Homework Chapter 6C

1. Predict whether or not precipitation would occur if 150 cm3 of 0.10 mol dm-3 BaCl2 are mixed with 50.0 cm3 of
0.050 mol dm-3 NaF solution. The Ksp of BaF2 is 1.70 x 10-16 mol3 dm-9
2. The solubility product of calcium sulphate at room temperature is 6.0 x 10 -5 mol2dm-6. Calculate the mass of CaSO4
precipitated when 125 cm3 of 1.00 mol dm-3 Ca(NO3)2 are mixed at room temperature.
3. Ksp for Zn(OH)2 at 298K is 1.0x 10-17 mol3 dm-9. Calculate the maximum mass of Zn(OH)2 that can be dissolved in
250 cm3 of water at 298K.
4. Determine whether a precipitate will be formed in the following experiment:
a) 25cm3 of 1.0 x 10-5 mol dm-3 silver nitrate is added to 25cm3 of 1.0 x 10-5 mol dm-3 sodium chloride.
[Ksp of AgCl = 1.0 x 10-10 mol2 dm-6]
b)

50cm3 of 0.025 mol dm-3 solution of MnSO4 is added to 50cm3 of 0.05 mol dm-3 solution of ammonia.
[Ksp of Mn(OH)2 = 2.0 x 10-13 mol3 dm-9]
[Kb of NH3 = 1.8 x 10-5 mol dm-3]

5. Calculate the mass of sodium ethanedioate, Na 2C2O4 that needs to be added to 250cm3 of 2.2 x 10-3 mol dm-3 solution
of Ca(NO3)2 before a precipitate is formed. [Ksp of CaC2O4 = 2.27 x 10-9 mol2 dm-6]
6. 500cm3 of 0.1M solution of MgCl2 is added to 500cm3 of 0.2M solution of Na2CO3. Calculate the maximum mass of
MgCO3 precipitate. [Ksp of MgCO3 = 1.0 x 10-5 mol2 dm-6]
