FIRST WORDS

Lance Mountain, 51 years old and still getting street clips.

ow more than ever, skateboarding is an all

ages show. As skateboarding ages gracefully
into his fth decade or so, the range in age of
skaters that are really pushing skateboarding is
so wide that its not hard to nd seven-year-old
kids frontside boardsliding handrails and guys in or
close to their 50s still doing McTwists. And while Im
impressed with the kiddos out there doing amazing
tricks in their size two Vans, its the old guys that Im
truly blown away by. As Im getting into my early
40s, I frequently wonder how far could I go. How
long can I keep doing real tricks and progressing?
Even back in my early 30s, I was already tripping out
thinking it would only have to be slappys from here
on out. I never really thought that you could keep
the re of progression burning well past your 40s

TWSKATE.COM

and 50s. But from Tony Hawk, Steve Caballero, Chris

Miller to Lance Mountain, there are countless more
guys in this demographic that Im over looking, that
are still progressing and holding onto the tricks they
did as teenagers. And its blowing my mind. Just
as those guys were trailblazers as kids and doing
things that no one before them had, here they are
still pushing the boundaries of what is known to
be and shattering all expectations.
And for me, it boils down to Lance Mountain. My
childhood hero and now my grownass man hero. At
51 years old, he just put out one of the best parts
of the year and of his career in Nike SBs Chronicles
3. A part that easily holds up against skaters half
his age. While his transition tricks are epic, its
his street tricks that really take it to another level

MARCH 2016

for me. Getting those old bones up on frontside

boardslides or kickipping over a picnic table at
that age is remarkable. Its just proof that its all
there for the taking. You just gotta want it. And
Lance wants it, as many of us do and generations
to come.
Dont let age get in the way of your
skateboarding. Its just a number. Theres a great
quote from Satchel Paige that goes, Age is a
question of mind over matter. If you dont mind, it
doesnt matter. Quit caring how old you are and
come join us on the ride, wont you?

GET PICKLED
Andrew Wilson is steadily getting real
good. And Alltimers gear has always
been real good. These two together is
like ice and coffee.

HAPPY NYJ YEAR

Nike SB announced the young millionaire
on its roster in a series of IGs on New
Years Eve. In other Swoosh news, Jason
Hernandez has moved on from making
videos for SB, so expect some new things
this year.

BLACKBERRIES AND BLUE BALLS

Andrew Browns erotic skate ction
novel, None Of The Bad Ones, took more
well-read skate heads by storm in the
fall. For sordid tales of NYC skaters and
Blackberry-facilitated hook-ups, head
over to esfbooks.com and get a copy.

GIRLS, GIRLS, GIRLS

For the rst time ever, weve added a
female category to the TWS Awards. When
we launched the Readers Choice polls online, the ladies got more votes than almost
any other category. Girl power.

BS WITH TG AND MAX

Max Schaaf is the real deal. From raising
kids on his block in Oakland to being
appreciative to still skate, this ones a
must-see.

DGK X QUARTERSNACKS SWEATPANTS

At press time, we dont know much about
this collab, but when the Snackman, Dane
Vaughn, and Wade Desarmo are involved
in a collab, its as good as ghetto gold!

TACO COMBO #1
Were still waiting to see if the rumors of
Guy x Koston starting a new board brand
are true and whether or not they pick up
Antonio Durao and Miles Silvas.

INNOCENT UNTIL PROVEN SCUMMY

Landscape dropped a promo titled Escapes
thats a tribute to Chris Massey. Well worth
a watch. You remember Portraits, right? A
year in waiting, Bleach dropped from Paul
Young with banging parts from Josh Wilson, Dick Rizzo, and more. The Tennyson
Corporations Goldsh outtakes montage
was a sight to behold for us 90s heads.

LurkNYCs Cee-Lo was a 24-minute jaunt

through Gotham with various skate rats
we know and love. Desert Crew dropped
Funky Child, our favorite Euros with cameos
from Wes Kremer and Evan Smith. Brandon
Biebel lms clips all MFn day in his park, so
his appropriately named AMFD video part
showcased some solid bangers. Then he
backed it up with a street part too! Madars
Apse dropped a new video part and colorway for DC Shoes just before Evan Smiths

trou on its underwear line, and after promoing us in the ofce a couple pairs, we can
testify to the comness! adidas released a

that costs $250. They also dropped a Traplord Adi-Ease with none other than A$AP

and Matt Bullinger from Maryland was our

or the second year in a row, we opened up our

online polls to let you call the shots. With so
much content online, and a feeling we were leaving
out some of the unsung heroes in our world at the
TWS Awards, we wanted to give nods to the best
Photo, Cover, Indie Video, and Video Check Out
of the year. These winners may not get trophies or
a trip up to the stage to get zinged by Lee Dogg,
but a shout out on the big screen at the Awards
and this page in print are denitely due.
The skateboarding community is growing, there
are so many of you out there hustling with dreams
of shooting the next TransWorld cover, or making
the next TransWorld video (okay, maybe Johnny
Wilsons not concerned with that but thats kinda
what makes him awesome). Heres who came out

Andrew Peters captured this behemoth nosegrind of Shecks down under during a Sheckler

obsession to shoot a Louie Barletta cover all incamera. Quite the feat.
The amount of footage Johnny Wilson and New
Yorks Most Productive Crew put out in 2015 was
staggering. Sure was the cream of the crop.
Victor Aceves Video Check Out was a straight
up gnarly video part that even had Guy Mariano
congratulating him in Instagram.
Thanks to everyone who voted, we truly appreciate you letting us know whats up! 2016 is going to

DAMN AM
OF THE YEAR

YO S H I TA N EN B AU M

HOPFENSPERGER

Half-Cab kickip. Berlin, Germany.

oshi Tanenbaum is a freak. Theres something

not quite right about what he can do on a
skateboard. That kickip back tail pop out over the
stairs at Pulaski being just one example. Another
is the way he absolutely manhandled the 2015
Damn Am Series, stringing together mind blowing
lines at parks from coast to coast. Laser down the
stairs? Yep. Blunt kickip? Got that easy. Massive
kickip fakie carving backside over a huge channel?
Nooooooooo problem. Again and again, thats
how Yoshi does it.

