Natural disasters brainstorm:

The class will be split into three groups and be given a
piece of butcher paper with a given natural disaster
(Floods, fires, hurricane/cyclones). Within the groups
students will brainstorm/list anything they know and
keywords in relation to natural disasters and then
groups will rotate. Each sheet will be put on the
classroom wall and throughout the ten weeks students
can add to them when they gain further content
knowledge.

Video comprehension:
As a class the students will be watching the video Fire
Safety in Your Home. They will be watching Scenario
One: Dial for Help, Three: Smoke Alarms, Six:
Candles, Lighters and Matches and Nine: Key
Messages, after each scenario students will be given
comprehension questions (evaluating whether they
understood the main points of the video)
Key Questions:
Who do we call for help?
Where should smoke alarms be
located in your house?
Where candles should not be placed

Real life events:

The lesson will begin with the class going through a
timeline of natural disaster events (what it is, where
its located and when it happened). Students will
further be given the chance to choose a natural
disaster and then research it individually on the iPads.
With the information they find they will need to
prepare a two-minute talk to present to the class.
Guided Research Questions:
What is your natural disaster?
When and where did it happen?
What caused the event?
Who did it effect?
How did the community respond?
Interesting facts

Rescue Service).Using this information, students will
be put into four groups each representing an
organisation. Around the classroom there will be
twenty scenarios where one or more response
organisations will be needed. The students need to
identify if their organisation is required in that
particular scenario.

The other group will have the

uniforms and play on the truck.
Reflection handout: Students will complete a reflection
handout based on the excursion (Resource 1).

floor plan of a house, they are required to label each
room and using the information from the excursion
and the video they will devise an appropriate plan to
escape a fire in this home. Students will have the
opportunity to present their escape plan to the class.
Needs and wants activity:
Within this lesson the class will be given three
different scenarios based on a type of natural
disasters (Floods, fires, hurricane/cyclones). Each
student needs to individually respond to all three with
a list of things they would bring/save if they had the
chance to do so. Once all students have completed
this they will need to cut their list down to three needs
they would bring with them if they had a short amount
of time to escape the disaster and explain their
reasonings. The lesson would conclude with the class
sitting in a circle to discuss their responses and
reasonings.

Design Your Own Home:

To begin this lesson the teacher will remind students
of the model of the safe and hazardous homes
against natural disasters from the excursion. There
will be a class discussion on the elements of the
house and around the house, what materials were
used to create it and what sustainable materials the
students will need to make their safe home. From this
students will design their own safe home however
they choose. This activity encourages creativity and
sustainability for the home and students will be given
the opportunity to decorate it the way they like. Each
student's home will be displayed within the
classroom.

need to act as one of the four emergency response
organisations (Firefighters, Fire Service, State
Emergency Services (SES) and Marine Rescue
Service). There will be props and materials that
students are allowed to use to help assist them in the
scene. After the three students have responded they
need to explain to the class what they thought the
situation was and who they were when responding,
the class will then let them know if they are right or
wrong. This will be repeated and three different
students will go outside.

General Overview Kahoot Quiz:

The students will be required to log onto an iPad and
participate in an online whole class Kahoot quiz,
which concentrates on all the information learnt
throughout the term. To conclude this lesson there will
be a class discussion on interesting content that
students found.
