A dynamometer or dyno for short is a device used for measuring the torque and brake power

required to operate a driven machine.the power produced by an engine, motor or other

rotating prime mover can be calculated by simultaneously measuring torque and rotational
speed (RPM)
The main components of a dynamometer are:

Base Provides a stable platform where all components are mounted.

Pedestals Provides support and transfers static and rotational forces to the base.

Collection Box Collects the coolant discharged from the dynamometer after usage.

Rotor (Shaft) The rotating element that is turned by the unit being tested.

Stator (Housing) Encases and supports the rotor. Also assists in cooling.

Lubrication System (Pump, Tubing etc.) Provides lubrication and cooling for rotor
bearing assemblies.

Load Cell Provides a calibrated output that is usually measured as torque.

Power Absorption Dynamometers:-measure and absorb the power output of the engine to
which they are coupled. The power absorbed is usualy dissipated as heat by some means.
Examples are Prony brake dynamometer, Rope brake dynamometer, Eddy current
dynamometer, Hydraulic dynamometer.
Power Transmission Dynamometers: In power transmission dynamometers the
power is transmitted to the load coupled to the engine after it is indicated on some type
of scale. These are also called torque meters.