44 | TWS

Last year for the rst time, winning Damn Am

of the Year would come with the added bonus of
an invite to skate the 2016 SLS Pro Open and a
shot at qualifying onto the Pro Tour. Hungry ams
responded accordingly, going on a contest feeding frenzy, skating as many Damn Am stops as they
could get to, from LA to New York and everywhere
in between. With a skaters best two nishes determining their nal standing youd think that Yoshis
Atlanta and NYC wins would have been enough to
get the job done, but after six stops there were still

MARCH 2016

four other skaters right at his heels. So Yoshi went to

the nal stop out at Woodward West with the goal
of hanging on to his lead, and a good thing he did.
There he blazed through his repertoire of signature
moves and still barely edged out Dashawn Jordan
for another 1st place nish. The win was his third
of the Series and cemented his claim to Damn Am
of the Year honors. So with that, Yoshi is headed to
the Pro Open. If he can keep it going, the current
SLS pros are about to meet their match. PAUL ZITZER

MY WORST FEAR AT THE TIME

WAS HAVING TO GET KNEE
SURGERY, SO I SAID, F**K
THAT, AND I WENT INTO SELFHEALING; PHYSICALLY AND
EMOTIONALLY.

How you been? Remember that time you

almost killed Sheckler when you ran into him
at the San Clemente skatepark?
Haha, oh yeah. That was crazy. We ran into each
other after I did a backside noseblunt slide there.
But yeah, Im good. Im out in LA for the winter but
I was skating a lot in New York.
How old are you now and where are you from
originally?
Im 24. I was born in Brazil but I moved to the
States when I was about three or four. So, Im
mostly a New Yorker but I still got Portuguese
somewhere in my brain. When I was living down
there again recently, it was good to relearn my
native language.
So, lets get into that story of you going back
to Brazil because I met you back in 2010-ish
when you were on Chocolate ow and then all
of a sudden you disappeared.
Yeah, I was totally pursuing skating around that
time but I had some severe knee pains since I was
about 13 years old and they kept getting worse.
Then in the winter of 2011, the pain became so
unbearable that I went back to Brazil where my
mom was because she has a couple of properties
I could live on. But she wanted me to try and see a
doctor there because she trusts the doctors down
there more. Were naturalists so she didnt want
to deal with Western doctors anyway. My worst
fear at the time was having to get knee surgery,
so I said, Fuck that, and I went into self-healing;
physically and emotionally. I was looking into
a lot of things that I was escaping from through
skateboarding. I was living in such a small bubble
of skateboarding, I think that life needed to crack
me open and show me more to it.
Thats a heavy journey for a young dude.
It was the best thing to ever happen to me. For a
while though, I had the idea that I was going to live
there and cultivate what we had as far as our land
that my mom owned. I kind of thought it would be
healthier for me to maybe move on from skating
and look into other things even though that was
one of the hardest thoughts for me at the time.
So, I was escaping so many things including my
knee pains. It was something I never looked at
and it made me question my entire life because I
was so involved with skating. I had all of my eggs
in one basket and then over night it changed
and I couldnt skate anymore. Everything hit me.
That included following through with skating as a
career and thinking if that was the best thing for
me. And I saw how life was putting me in another
environment for me to learn. So I tried to move

YA J E P O P S O N

on from it for a while; I picked up guitar, I picked

up painting, I even got into permaculture which
is the science of sustainability and living off the
land through planting your own food. I picked up
all of these things to help maintain my loss, my
broken heart from quitting skateboarding. I even
got heavily into meditation and yoga. And I cant
forget the countless psychedelics I took.
Were you doing all of this with your mom?
Is she your spiritual guide?
Well, my mom is quite an inner beauty consultant
but no one can heal you but you. Long story short,
I was born into a religion, Santo Daime. Its an
Amazonian religion that combines the Christian
religion along with other regional shamanism

amongst other things, and they like to use the

ayahuasca beverage which is a sacred beverage
from the amazon that Im actually named after.
Yaje is the original name of ayahuasca. Thats
the psychedelics I was talking about. It was just
another thing I needed to return to my roots
and was one of the best things Ive ever done. It
denitely helped me face all the difcult things I
was facing at the time. Felt like I was nally home.
Did your knee heal up during this time?
Yeah, that was part of the spiritual healing. The
physical pain is only a physical manifestation of
whats happening inside you.

YA J E P O P S O N

Whoa, youre getting deep, son.

I dont think it was just a mechanical issue. So, the
medicine helped me see outside of my little
bubble of skateboarding and heal those parts of me
that needed xing. Meanwhile, nding enthusiasm
outside of skating with other hobbies. Like, I used
to be depressed on rainy days because I couldnt
skate, now I love rainy days. I needed to mature to
deserve what was coming in skating, maybe.

I NEEDED TO MATURE
TO DESERVE WHAT
WAS COMING IN
SKATING, MAYBE.

