Role: Director/Head of Big Data Platforms/Analytics

Location: London or New York


Sector: Financial Markets
Travel: Yes - % varies (major financial centres).
Background:
We have been considered a leading thought leader for the global financial services industry for defining and
implementing enterprise level Data, Data Warehouse, OLTP, Reference Data and Big Data architecture and
solutions. With a global presence and a core foundation of clients in financial markets (Investment Banks,
Insurance firms etc) we are seeking to capitalise on our portfolio to assure we maintain an edge in emerging
areas of Big Data (e.g. Hadoop, NoSQL, Data Science etc) and its application to Financial Markets.
Role:
Working alongside the Head of Data Management, your particular role is to help evolve cutting edge
applications of emerging Big Data tools such as Hadoop, NoSQL and/or Data Science Analytics at both a
strategic and practical level for both existing and new clients. The position will require an intuitive and
commercial grasp of how financial markets players can leverage the use of Big Data platforms and spot market
opportunities to deliver to major players in the field. The ability to take Silicon Valley-type ideas and translate
them to firms such as Investment Banks will be an example of key deliverables.
Responsibilities:
1.
Building the firms collateral and capability developing presentations, white papers, research, speaking
at conferences and raising the company profile, hiring both permanent and consultant associates, on-shore and
off-shore.

Supporting the Sales Team across our top-tier clients in Financial Services (Banks, Asset Managers,
Hedge Funds, Insurance companies most of the top tier are our clients). This includes writing proposals,
pitches, answering RFPs, and creating POC/Pilots where necessary to win business. Educating the internal sales
and wider teams on Big Data trends and technologies.

Ensuring our delivery of Big Data solutions is first class satisfying our demanding client-base, where we
win engagements to deliver Big Data solutions. This will include leading engagements, hiring, team-building
and overseeing deliveries.
Key Skills Required:
Proven leadership, including leadership within the Financial Services domain
Gravitas, comfort and capability of presenting and pitching to senior technology managers at major
financials.
Appreciation of the business domains in Financial Services that use Big Data, including Risk, Regulation,
Finance, Compliance, Fraud
Team building, hiring the best of the available talent pool, growing talent from within
Ability to pitch and manage multiple projects
Consulting background highly beneficial
Technical / Mandatory:
Demonstrable experience of architecting, building and delivering Big Data solutions (Hadoop, NoSQL etc)
Experience of bringing Big Data technologies out of POC/Pilot stage and into a Production implementation
Apache Hadoop Stack, including Hadoop 2.0 or competitor products
Implementation knowledge of one of the Hadoop commercial platforms, e.g.: Cloudera, Hortonworks,
MAPR
Experience of working in one or more Columnar technologies and architecting and/or delivering a large scale
solution
Awareness of the trends in the Big Data space and a keenness to keep up to date and educate both the internal
teams and our clients
Understanding the limitations of standard SQL platforms and the unique benefits of new Big Data solutions

Technical / Optional:
A background in Data Warehousing and more traditional tools such as Oracle, Teradata, DB2 is highly
beneficial
Experience with other NoSQL platforms: e.g.) Document Stores, e.g. Couchbase, MongoDB, Graph
platforms, e.g.Neo4J, or XML stores, e.g. MarkLogic
RDF, Semantic and Ontology tools and SPARQL query language
Knowledge of Analytic platforms, from open source to commercial offerings
Apache stack: e.g.) Pig, Hive, Spark, HBase, Cassandra, Kafka
A background in Data Modelling, Star Schema design, XML schema.
Platform optimization including hardware and software configuration.
Java programming background, although this role will not necessitate coding.
Metadata Management, and Data Governance within the Big Data / NoSQL domain.
Compensation:
Highly competitive to compete with the worlds top institutions, with Director-level base salary and bonus
component related to the size of sales and delivery and without upper limitations
