All are encouraged to check
out all that is new at the Community House. We worked
on all of the weaknesses
that we identified in the first
year. They say that it takes 18
months for a new restaurant
to settle in and get the systems in place. I am pleased
that it only took us 10-12
months to get organized, recognize weaknesses and make
changes, she said.
Community House is located at 101-19 Rockaway Beach
Boulevard. Theyre open from
noon to closing on weekdays
and 10:30 a.m. until closing
on weekends. For more information, call 347-619-9417.

Creating NY Arbors Fall Show

By Dan Guarino

Youve passed that brightly colored building at 114-07

Rockaway Beach Boulevard
lots of times. The one with the
grinning Rockaways Playland
clown over the door.
But whats inside that New
York Arbor Gallery? In a word,
creativity.
Since opening last March,
the small storefront gallery
and its founder/curator/owner George Turner have been
adding their own spin to Rockaways growing art scene. Celebrating the seasons they have
now opened their third exhibition. Featuring 11 different
artists the Fall Show exhibition
runs through November 17.
Gallery hours are weekends
from 12 to 5 p.m. and by appointment during the week.
Within its space the new New
York Arbor show highlights
bright paintings, small but
evocative paper and shadow
sculptures, stained glass, textile works and even furniture.
Many of the artists on view
are local or from nearby. The
full Fall Show roster includes
Linda Brandwein, Marna
Chester, Mike Doyle, Anthony
Hannon, Maureen OLeary,
Renee B. Radenberg, Amanda Ratner, John Russo, Christopher Saucedo, Pablo Tauler
and Pamela Williams.
The opening was great,
Turner said. We had ten of the
artists here. People were excited, motivated, inspired. He
also noted that it couldnt have
been more perfect that the
date of the exhibition launch
was also his birthday.
Turner himself is an artist,
self-taught and mostly working
in wood. He has set up a compact but well-tooled workshop
just beyond the gallery space.
Hes happy to show his ingenious and artistic furniture designs. It is both a starting point
and an outgrowth of his art,
which he says leans to the conceptual.
Part of this can be seen in the
exhibition area itself, where
he has worked in the idea of
moveable walls. Although they

appear permanent, they can

be rearranged to reshape the
space as needed.
The gallery too is a concept
that has grown. What I have
learned and experienced since
opening has been part of this
whole evolving idea.
Like his mission poem states
New York Arbor is an artists-run space. (It) is an ongoing call for those inspired by the
natural world, those obsessed
with the wonder of it all.
Weve been out here almost
ten years now, he said about
his familys time in Rockaway.
He had also worked with other galleries and spaces across
the city, and had a workshop in
Brooklyn.
This place, he said, motioning around the gallery, came
into my life a month before my
lease expired at the other.
Like many he too had passed
it often. Especially after Hurricane Sandy, he said, I remember looking at that clown
and this Armageddon view all
around it and wanting to do
something.

I wanted to bring something

light here. The space is open
and pliable inside. Ive wanted
to do something like this since
forever.
Everything came together
and we were able to buy this
space, which is amazing!
There was a lot of clearing, cleaning and internal rebuilding once Turner moved
in in September of last year.
But eventually he was able to
open to the public in March,
2016.
This summer it was great,
with everyone coming to Rockaway. It was amazing to be part
of that, along with the Rockaway Beach Surf Club, Topless
gallery, the Rockaway Artists
Alliance, MoMA PS1 and Klaus
Biesenbach. To be part of this
wonderful creative thing (including) the food and the music and the events. Its wonderful!
Art means so many different things to so many different
people. Its something to pursue as an individual and then
involve others in a collective.

It certainly has shown through the quality and effect of

the work he has been showing.
Its really been beautiful just
to be a part of this, be able to
see Rockaway developing like
this. And have all of it blossoming all over the spectrum. To
see so many different venues
offer so much creative work. Its
sopro-creativity!
Turner shows a large piece
of clear crystal resting near a
gallery window, glistening like
its own work of art. It was a gift
from a woman who found that
her home and heart were truly
in Rockaway.
Part of a larger piece, it broke
off during the move. She decided the crystalline rock had
not fractured; it had instead
become something new and
different. So she shared it with
New York Arbor.
There is a natural energy
here that begets expression,
Turner said.
Thats what I love about
Rockaway. Every day is a new
beginning.

Rockaway: Then And Now

Fitzgeralds was the place to be for many
years. The photo taken from the boardwalk
at Beach 108th Street was taken in the late
1960s. The most recent shot shows the
condos which have sprung up in its place.