Did you spend the whole three years or so

down there healing? When did you decide to
come back to the states?
Yeah, that took about two and a half years and
it wasnt easy giving up skating. Once a skater,
always a skater. It kind of shows you your values.
But I came back. It was also good for me to
experience my rst girlfriend, who came to visit
me in Brazil and eventually we came back to
New York together and I got back into skating. I
realized quickly that I needed physical strength
for skating so I got into hot yoga. It provided the
environment for me to stretch and strengthen
without pain. After months of doing that, I realized
I could have a session without pain. Its not 100%,
but its still getting better and feels good.
So, no operations at all?
Not at all, just higher awareness. I think a lot of
my knee pain came from being a kid and not
taking care of my body. Now, its important for
me to warm up my body and have a healthy diet.
Skaters usually eat like shit, so I tried to clean up
my diet and went vegetarian. I usually cook for
myself everyday as well.
When you came back, were you accepted
right back into the NYC skate scene?
Yeah, I kept in touch with my homies while I was
gone, so it was all good. I got lonely down in Brazil
living by myself. It was good to come back and see
everyone but I realized I felt liberated in the sense
of I love you but I dont need you, kind of vibe.
You then came out to LA soon after your return
and lmed your whole Sk8Rats part out here
that came out this year, right?
Yeah, so I was back skating for a bit and broke my
ankle at Chelsea park in New York. Just a couple of
months back in. Something simple got me. Then
I came out to California fresh off a broken ankle
and lmed that part. They say it was lmed in three
weeks but lets be honest it was more like three
months. That was the most fun video part Ive ever
lmed. I didnt care or have pressure on myself.
Yeah, it was a rad part. You even pulled out a
varial ip which can be a very controversial
trick these days.
[Laughs] I know, right. It came back. Thank God,
we get bored with all the rules of skateboarding
so you eventually have to liberate.
Are you running no-complys at all? Theyre
still so hot.
I mean, I was born doing no-complys. [laughs]

58 | TWS

Were you paying attention to skateboarding

while you were in Brazil?
I was probably watching more skate videos
than ever down there since I wasnt skating. Just
missing it so much. Keeping up with everything I
could. You cant keep the skate rat down.
What about those orange parachute pants
from the Sk8Rats part? They still in rotation?
Those are my painting pants and I just love color
especially orange, so its a must. I feel like I was
nding myself in Brazil, so Im no longer scared
to wear anything. Now, I like to have fun with my
outts. The more colorful the better.

Breakdown how you nally ended up on the

new Alien Workshop after previous runs on
Habitat and Chocolate ow.
Before I left to Brazil, I had been talking to
Brennan about getting on Habitat after Chocolate
ow fell through. That was something I wished
Id followed through with. Then when I got back
I guess I missed the boat. Alien just had started
back recently and I was already skating with
Joey Guevara and the Alien guys. Theyre great
to skate with so it just feels natural. Hopefully, we
have a chance to make Alien cool again.

You were in the intro to the Alien video

Bunker Down but not part of the team then.
What took so long?
I did have to prove to myself and build my
reputation again and that takes time. Im happy
I have the opportunity to do that now, even here
with this interview. Thank you so much.
Youre welcome. Are you working a part right
now? Intro part?
Yeah, were working on a Welcome to Alien part
and then Ive been working with Chris Mulhern
down in Philly on some stuff too.

Will you feel weird if you run into a former

Alien rider?
[Laughs] Yeah, I havent thought about it. I dont
know. Thats a good question.
What are your thoughts on Alien 2.0?
Its hard for people to accept things until they
manifest. Theyll get used to it eventually. Its not
the same, hopefully we can do it some justice.
And the new generation of kids wont remember
the old Alien, so fuck it.

Switch backside lipslide.

What are you working on further into this year?

This year I want to lm as much as possible and
really follow through with skating. What Ive
worked for my whole life, basically. Life is work.
We continue to work on ourselves. Ive come
full circle and like I said it was the best thing to
ever happen to me. Thats another reason why
Im stoked on Alien because were both trying to
make a comeback.

Ive always been a little confused by why

so many Brazilians migrate to Costa Mesa,
California. What is it about the Orange Curtain
that is inviting to such a different culture? Is
it the weather? Easy access to their sponsors
warehouse? Or maybe the health crowd that
demands breakfast ice cream (acai) like in
their homeland. Anyways, I dont have an
answer for such a question, but I will forever
be fascinated by the amount of Brazilian
legends Ive met there.

In November, Element decided to visit our extended family in

Brazil to lm, shoot photos, and do community events typical of
what youd expect from us. Weve been renting houses instead
of hotels on our trips for the past few years because the vibe is
better and we can pile in about ve extra people on the trip and
not get kicked out. I hadnt been to Brazil in 10 years, and this
trip was centered around lming in Brasiliaa place I knew almost
nothing about except that Felipe Gustavo is from there, and hes
pretty good, so the spirits were high on the location choice.

So the trip almost didnt happen. Seriously, I had

to write everyone and tell them we might have to
cancel because I neglected to get everyones visas
in time. I thought one month was a solid amount
of time. Wrong. America makes it incredibly
hard for any foreigner to visit our lovely country,
and Brazil simply returns the favor. But luckily,
knowing Scuba Steve is like having money in the
bank! Mason told him our situation, and he put
me in contact with some magical visa company
called Peninsula Visa in LA, and we were good in
three days. Im still on cloud nine from having it
work out, because I went to the embassy and was
told there is no way in hell we were able to go
given such short notice. Lesson learned.

We ew into Brasilia all hung over from pills and

sleeping remedies from the plane ride and showed up
at the house we would call home for the next nine days.
Immediately upon arrival to the property, we began to
inspect every room to decide which was better suited for
us as individuals. I made a terrible mistake: I roomed with
Mason, which is bad enough, but then my real mistake
was choosing the bedroom with the one working toilet. I
hope I dont need expand on the wait times, noises, smells,
and overall urgency associated with a house for 13 with

encouraged one another to eat more greens and such.
The house owners were there with us and were fucking
amazing, insanely welcoming and all kinds of cool. We
partied together a lot and went skating together almost
every day. Best-case scenario for sure. Love you, Mauricio!

