MEDIA RELEASE: 10 October 2016

Dubbo digital media creatives feature in Artlands Festival program

A new digital media art work has been created in Dubbo over the past two years with the aim of
debuting in the city at Artlands 2016 at the end of this month, October 27-30.
Dubbo multi-media artist, Kim V. Goldsmith has worked closely with a small team of local
creatives over the past six months on a digital media work that is part of the four-day festival
program, running alongside the national regional arts conference.
The idea for the work titled Volucres first took shape in 2014, with Goldsmith spending the past
18 months working towards finishing it in time for the Artlands festival.
Wanting to push the boundaries of my digital media and installation works, I had long wanted to
see if my sound recordings of native birds could be turned into music, despite not having a much
of a talent for music myself.
Initially I worked with a choral composer from Sydney and a local choir to workshop and write a
work inspired by my recordings, photos and writings, explained Goldsmith.
While we got to a point where we had a score and the choir performed a short version of the
work, a range of complications arose not the least of which was a lack of funding to continue
developing the work with so many people involved at one point we had over 100 people
developing concepts for the work.
Goldsmith says after exploring a range of options to keep the original work on track, by April this
year she had to make a decision to start again with a new, local creative team to help her bring
her vision to fruition.
It was a really difficult time and I had to pull back from the work for a couple of months before
revisiting my original vision and reworking budgets in the process.
I was fortunate to receive funding from Artlands at this point, which has helped offset much of
the production work required to see the new version of the concept come to lifeits been an
expensive work to produce.
Its hard to find people who are on the same page, have the skill sets I need and can share my
creative vision, but Ive also been extremely lucky to find two local creatives to work with who are
completely in sync with what Ive wanted to achieve.
Wez Thompson of Hot Trax Recording Studios, and video producer, Peter Aland have worked
with Goldsmith to develop what is a five-minute soundscape and three-channel video on loop.
Inspired by the symbolism and sentinel role of birds, Volucres layers piano chords and hard
edged synth with Goldsmiths native birdsong recordings and sound effects, all accompanied by
large-scale abstracted, monochromatic, avian-inspired movements of murmurations, unfolding
wingspans and other natural elements.
Volucres will show at Holy Trinity Hall in Brisbane Street Dubbo from 12 noon 5.00pm each day
of the Artlands Festival. Free entry.
