and approaches are terms which recur so often in the field of language teaching that they need to be defined in order to draw a distinction between them. 1/Approach: This refers to*Theories about the nature of language and language learning that served as the source of practices and principles in language teaching* (Richard and Rodgers ) (1986:16) An approach describes how people acquire their knowledge of the language and makes statements about the conditions
which will promote successful
language learning. 2/ Methods : A method is the practical realization of an approach. The originators of a method have arrived at the decisions about types of activities , roles of teachers and learners , the kinds of material which will be helpful and some models of syllabus organization. A method includes the lesson plan, the syllabus, the text book, other teaching materials and the number of teaching periods. It also includes decisions made about language teaching/learning outside the classrooms. All these
components must be in the total
harmony with basic principles of the selected approach. 4/ Procedure: A procedure is an ordered sequence of techniques , for example, a population dictation procedure starts when students are put in small groups. Each group then sends a second student u p to read the second line, the procedure continues until one group has written the hole poem . 4/ Techniques : A technique refers to all the activities udes by the teacher and performed by the learners in a
classroom. For example;
Audio_visual aids such as tape recordes , TV sets data-show which are used to achieve an immediate objective . A commun technique when using video material is called silent viewing . This is where the teacher plays the video with no sounds .Silent viewing is a single activity rather than a sequence, and as such is a technique rather than a whole procedure.