Brasilia is amazing, straight up. Its not

crowded, it doesnt smell, theres not a lot of
poverty, its central in the country so it has a
crazy diverse population, and the spots are
cool. We would pile into a huge van every
day and skate probably ve or six spots,
which is wild with a group that large. While
we were there we met up with our DC bros
on some insane tour they were doing all
over South America. Its always nice to see
friends in other countries. We ate ceviche,
drank beers, and played dice all night
long. We also visited the forest about two
hours outside the city; the private property
we went to had a massive waterfall and
staggering pools of crystal turquoise
gem-colored water with enormous ferns
and ora I had never seen before. No real
wildlife besides huge lizards and sh, but
that day was unrealvery positive vibes

TRANSWORLD SKATEBOARDING PRESENTS

S U B S TA N C E
A VIDEO BY CHRISTOPHER THIESSEN

DOLAN STEARNS | DAVIS TORGERSON | TOM KARANGELOV | TRISTAN FUNKHOUSER | JON NGUYEN

After collaborating with Jon Holland then Oliver

Barton on Perpetual Motion and Outliers respectively,
Chris Thiessen was ready to make TWS 27th video
unreservedly his own. Deciding to lm the entire project
on VX1000his purist paintbrush of choiceand making
a conscious decision to free himself of any self-imposed
limitations as to what a TransWorld video has to be,
Thiessen embarked on a worldwide mission alongside
Davis Torgerson, Dolan Stearns, Tom K, T-Funk, and

Jon Nguyen to make a stand-alone full-length with a

life and feel completely of its own. He let the video and
the skaters chart their own course organically, leaving
himself the exibility to ne-tune whatever vision came
out of that process along the way. With the beautifully
unique results having already premiered this past
January, Thiessen, Davis, and Dolan sit down to discuss
the making of TWS Substance. MACKENZIE EISENHOUR

S U B S TA N C E

Chris Thiessen

Is it fair to say this is the rst video where its

completely yours?
Yeah. For Perpetual Motion [13], I had worked with
Jon Holland, then for Outliers [14], Oliver [Barton]
was a bit of a silent partner. We were back and
forth on it the whole time. So this one is the rst
one where it would be 100 percent my thing.
What has your approach been?
For this one, Im not out to try and reinvent the
wheel or anything. I just wanted to make a true
skateboard video. My goal with this video, and
just in general with lming, I try to showcase
the dudes as naturally as possible. I dont try
to pressure them to be something that theyre
not, or go out and do tricks that theyre not
comfortable doing. My goal is to showcase them
and their skateboarding as it really is, in the time
period that we have to lm. I think thats how you
get the truest skate video.
When did the VX call get made?
I learned to lm skateboarding on the VX. Its my
favorite camera, and I had been missing using
it and wanted to use it again. We started doing
the Headcleaner video in late 2014, and that was
obviously an all-VX project. So after Outliers was
nished, I picked up the VX and didnt use any
other cameras throughout the time I was making
Headcleaner. Towards the end of Headcleaner I
knew it was time to start the TransWorld video,
and I was just like, Fuck it. This is what Im
comfortable using, this is what I want to use. It
sort of occurred to me that theres truly no reason
to not be doing what you want. Skateboarding is
supposed to be an individual outlet. So I just think
you shouldnt be basing what you do with your
skateboarding or your lming on what anyone
else is doing. You should just be doing what
youre stoked on doing.

Youre the artist, so you should get to use your

paintbrush of choice?
Right. I just dont have an interest in basing
what I do off of what the industry deems as
the standard or anything like that. I feel like I
would immediately be putting myself in a box if
I did that. If youre using what youre comfortable
using, thats how you get the best results.
I was talking about this with Davis Torgerson
too, but basically how Ty Evans had sort of
cemented the TransWorld format with highproduction values as the center of it. But this
one is denitely in a completely different
direction. Even Outliers still felt like it was a
little in that Ty model. Is that fair to say?
It is fair to say. I think just knowing the history and
classic TWS videos, you kind of strive for that at
rst maybe just to try and reach that. But after
having done that once or twice, now I just want to
do what I want to do.
So this one is your work of art? Your conceptual
piece?
Totally. I mean, its so epic to be able to make
these. And to have this golden opportunityyou
might as well do it the way you want to do it.
What were the trips like?
Thats another thing. Doing a video on this scale
in such a short amount of time is pretty insane to
begin with. So the trips are really important to the
video itself. That said, with injuries and some of
the dudes not even getting involved in the video
until a lot later than they normally would, we
didnt do our trips until later in the yeartowards
the end of the video. Which is basically backwards
from what you usually want. But we did Barcelona
for two weeks. Barcy is epic for obvious reasons.
But I was also excited to go lm VX in Barcelona
because it reminded me of Habitat Mosaic [03]
and French Fred [Mortagne] and the Sorry videos.
I still watch those all the time, so to be able to go
there and replicate that look was really exciting.
76 | TWS

You guys also went to China.

