EXON ERE BASIC PRACTICE {his BP is approprfite for attachmont to inquiry or Purchase Document) rr] 12 13 an 22 *23 PRESSURE VESSELS GUC ‘Changes shown By ¢ ‘SCOPE This Basic Practice covers mandatory requirements governing the design, fabrication, and inspection of unticed Pressure vessels, including all waste heat bolers. ‘Small commercial vessels which are not part of process equipment such as sandblast machines, paint sprayers land gunite machines shall be per manutacturer’s standards. ‘An asterisk (*) indicates that a decision by the purchaser is required, or that additional information is furnished by the purchaser. ‘SUMMARY OF ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS. ‘This Basic Practice permits design of pressure vessels under the provisions of ASME Code Section VIII, Division 1 ‘or Division 2, or recognized codes of other nations, Fabrication, inspection, and testing requirements shall be based, as a minimum, on ASME Code Section Vill Division 1 plus the additional requrements of this Basic Practice, However, if the design is based on Division 2, fabrication, inspection, and testing shall be based on Division 2 plus the additional requirements of this Basic Practice Pressure vessels may be constructed under the provisions of a code which is accepted by the authorities where the ‘vessolis to be located and by Owner's Engineer. However, fabrication, inspection, and testing shal, as a minimum, meet the requirements of ASME Code Section Vill, Division 1, of this Basic Practice, and BPS-1-2 as applicable, Table 1 lists the Basic Practices and code which shall be used with this Basic Practice. DEFINITIONS Vessel thickness is dofined as the thickness required for strength of the pressure vessel shell, including corrosion allowance, but excluding weld overlay, ining, integral cladding or non-intogral parts. The following terms, used in relation to allowable stresses, are defined as follows: 4. Guaranteed tensile strength is the minimum tensile strength for the base material, deposited weld metal and weldmonts, as guaranteed by the vessel fabricator. b. Guaranteed yleld strength is the minimum yield strength (0.2% offset for the base material, deposited weld metal and weldments, as guaranteed by the vessel fabricator. ©. Creep and rupture. MATERIALS Materials shall bo por ASME Code Section Vill or their pormissible substitutes per BP18-1-1. Proposals to use any other materials shall be submitted to purchaser for approval by Owner's Engineer Material production shall be by the electric furnace, basic oxygen, or open hearth processes. Proposals to use materials having a specified maximum tensile strength greater than 90,000 psi (620 MPa) at room temperature shall be submitted to purchaser for approval by the Owner's Engineer. For vessels in hydrogen service, extemal welded attachments, and at least an 18 in. (450 mm) course of al skirts, shall be of the Same nominal chemistry as the material used for the vessel Proposals to use alternative materials shall be submitted to purchaser for approval by Owner's Engineer. DESIGN DESIGN REQUIREMENTS 61 62 63 All vessels, except spheres, operating above 1 psig (7.0 kPa) shall have a minimum design pressure of 16 psig (110 kPa), Vessels for vacuum service, including those in which a vacuum may be created inadvertently, shall be designed for an external prossure differental of 15 psi (103 kPa) or an external pressure differential 25% greater than the maximum design value, whichever is less. For purposes of determining the applicability of BPS-1-2, thickness is defined as the thickness “as ordered”, provided the plates actually supplied meet the ASTM tolerances on thickness (weigh!) Vessels containing circulating suspensions of solids in fluids (luid-solids processes) shall be subjected to additional horizontal loadings per BP4-1-4. During erection, start-up, or operation, al! applicable loads shall be considered as acting simultaneously, including either wind or earthquake, whichever governs. During hydrostatic testing, wind load (wind pressure) equivalent to a 95 mph (16 m/s) wind speed shall be considered acting simultaneously with the hydrostatic test load. FABRICATION 8.1 Tolerances shall be per Figure 1. Vessels that will contain cartridge or pedestal tray assemblies shall be checked with a template to ensure that aeeassemblies can be inserted ane withdrawn without interference or binding. The diameter of the template shall be no smaller than the specified 10 of the vessel minus 1/4 in. (6 mm). 82 Maximum angle of head skirt. The straight skit portion of a head may be conical to a maximum angle of 5 degrees fom the longitudinal axis of the vessel, in order to compensate for a dimensional difference between a head diameter and the vessel shell diameter. 83 Vessel marking or nameplate shall be as required by the ASME Code Section Vill. Where this code is not mandatory, the code symbol shall be omitted. 6.4 For vessels in alkaline service, markings shall not be stamped directly on the vessel after postweld heat treatment, Bat may be placed on a plate welded to the vessel before postweld heat treatment. "65 Inwet H,S service, carbon steel used for vessels that are not fully ined shall meet the following requirements: a. Ail pressure containing components fabricated of plato shall be manufactured and tested per par. 9.23 for Tesistance to Hydrogen Induced Cracking. The steel shall be supplied in the normalized condition. c._ The fabricated vessel shall be PWHT. The PWHT procedure outined in the ASME Code Section Vill, par, UW- 20. Ultrasonic examination and acceptance criteria shall be per the ASME Code Section Vill Dvision 1, Appendix 2 WELD QUALITY CONTROL mt » 912 913 ona 915 016 Detective welds. in the opinion of the Inspector, welds fall to moot applicable acceptance criteria, they shall be repaired using an approved repair welding procedure. Each ropair shall be re-inspected using the original Inspection method, or an equivalent method approved by the Inspector. For vessels or sections of vessels where buttwelded seams are 100% radiographed, all other pressure containing welds and all attachment welds to pressure containing parts shall be examined as follows ‘&. Welded joints covered by reinforcing pads shall be 100% radiographed prior to installation ofthe reinforcing pad. b. Support skirt and lifting lug welds, and pressure containing wolds other than butt joint, shall be examined by the ultrasonic method using either the straight beam or shear wave modo. Alternate inspection methods, such as in-process magnetic particle examination, may be substituted if approved by the Owner's Engineer. ¢. Allattachment welds to pressure containing parts on materials other than P1, Groups 1 and 2, shall be ‘examined by the magnetic particle method. If the material is non-magnetic, the liquid penetrant inspection ‘method shall be used in place of the magnetic particle method. Accessible welds subject to PWHT shall be inspected after PWHT. 4. Aillocations of temporary attachment welds on materials other than P1, Groups 1 and 2, shall be inspected per Par. 9.12¢. Wt 100% radiography Is not specified, spot radiographs shall be made as follows: For cylindrical vessels, one spot shall be examined in each circumferential joint, and in each longitudinal joint between adjacent circumferential joints, at locations designated by the Inspector. b. For spherical vessels, a spot radiograph shall be taken at each wold intersection, and one for each 20 ft (6 m) ‘of weld seam, at locations designated by the Inspector.