Our other big trip was the China trip. That one
came about through myself and Dave Chami
just talking about where to go. Dave suggested
a few of the more remote cities in China. He had
some friends that had visited Chongqing. Its
one of the most populated cities in the world
and also one of the most polluted. It was insane.
Before that we had spent one week in Kunming.
Kunming is this beautiful city up in the mountains,
so you get these pretty blue skies. It almost felt
like a European city. Everybody fell in love with
Kunming, then we got on the plane and ew to
Chongqing and it was just this raw, dirty, megapopulated sprawl. It was an adventure. But we
skated so much untouched stuff in both places.
The spots made it all worthwhile. Being the rst to
lm a trick on a spot is such an incredible feeling
and getting home and watching it.
Has the vibe been good with the crew?
This group has been awesome to skate with.
I know it sounds cheesy, but weve actually
all gotten really close through this project. Its
probably the closest Ive gotten to a group that
Ive worked with. Im sad to see it come to an end,
honestly.
All-time favorite TWS part?
Josh Kalis and Stevie Williams, The Sixth Sense
[98].
All-time best TWS video?
My default answer would be Modus Operandi
[00]. But actually the rst one I ever saw was
Greatest Hits [97]. Ill go with Greatest Hits
because it was my rst.

How has your experience been lming this? I heard

you were hurt for the rst six months.
Yeah. I didnt start skating until sometime in June. And
then I broke a rib at the end of July and couldnt skate for
all of August. So I really got started on this in September.
Damn. What was the rst injury again?
I broke my foot at the end of 2014. I had surgery on it, and
it just healed super slowly. I had surgery December 1,
2014, and the doctor was like, Oh, it can take anywhere
from seven weeks to three months to recover. Being a
skater, of course I was just like, Oh, Ill be skating in seven
weeks or sooner. Because were really tough, right?
[Laughs] But then I would keep talking to Thiessen like,
Yeah, all good. I just need one more checkup and Ill be
back next month. Every month I would basically end up
telling him one more month!
That must have been rough waiting to heal.
Oh, totally. I was like, I am so excited to do this project.
Being stuck at home while the clock was sort of running
was super frustrating. I was ofcially in the video last
December. I had had the surgery like two weeks earlier.
At the time I was telling Chris like, Ill be good in a
month! After a while I started feeling kind of bad, like I
might have blown it for him.
It might work to your advantage. Like youll be the
guy whos most charged at the end after waiting so
long. How has it been since you got to skate nally?
Its been good, but its tough too. Because mentally Im
really excited to skate. When youve been out for that
long thats all you want to do. But physically Im trying to
lm a video part while Im still getting my skating back to
where it was before the injury.
Did you know the other guys prior?
I knew Tristan [T-Funk] from DC trips and then I had met
Tom K a while back before. I hadnt met Jon or Dolan
before. Right when I got on board, I think Dolan was in
and Tom was in, but the other spots were still open. Chris
would keep updating me on who was potentially in it, so
that was a cool process to nd out who we would share
the video with.

Are you a fan of the VX?

Personally I denitely am. I used to have a VX back in
the day and lm a lot. From the Boondoggle days in
Minnesota, I was always the guy in the crew with the
camera. I remember when Chris was telling me that
TransWorld was down to do it all VX, I was stoked. Im
excited just for something different I guess.
Its funny to think of the Ty Evans TransWorld mold
and how it was always sort of considered the highest
production value possible. This will denitely be
different from that.
Totally. I think its sick. Thats one of the things that makes
this project so special for me. In a time where there are
no more videos, theres no feel to anything. Everything is
thrown together and diluted on the Internet. So to work
towards something that will actually be in one whole
video, with an actual premierethe whole VX thing
will make it blend and sync up that much more. Rather
than just 50 different lmers with no feel or style. Not
everyone is going to like it. Some people will love it, and
other people will hate on it and talk shit on it.
Everybody is gonna love it.
[Laughs] Yeah. They are.
People were saying you are sort of the tech dude
in the bunch. Tom K and Dolan are more big basics.
T-Funk is all over with fastplants and all that. Jon is
sort of the Isle-style ow guy on some cobblestone
or something. Youre like the Shane ONeill of the
bunch.
[Laughs] So weird. Yeah, its probably Jon and I doing
the most ip tricks and switch stuff. But its funny because
Ive never thought of myself as the tech guy. Thats so far
from what I am [laughs]. I like that skating is mixed up
right now though. You can go from Grizzly Grip to the
dude in the tucked-in Polo shirt.
All-time best TWS video part?
The rst one I saw was maybe In Bloom [02]. As a kid
I was psyched on Evan Hernandez. He was sick. But
honestly I think my favorite part might be Chad Tim Tim
in A Time To Shine [06]. I stopped doing what I thought I
should do and started doing what I wanted to do.

Its been really fun. Its a whole new experience for me.
I had never traveled this much. These were my rst
big overseas trips. China was insane. Just like a whole
different world.
You guys went to some out-of-the-way destinations
even for China.
Yeah. The rst city we went to, Kunming, was really
cool. You could still actually eat. Then the second city
[Chongqing] was pretty brutal. Just massive culture
shock and pollution.

How about the VX front? Are you down for that?

For sure. I fucking love VX. Thats skateboarding right
there. HD is cool, but its a whole different vibe for
skating. Thats like some football shit to me. VX is just our
thing. Its what we know. My uncle was a lmer out in the
I.E. [Inland Empire, California], so Ive been around the
VX for a long time. His name is Matty B. He made the
Janky video. He got my brother into skating, and then I
got into it from there. But I also just love lming. Its really
fun. I love that ritual, and we did it while lming thisafter
you get done skating, you go back to the hotel and get a
little rerun of what we got for the day.

Had you lmed with Thiessen prior?

I had lmed with him when Neen [Williams] had a part in
Outliers. I met up with him for the weekend up in LA and
just lmed some clips. That was the rst time I met him,
and then we stayed in contact. Then I got a call from him
one day out of the blue hitting me up for the next video.
I was just like, Im super down.

This video feels like it will be a radical departure from

the TWS formula. I know theyve claimed it before,
like Not Another TransWorld Video, but then it still
felt like the same format. This one seems like it will
actually be completely different.
Yeah. I think this will be one of the better ones out of all
the recent ones. I hope so at least [laughs].

How was that call? Must have been a gnarly one to get.
Yeah. I was up in the hills above the lake picking sage
to make sage bundles and stuff. I was looking over the
lake when he called me. I was just like, Life is awesome.

Thiessen told me about this China trip where you left

your board at LAX then realized you had no other
boards for the trip.
[Laughs] Yeah. I had eaten this little edible. We were in
the line to get through security and I started to feel it. We
were running late to get to the plane, but we still wanted
to stop at the bar and get a double. I think I left my board
at the TSA screening. I put my shoes on and just grabbed
my bag on the way to the bar. I didnt realize until I got
off the plane in China, some 13 hours later that I had no
boards at all. Tom hooked me up with some Thunders.
I went to a shop, traded them for Indys, bought two
boards and those lasted me the whole trip. Luckily I still
had wheels and bearings and stuff.

Biblical moment.
Pretty much.
I was told at present you have the second most
footage with like 12 minutes or something. Have you
been on a roll?
Oh, fuck. Thats sick. I didnt even know I had that much
[laughs]. I dont know. I just lm. I like to skate. I know
other people might be planning this all out or something,
but I just skate. If I see something I want to try, I do it.
Thiessen was saying that one of his objectives with
this was just to let it happen. Not pressure anyone or
push for anything.
Yeah. I love Chris lming too. Hes such a good dude to go
out with. Hes really motivating. He lets you do your thing.

TWS are proud to announce our reader
and staff picks for our favorite moments of
the past twelve months. As is the custom,
this intro/disclaimer is here to tell you that
skateboarding has no bests and that
nobody really wins it. As an old wise man
by the name of Jason Dill once said in his
Feedback (1999) intro, Its not a sport*
I look at skateboarding as more of an art
[form] than being an athlete. As such, we are
really just sharing our opinions. Sharing our
opinions on our fellow artists. And sharing
our opinions on their art.
That said there still are some metrics by
which all of this can be based off of. Certain
video parts, certain photos, and certain
people undeniably created a bigger burst of
stoke within our global tribe than did others.
As suchthose got the most votes. But that
still doesnt invalidate a video part that was
only seen by you and your two best friends.
If the homey video you guys made for your
local shop in Alaska got you the most juiced,
by all means thats your winner. On our side,
these Awards are simply what got us and our
readers the most hyped by the numbers.

these Awards arent meant to cement acrossthe-board winners and losers in the jock/
reality TV/Donald Trump sense, they do offer
us a rare chance to actually sit down and take
a look back over skateboardings collective
output for the past year. In this day of nonstop content being force fed into our brains
via social media, daily web clips, and the race
for second-by-second trending relevancy
what a welcome concept to actually stop
for a minute, sit back, and just take some
stock of it all.
So kick off your shoes, ll up your glass
or top off your mug, and, I dare youturn off
your phone. The following pages represent
our magazines and our readers favorite
works of art from 2015. While we might not
all get pretty round trophies at the end of the
nightmost of us still get to ride skateboards
every day and some of us even get paid to
do so. Sport or no sportin my book, thats
about as close to winning as you can get.

ERIC STRICKER
MEMORIAL AWARD

2015

S H E C K L E R F O U N DAT I O N
This years Eric Stricker Memorial award
was given to Ryan Sheckler and The
Sheckler Foundation for the relentless
effort, support, and thousands of dollars
they have given to those in need over
the past eight years. Their annual events
such as Skate For A Cause, the Ryan
Sheckler Celebrity Golf Tournament, and
their most recent online undertaking,
Be The Change, are just a few of the
initiatives they host in an effort to bring
attention and funds to charities that are
helping people with everything from
autism to physical disabilities and even
cancer. Founded in 2008, The Sheckler
Foundation was started as a way for
Ryan, his family, and business associates
to give back to the community beyond
skateboarding. Ryan could have easily
kept his lifes achievements and celebrity
for his own self-gain, but he chose to use
the advantages he had to help others

along the way, and we admire that.

Our mission is all about sharing love and
light to kids who could otherwise be in
dark times. We get to be a part of helping
people be the change they want to see
in this world, Sheckler says. Putting
a smile on a kids face who is ghting
cancer, helping a kid get the medical
care or equipment they need, helping
awesome people teach skateboarding
to kids who are challenged, thats why
we do what we do.
2016 will mark the eight-year
anniversary for The Sheckler Foundation,
and looking back at what theyve done
over those years is very humbling.
Respect to Ryan and everyone at The
Sheckler Foundation for all that they do
and all the lives they help. If you want to
learn more, visit shecklerfoundation.org.

ROOKIE OF THE YEAR

2015

M I L E S S I LVA S

As with all the Best Rookie awards of the

past, its not only an accomplishment
of making the biggest impact of all the
new pros, its also a milestone of a career
thats just beginning.
I believe Miles is a skateboarder who
comes around only once in a generation.
A testament of this is how he blends a
uid style and the ability to get super
gnar with such a diverse and well-curated
selection of tricks into one carefree and
fun-to-watch package. Having watched
Miles grow up from the little 13-yearold grom he was when I met him, Im
happy to say that hes the same guy hes
always beena super humble skate rat
who stays rooted in his local scene and
is eager to progress and shred whatever
lies in front of him. What we saw in 2015
is only a preview of what Miles is capable
of doing on his skateboard, and I know
that in the coming years and decades of

his professional career were going to

see a whole lot more. Walker Ryan
Miles went pro for Organika in May 2015.
He had the last part in LRGs 1947, nally
releasing his 2013 backside noseblunt
TWS cover. He showed up on two more
mag covers in 2015, had insanely fresh
IG clips, and popped up on our site in the
adidas Superstar ADV video, the adidas
Boost video, Ofcial In Koreas tour video,
and another Ofcial Pro video. He had a
couple of massive ip tricks in our Ofcial
In Korea article in our April issue and a
nice switch back lip in our December issue
1947 article. Then in early December,
Miles left Organika, so 2016 will reveal a
new board sponsor and an insane new
part in the adidas video Away Days. And
well be waiting like the Miles fans we all
are. For the rugbys, for the bucket hats, for
those indescribable rollawaysMiles Silvas

FEMALE

2015

LETICIA BUFONI

This is the rst time weve ever given

a female Readers Choice award, and
its no surprise, because 2015 was an
extremely progressive year for women in
skateboarding. Every single lady killed it
in 2015, theres no denying that, but there
was one who really outdid herself on all
levels. That lady is Leticia Bufoni. Whether
she was fearlessly leaping onto handrails
and jumping down stairs or stripping
down to skin-and-board for magazine
spreads, her condence on and off her
board turned heads and dropped jaws
in 2015. We got to see what a full part
from Leticia looked like in Dew Tours
Push Project while additionally getting a
real inside look at what her life was like
growing up in Brazil.
And besides dropping her rst-ever
full video part, Leticia had a few other
signicant rsts in 2015 as well. She

was the rst-ever Womens SLS Nike SB

Super Crown World Champion raking in
a cool $30,000 at the SLS Super Crown
in Chicago. She was announced as Nike
SBs rst ofcial female rider, which is
pretty heavy when you think about that.
And even though she may not be the rst
female in a Tony Hawks Pro Skater game,
its still a huge personal accomplishment
and a rst for herself to be an actual
character in THPS5. She killed it on the
streets, on the course, and even in a multidimensional video-game world. What the
hell didnt she do? 2016 will be an even
heavier year for the women involved in
skateboarding (and for skateboarding
as a whole), and were already on the
front lines, locked and loaded. But for
now, lets raise a toast to our rst-ever
female Readers Choice award winner,
Leticia Bufoni. BRIAN BLAKELY

ISHOD WAIR

Youd be a fool to say you didnt see enough Ishod Wair

in 2015. This dude was all over the place. Witnessing
him drop a hat full of video parts in all denitions while
still casually ranking himself 13th among the 27 Street
Leaguers, youd rightfully assume Ishod had a twin
brother doing some of the work for him. But thats not
the case. Theres only one Ishod.
Ishod was unstoppable this year: His participation in
the Push project gave us both a video part and a little
background on his childhood. His part in Sabotage 4
blew minds and left us wanting more. An insane iPhone
part came out of nowhere just for fun, A REAL Happy
Holiday plunged onto the interwebs right around
Christmas as an early stocking stuffer, he gave us
nearly 14 minutes of raw footage in Fourstars Obtuse
Moments, and that kickip crook he did for the Nike

SB Dunk Pro Low commercial in LA (narrated by none

other than JB Smoove) is easily worth a mention. What
else? His part in Phathouses Told Ya dropped late
December slowly bringing the year to a halt. And you
know what? Im still probably missing a few things. The
scary part is Id be willing to bet that there are hard
drives of footage and buried iPhone clips out there
in the abyss from 2015 that will potentially never see
the light of day. Maybe hes just doing the rest of you
guys a favor because that shit is overwhelming. Yeah,
actually, Im sure thats what it is. The question is, will he
outdo himself in 2016? Well, we all know Ishod clearly
doesnt know the meaning of stopping, so the answer
is yes. Congrats, Ishod. You deserved it!

VIDEO OF THE YEAR

2015

VANS PROPELLER

Skateboarding has been heavily into its own history this past
year. These things have always come and gone in waves. At
times it seems we are racing blindly into the future, and only
the newest and the freshest matters. While at other intervals,
we throw the baby out with the bathwater and take it all back
to the start. Lately however, the newest and freshest has
almost always been some novel reinterpretation of our past.
History itself is the fad. Enter Vans.
Vans Propellerthe rst-ever video from the rst shoe
company to sponsor skateboardersgives about the best mix
of this old-is-new mash-up in a single video as has ever been
produced. Not only because they have the legacy, team,
and widespread adoration to pull it off, but also because
they hired Greg Huntarguably one of the most signicant
skate video producers of the past two decadesto craft that
story, merging todays best-up-and-comers and yesterdays
biggest legends into a living breathing skate video.
From the second it opens with Tony Alva skating down
the sidewalk, virtually every era and facet of the pastime
is covered. Propeller switches gears seamlessly from 80s
backyard vert with Jeff Grosso, Hosoi, and Stevie Cab to
caveman nosegrinds on handrails with Andrew Allen. It
pivots effortlessly from classic Geoff Rowley ditch skating to
Rowan Zorilla pressure ips. And runs unabridged between
00s PD Dustin Dollin hubba crushing to Tent Cityera TNT tail
blocks on that one widow maker cement vert spine.

104 | TWS

Beyond the incredible job Greg Hunt did stitching it all

together, and beyond my editorial musings regarding the allso-tting historical scope, Propeller would still have taken my
vote for Best Video of 2016 if only for these ve things: AVEs
part, Gilbert Crocketts part, Daniel Lutherans part, Andrew
Allens shared part, and Ray Barbees bluntslide heelip in
Grifth Park. Congrats to Greg, Vans, and everybody who was
a part of this video. The rest is history. MACKENZIE EISENHOUR

VANS PROPELLER

AVEs part in Propeller is insane, we

all know that. But to put out that
part at 36 years oldwell, the word
insane just doesnt do it justice.
Theres a level of commitment and
life-dedication most people cant
wrap their heads around.
As he did at the 11th annual TWS
Awards in 2009 for Mind Field,
hes put out the Best Video Part.
From the over-the-top nosegrind
at Columbus Park in Mind Field
to ending his Propeller part
going over it switch to ve-0,
all the aggression is still there.
Tomahawking his board into
a wooden fence brings back
memories of his The DC Video
intro 12 years on. The Sherpa-lined
jacket, the Ozzy track. Over The
Mountain, but not over the hill.

As the water main breaks, all hell

breaks loose, and we see all those
gnarly Vans ads and covers come
to life. Longtime compadre and FA
co-pilot Jason Dill comes in with
a four-pack of beautifully curated
tricks. A guest trick from his other
brother in arms Guy Mariano and
this is the Best Video Part of 2015.
Dill will tell you, I watch skateboard
videos, modern ones, most of them
feel like drive-through video parts,
like eating fast food, McDonalds.
Anthonys skating and video parts
are like a rib-eye dinner at nice
restaurant with carpetthe kinda
place youd eat with your parents
but now enjoy it on your own cause
youre old enough to respect that
kind of top-level establishment.

LEGEND

2015

ED TEMPLETON

Ed Templeton is a legend. Although

calling Ed a legend is somewhat of an
understatement. This is a collection of facts
about Ed Templeton:
Ed Templeton has been called the Raw
Jock of modern skateboarding. A master
of the impossible. A surrealist for the
high-water age. Hes started companies.
Hes brought new tricks to the streets and
brought existing tricks to bigger obstacles.
Hes made paintings. Hes shot photos. Hes
been a World Champion. Hes recognized
as an internationally acclaimed artist.
In 2000, Ed Templeton broke his neck
while skating in Germany. Since then, he
has suffered at least ve concussions. If
Ed Templeton were to be summarized
in seven tricks or less, they would be:
the impossible, the noseblunt slide, the
heelip, the front feeble, the Casper ip,
the front bigspin, and the one-foot. Ed
Templeton is notorious for painting nudes
and taking nude photos.
Ed Templeton has had over 16 solo
video parts and over 68 pro model boards.
Eds awards and honors include the rst
published photo of a 50-50 on a handrail

(Circle-A ad, TWS June 1988), chair to the

Ed Haters Club of Big Brother magazine
fame, and being listed as number 20 on
TWS Most Inuential Skateboarders Of All
Time in 2012. Ed Templeton is a vegan, and
he drives a Prius. Eds wifes name is Deanna.
Once a day, Ed Templeton walks to
the Huntington Beach pier to shoot an
Instagram photo. Ed Templeton was born
and raised in Orange County, California.
His mother raised him alone, and he was
kind of a handful. In 1985, Ed Templeton
saw a stranger ollie up a curb and started
skateboarding. In 1987, he and some friends
followed Mark Gonzales home to his house
and watched him skate a quarterpipe.
The skateboarding scene in Huntington
Beach during the late 80s was split between
the freestylers near the pier and the vert pros
who would go to skateparks. Ed decided
to go skate the high school instead. Ed
Templeton and his friend Jason Lee would
adopt tricks they saw freestylers doing at
the pier and take them down stairs and onto
benches. Jason became known for his 360
ips, and Ed ran with the impossible.
After stints with Circle-A and Schmitt

Stix, Ed Templeton turned pro for Schmitt

Stixs 1990 reboot called The New Deal. Ed
decided to draw his very rst pro graphic,
and the rest is history. Ed Templetons
former cat, Ptah, appeared in Useless
Wooden Toys, 1281, and 411VM and
was also featured on Eds rst deck. Ptah
passed away on September 27, 2008.
Rest in Peace, Ptah. In 1992, Ed Templeton
decided to start his own company with
Mike Vallely called TV, then Television. After
the departure of Vallely, Ed launched Toy
Machine skateboards in 1993.
Toy Machine is a limitless vehicle for Eds
creativity. Toy Machine is also a corporate
bloodsucker. Past riders for Toy Machine
have included Ethan Fowler, Panama Dan,
Josh Kalis, Brian Anderson, Diego Bucchieri,
and Johnny Layton. In 1996, Ed Templeton
and Toy Machine released one of the most
inuential videos of all time titled Welcome
To Hell. Ed skated to Sonic Youths Titanium
Expos, and his part has been referenced
as the gold standard by anyone from Tom
Karangelov to Nestor Judkins.
Ed Templeton won a number of
world championships, including Munster,
Germany, 1991; Barcelona NSA, 1991;
Antwerp Nike Air Attack, 1993; and in
1995, Ed became the rst-ever World
Cup Skateboarding Street Champion. Ed
Templeton has a massive photo collection
of teenagers smoking. In 2000, his book of
photos, Teenage Smokers, won the Italian
Search For Art competition and $50,000.
He has since released another called
Teenage Kissers (October 2011).
Collectors of Ed Templetons artwork
include Demi Moore, John Waters, Neil
Patrick Harris, and Judd Apatowwho
wanted a family portrait painted by Ed. On
November 3, 2012, Ed shattered his tibia
and bula at an Emerica demo in East LA.
He hasnt felt 100 percent since, although
he just got back on his board in January
2016. Ed Templeton has inuenced an
entire generation with his style, innovation,
and creativity. These have been facts about
Ed Templeton. Ed Templeton is a legend.
Although calling Ed a legend is somewhat
of an understatement. Thank you, Ed
Templeton. This text is now over.
